The 12 Days of Christmas, Kiwi-style Can't Post

Not an earth-shattering story, but I thought some of you (who aren't in New Zealand!) might enjoy knowing how much LOTR has invaded Kiwi culture here.

Driving in my car the other day, I had the radio on. As part of an ad, the twelfth day of "The 12 Days of Christmas" started being sung, with a Kiwi twist to all the gifts, only I wasn't really paying attention. Until: "On the fifth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, five <Gollum voice> precious </Gollum voice> rings..." I just love that the ad writers must figure that Gollum's voice saying "precious" is so widely recognizable. Of course, I started giggling so hard at hearing Gollum in the song that the point of the ad completely went over my head, so maybe the ad writers should rethink their strategy.

LotR is still everywhere, isn't it? Even if it distracted you from the ad itself, it's great that they did that! Smile

I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

Too often we follow a path that is not really our own, one that others have set for us. We forget that whichever way we go, the price is the same: either way we will pass through both difficult and happy moments. But when we are living our dream, the difficulties we encounter make sense.

Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?

A man may do both. For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time. The green earth, say you? That is a mighty matter of legend, though you tread it under the light of day!

"Tolkien, like Lewis, believed that, through story, the real world would become a more magical place, full of meaning. We see its patterns and colors in a fresh way. The recovery of a true view of the world applies both to individual things, like hills and stones, and to the cosmic - the depths of space and time itself. For in sub-creation, in Tolkien's view, there is a "survey" of space and time. Reality is captured on a miniature scale. Through stories like The Lord of the Rings, a renewed view of things is given, illuminating the homely, the spiritial, the physical, and the moral dimensions of the world."

Tolkien and C.S. Lewis- The Gift of Friendship -Duriez

The 'precious' comes out of nowhere and she does it so well. :)

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

To be honest, [In reply to] Can't Post

I can't remember what the ad is promoting, so from that perspective it's a very bad ad! But it catches the ear because of that 'precious' line.

I heard it on Newstalk ZB, so tune your car radio to that station whenever you're driving somewhere and maybe you'll come across it. Smile
