Mount Doom V-- Open Discussion Can't Post

Welcome to the last discussion of the week: the Open Discussion!
Feel free to bring up anything I missed or didn't cover!
Not a whole lot of people participated in the discussions this week, but thanks to those of you who did (and to those of you who lurked), and good luck to a.s. with next week's discussion!
Have fun!

"Though you should find all barren and laid waste, there will be few gardens in Middle-earth that will bloom like your garden, if you sprinkle this earth there. Then you may remember Galadriel, and catch a glimpse far off of Lorien, that you have seen only in our winter. For our spring and summer are gone by, and they will never be seen on earth again save in memory."

The fate of Mordor [In reply to] Can't Post

One of the lessons of geology and ecology is that volcanoes make extremely rich, fertile soils. Already we know that there is water in Mordor coming off of the slopes of the Ephel Duath. What kind of paradise do you envision the Land of Shadow becoming, now that Sauron is ultimately defeated and Orodruin is free to return to its natural state?

that's a nice thought [In reply to] Can't Post

the folk previously enslaved by Sauron might be able to one day rebuild and live in a friendlier land...

...in a friendly land...with those cowardly elves who come back and repopulate Middle Earth now that the heavy lifting is done.

In 'The Steward and the King' [In reply to] Can't Post

Aragorn pardons the slaves of Mordor, and gives them the land by lake Nurnen for themselves. This seems to imply the Northren lands were not fertile (although they might become so in time).
The lands next to the great lake were cultivated extensively before.

Also, there seems to be no water flowing down to Gorgoroth from the Ephel Duath. Last week I asked whether this was a natural phenomenon, or another part of Sauron's malice, which might be healed once he's overthrown. What do you think?

Natural phenomenon or not [In reply to] Can't Post

I think the lack of water might be overcome in time.

I'm no geologist, but if, as Beren IV says, the eruption of the volcano will actually provide rich soil in Gorgoroth in future, then I would imagine that natural geological changes would also change the course of the water flows from the Ephel Duath. It's not likely that no water at all flows down eastwards - in fact we see that a few trickles do find their way down. It's just that the water is soon lost, evaporated or absorbed in the hostile, rocky ground. Once there is soil to retain the water, things might be quite different.

Farewell, friends! I hear the call.
The ship’s beside the stony wall.
Foam is white and waves are grey;
beyond the sunset leads my way.

Providence and Free Will [In reply to] Can't Post

All right, I won't start.

Cool

Although I do think what happens on the brink of the Fire is Tolkien intersecting Providence and Free Will, Fate, Doom, Luck, Chance, and all the Powers That Be. That's lots of intersecting lines!

It is hard when our chapter discussions overlap the holidays, and people are pulled in many directions. I can't speak for anyone else, but I have been literally absent for work-related requirements quite a bit these last two-three weeks. But thanks for your good wishes for next week's chapter discussion, which contains my favorite lines of the entire trilogy. Since you've already finished, I'm going to go ahead and start tonight, as I have more time in the evenings.

Some say that they're coming back in a garden: bunch of carrots and little sweet peas.
I think I'll just let the mystery be.

Sometimes the discussions pick up later. [In reply to] Can't Post

Your five threads eventually garnered ninety-two responses, and an average of eighteen replies per post is very respectable.

A question for later: why does Tolkien have a moment where Frodo is stunned by the passing glance of Sauron’s eye?

Thanks, Elenedhel!
