RingCon 2008 Can't Post

As a promised, a report.

My first Con, and I really, really liked it (already booked for next year, and than the full 3 days). I only went the Saturday, so unfortunately I missed Brad Dourif Frown.

I arrived early saturday morning, just in time to see the panel with Jed Brophy and Lory Dungley, they had a competition between two teams who was the best ord-stuntmen.
After that I met with Maitimosgirl, who was so nice to show me around. We looked around the stores, nice stuff and played a ancient Russian game.
Than Shane Rangi had a panel. What a nice man he is. He learned us a Te Waka, my legs are still sore from the clapping of the rhythm, but is was great to do such a thing together.
There was a showing of pictures taken in New Zealand on the filming locations. Fantastic to see those sites again.
After a little pause (such a Con is pretty exhausting) we visited the auction with Mark Ferguson, assisted by Lori Dungey, Jed Brophy and Shane Rangi), I even placed a bit, but was overruled by somebody with more money.
In the evening there was a costume contest, what a lot of work went in those costumes, they looked really great.
And than, the moment I had been waiting for. A panel with John Rhys Davies, just to hear him in real life was already great. And luckily somebody asked the big question, would he play in The Hobbit and/or Film 2. Well, he had spoken with both Peter and Guillermo about a role, and he really was thinking about it. But he wasn't to sure if he would want to play just one of 13 dwarves, since he was THE dwarf. But if Gimli was in Film 2, he would love to play the part again. You can imagine, I was really happy with that news!
After that panel there was a RingStars Tribute Show. It was nice, but it was already late, everything (including the used music) was in German, so we decided not to finish watching. I had to drive home for 2 hours, and Maitimosgirl had to do one more day of Con, so she could use a good night sleep.

What I liked best.... almost everything. I really enjoyed seeing all the beautiful costumes, elves, uruks, hobbits, gondorians. And also from the other movies, there was a fantastic looking Davie Jones, a very pretty Bellatrix LeStrange and much more. And everybody was so very nice, I didn't know anybody, but we all had so much fun together as if we knew each other for years.

So next year from 2 till 4 october I will be in Bonn at RingCon.

And of course, pictures. I hope this works, it is a slide show in Photobucket: link

Great news! [In reply to] Can't Post

Would love to see J R-D don the rubber face again! His disdain for facial prosthetics, which he made very plain on the DVDs, left me to assume he would not be returning to Middle Earth. The question raised in the article, however, is a good one, and worth considering: who would he play?

Option 1: GIMLI - he was amazing in the trilogy, and if Gloin's son makes an appearance in the bridge film, J R-D should get first crack. Period.

Option 2: GLOIN - what a kick to see J R-D play the father of his character from the trilogy. I bet the designers would have a ball finding the ways in which the two are similar, and in what ways they are different.

Option 3: If J R-D wants to play a dwarf of special significance in The Hobbit, that pretty much leaves Thorin. I don't think this would be a good idea. J R-D has such a distinctive vocal quality, that even when it is run through all sorts of mixing (as it was with the voicing of Treebeard), it still sounds very much like him (or Gimli, as was the case in The Two Towers). While I think we all agree he would be more than up to the task of playing Thorin, it might be a little distracting. Some new blood might be better here, IMHO.

I'm envious! Well done!

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"

Thank you [In reply to] Can't Post

for the report, Rosie! It sounds like you had an awesome time!

The return of JR-D to Middle-earth...! I wonder: if he wanted to play a part with less makeup demands, there's always Dain...or even, the Master of Lake-town for a non-Dwarf role...hmm...

that's front page news right there! [In reply to] Can't Post

I don't think we've had any reports thus far that JRD had actually spoken with PJ and GDT - so that is news worthy of the home page, methinks! Interesting stuff!

I'm glad you found the courage to go and I'm glad you enjoyed it so much! Hurrah! Thanks for the report - it sounds wonderful! We've converted you to con-going! Wink Who knows, maybe next year you'll even make it over to America for DragonCon?

I'm very happy that you enjoyed yourself. Smile

J-R D, what a guy! [In reply to] Can't Post

Well this is my first post..had to reply to Rosie-with-Ribbons post..

God, reading that was like taking a slap to face! I never realized that if ever J-R D comes back that he could play Gloin..he has to have some resemblance to Gimli right? There's always the part (spoiler alert) where i think we hear Gandalf's version of why he wanted to take care of Smaug before he allied himself with that traiterous Maia gone bad Sauron and that's why he thought of Thorin and his hate for the dragon and that Gimli couldnt go on Thorin's mission because he was too young lol 60 i think..ah well got excited over this post hah won't happen again!

Nice! But are we really wondering what dwarf? [In reply to] Can't Post

It would be nice to see a more severe Glóin played by JRD. It would be a nice contrast to realize it's Gimli's father, but that he has a different personality. That would bring a great depth to a character that is rather shallow in the book.

As for Gimli in F2, that sounds a bit forced, doesn't it? All in all, why can't he play both Glóin in The Hobbit and Gimli in Film 2?

Nice information!

Wat to go Rosie! [In reply to] Can't Post

How fantastic!
This is great breaking news!
I wonder which Dwarve and how many of them he'd play!
He seems to have changed his tune, or is coming around to the idea quite nicely!
It all sounds amazing!

Glad to hear you had such a good time, and thankyou for writing the report.

Cheers

Crows and Gibbets! What is The House Of Eorl but a thatched barn where brigands drink in the reek, and their brats roll around on the floor with their dogs! You are but a lesser son of greater Sires.

Woohoo! What fun! [In reply to] Can't Post

Aren't those people affiliated with the films the nicest, funniest people ever? I can't WAIT to see them back in a Tolkien story VERY SOON!!!

I'm so glad you made it to the convention. I strongly encourage everyone to get to at lease one if it's at all possible. You just can't describe the energy and fun that permeates every single hour!

sample

"Barney Snow was here." ~Hug like a hobbit!~ "In my heaven..."

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.
