Dragonslayer... [In reply to] Can't Post

is a classic! I think that dragon still comes across well considering the time it was made. Smaug could look very similar.

What's the matter, James? No glib remark? No pithy comeback?"

haven't seen Dragonslayer huh, well it is a bit of an 'oldie', but a goodie. maybe you'll give it a look see one day.

perhaps your right, but if the size of Moria is any indication of how big the dwarve city under 'the mountain' is, it
could support a good size dragon. look how tall the Balrog was. of course like the Balrog he may have to smash
his way through a bit.Wink

That 'little hole' that Bilbo used to enter Smaug's treasure chamber (which was, by description, quite a decent-sized passageway for Bilbo and the dwarves) had always bothered Smaug. He had thought he plugged up all the smaller halls and avenues, but he had not done a good job on the one in question. Due to his girth, there were just some places in Erebor that Smaug could not crawl through; therefore, I don't see him as very snake-like.

A Dragon to end all Dragons ... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi Blu Falcon - welcome to tORN!

By the way Guillermo described 'his' Dragon Smaug', I am expecting the unexpected.
Too many Dagons look like - well - Dragons Wink
Smaug I expect to be different. Not a clumsy filthy dragon who is a sloth-slob like Shelob - but cunning personified, and I think thats where most of the danger lies - in Smaugs personality ...
I like the idea that Smaug has a pale underbelly encrusted in jewels - that would look awesome ...
and I like the idea he is golden and red ... and that the environmnent he dwells is a reflection of who he is also ... if lying on a golden hoard of drarve treasure is something healthy for a Dragon to do, then Smaug is happy and healthy beast ... it is his wrath and fury that I look forward to seeing expressed ... the sound alone should be enough to make my pale skin turn blue Wink

Thanks for reigniting the thread Blu Falcon ..
Cheers
Elven x

Howdy and Welcome! [In reply to] Can't Post

There are 2 theses in my local library's collection on Tolkien's works... one on Jackson's films as they relate to Tolkien. Your direction sounds fascinating! You must keep us updated on your progress!

I'm glad you've found your way here. This is going to be a very exciting few years as the films unfold :D

not snakelike [In reply to] Can't Post

i quite agree Morthoron, i'm hoping that Smaug will not be snake like. somehow i can't invision Tolkien
thinking of him in that fashion either, seeing how this is supposed to be an English mythology and all the
dragons of European origen have that typical look that is familiar to most.

i have a book i picked up at B&N called 'Dragonology', it has some good pics. of different dragon types
derived from around the world. if your interested give it a look see next time your at a book store. i got
it mainly for inspiration for some sketches i wanted to do, but found it had some good background info.
on dragon lore, nothing to heavy, mainly geared towards the youngfolk, but interesting none the less for
us older, but young at heart ones too.

given the imaginations of PJ, GDT, & their teams of artists, we may see a dragon like none other ever seen
before!

what's your opinon about Smaug's voice? my son thought about Vin Desil, but i don't know, i have some others
in mind.

Well [In reply to] Can't Post

Unless I've mixed up my illustrators, Tolkien did invision Smaug as "snake-like." You can see his illustration here: http://www.hobbit.ca/Smaug-Tolkien2.jpg

Smaug pic. [In reply to] Can't Post

Smile that is a great picture isn't it. i do see your point. i guess i'm just wishing for
some girth in the mid section of this magnificent fellow. i wonder if they'll
actually show gems encrusted into his underbelly, so as to really make more
pronounce that missing scale that Bilbo sees. it's going to be a great
surprise i'm sure. i kinda hope they don't show him, or let us here his voice in
the trailers, i'd really love to hold on to the excitement, and anticipation until it's
time to see him in the movie. ...curiosity often gets the best of me though, Evil
guess that's why i'm here! Wink

thanks for sharing the pic., Arwen's daughter

I love that pic... [In reply to] Can't Post

but I also hope the dragon is a little more 'rounded' out. Just as long as it doesn't end up looking like that giant snake in Conan the Barbarian.

Maybe Smaug's color will change ... [In reply to] Can't Post

I think what Guillermo means is that he will have a basic color, such as red, but depending on the environment, it will have a distinct tint. Inside the Desolation, he will have a more golden tint from all the treasures, while outside, depending on the night or day, he will have darker or lighter tints.

As for the way he moves, in the desolation, he will be very concealed, and slither around, while outside he'll be spread out, free, and of course, magnificent. Wink

Dragon Personality [In reply to] Can't Post

And what of Tolkien's portrayal of dragons as characters? Guillermo has, quite fairly, described Smaug as a personification of greed, yet I feel that greed is but a subset of a larger evil. Tolkien's dragons, to me, represent every kind of worldly deceit.

Far more dangerous than claws or size or fiery breath is a dragon's voice. A Tolkienesque dragon can twist the facts into de facto lies, and thus a dragon destroyed Turin and everybody dear to him, even though Turin prevailed by force of arms. Greed is but one aspect of this deceit--to value objects for their abstract value rather than their intrinsic beauty, and to place that abstraction above people and above personal honor.

The more benign dragon in "Farmer Giles of Ham" also promoted worldly deceit, in helping Giles to attain royal stature without any sort of credentials beyond a series of lucky chances, thus illustrating the emptiness of great titles and pomp. But we don't care, because we like him.

I hope that Smaug portrays this negative kind of "glamor".
