Gandalf's comment on Del Toro as director... Can't Post

Sir Ian McKellen seems to be quite happy with the choice of director for The Hobbit...

From Empire Online:

Quote
Exclusive: McKellen IS Gandalf
Sir Ian confirms wizard's return

[..]Speaking at a special screening of The Dark Knight at London’s Imax cinema on Monday night, he said: "Well, I haven’t had the contract yet but it’s everyone’s intention that I play Gandalf so yes, I will be returning to the role. Although it’s not until 2010, I’m very much excited about returning.”

While the dotted line has yet to be formally signed upon, Sir Ian has spoken at length with Del Toro about the Lord Of The Rings prequels and he’s seemingly very happy at the idea of making the journey back to Middle Earth - albeit with a new director at the helm.

“Well, if you’re not going to have Peter Jackson, who else can handle the job? To get an international film-maker of his standing who adores the original trilogy, well I don’t think you could possibly find a better replacement,” he said. “I think the look will be very much as it was, Weta is still involved, it’s still the same workshops, the same designers, I’ll be there, Andy Serkis (now confirmed to return as Gollum) will be there and Peter Jackson will still be around - not that he’ll interfere too much - so it’ll seem like the old family is getting back together again.”

I wonder if this family reunion will turn out like most family reunions... everyone gets drunk, insult their host and try to make out with their fourth cousin, twice removed.Evil

I'm always glad to see how happy the actors are with GDT directing . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

because it's the fact that for people who aren't sure whether or not to trust this decision, atleast the original actors are happy (as well as Pete). So I think we should all be atleast happy for that.

Name me an actor ... [In reply to] Can't Post

that hasn't signed on the dotted line yet, thats ready to say on the record - "That Director! Can't stand him, no matter how good his films are - hope he doesn't mess this up!" ... Evil LOL!!

Ok - back to reality Cool

Its nice to hear Ian confident about his role, and his enthusiams for the The Hobbit and the way everything is playing out. Smile

How long is it usually before everyone signs that dotted line before the films made?
Confirming a role to reprise it - lots of things still dont sound absolutely in the bag and definate ... though I cant imagine Sir Ian re-negging, but funnier situations have turned up ... maybe everyone waits until the last minute before signing on - lots of negotiations and stuff to sort out no doubt ...
I remember Del Toro also saying something regarding further legalities that need sorting before he was ready to sign something else to do with the films - maybe that was about the second film - cant remember ...

Its still early ...

He's always the gentleman!

Cheers
Elven

I think... [In reply to] Can't Post

that Del Toro is still feeling the lay of the land, this is the most important and biggest project he has worked on so far (and if it comes out as well as LOTR does, it might be the biggest achivement he'll ever have)....and he has to make sure that he has the proper financial and creative environment he has always dreamed of.
Warner's is NOT New Line, even the new one, and he is being very cautious about getting as much power as possible and spelling out to the studio brass what his relationship with them will be. Forget NL, they're a shell. There's a huge incentive on the part of the studio to try to take advantage of him, as this franchise, (unlike even the Batman one) comes with not only possibly larger profits, but a degree of "respecabilty" /Oscar cachet as well. It's truly the Holy Grail. And even Universal screwed around with his work (who was behind the decison to replace the voice actor for Krauss at the last moment? Not that I don't like Seth McFarlane, but...)

I note with interest such little comments as how he is keeping a sketchbook for TH like all his other films, he's just not keeping it in a sketchbook....well, he doesn't say he's keeping anything, but implies it is there...says he's jotting it all on napkins and such (yeah, right, IMO:..and what I wouldn't give to see those "pages" at the moment....I'll bet he's got them covered in Spiders and microscopic writing already....if anyone wants an idea of this, get the "The Art of Hellboy 2" book, a few of the pages he showed on Jimmy Kimmel are reprinted at actual size....

I hope Del Toro is pulling a "Captain Vidal" with the Studios at the moment (i.e. "Don't ---- with me.") *That* sums up the "legalities", IMO, ladies and gents.... (I wish he could adopt Vidal's attitude and mannerisms when meeting with the likes of Jeff Bewkes, but alas, even when dealing through lawyers and agents it's all unfailingly polite and dipliomatic....no hammers, pliers, or pen-knives, alas.)

But regarding Ian's comments, knowing how close he was to Peter, it's great that he doesn't appear to find it's that big of a hindrance. Obviously, nobody's going to say anything negative (!) but you read between the lines. I'm really interested in Christopher Lee's reaction in this regard.

Seth McFarlane was impossed by Universal? Shocked oh my... lte's hope that doesn't happen in TH....
and... perhaps The studio also inferfiered in the screenplay?.... I felt Hellboy different from the usual storytellig from GDT....
