You are the reigning lord of your own country (with a landscape and major export product of your choice), but it is about to be attacked by a strong army from the neighbouring land. Which Middle-earth army would you prefer to have fighting on your side?

Not even close! The only way I'd have voted otherwise is if there'd been a "Balrogs" option.

Yes, Rangers and Rohirrim have smarts and know strategy pretty well, but I'm sure the elves have been in more battles and know what to do since they are immortal. Or Gandalf's "aim for their heads" advice on how to bring down the trolls. D'uh!

Lower centers of gravity. No, seriously, in my head at least axes (which I've been led by Certain Filmmakers to believe are the Dwarvish weapon of choice) are more damaging than swords, and they aren't called "doughty" for nothing. And - again, with no science to back me - the height differential might throw off enemy warriors accustomed to picking on people their own size. Assuming they're humans or Uruks.

And are there adequate facilities for bathing scenes? You know, for...after the battle? Seriously, this poll needs to be multiple choice!

Why wouldn't you bring a load of cave trolls? I assume I get the same number of them that you get Elves right? I am the only voter for cave trolls!

because of their inherent lack of intelligence - talk about having to micro-manage your battles! I'm stuck between Elves (and their Ages of experience and wicked cool Legolas moves) and Dwarves (with their low centre of gravity and never-give-up attitude).

Pun not intended. I say Elves are the best fighting machines because they're more rational and efficient. Dwarves, however, are fearless and good for hacking. Hobbits are great for sneak attacks... great as knee-cap busters and nut crackers. But Rangers & Gondorians.... mmmmmmmm... Men... muscly men... sweaty men... Captainy men...
*sigh* What? Oh sorry... drifted off there for a minute. I think someone's missing from that list, though... What would a war be without a Shieldmaiden or two?

are part of the package deal with the Rohirrim - whether the boys want them there or not. Hmmm, I suppose I could just put a proxy vote in for Hengist right now...

At least I do. And the boys, I think, are in the minority here, whether TORn wants it that way or not. I change my vote officially to a certain shieldmaiden.

They've got big hearts and good lungs, and they like long odds. But if Ents had been one of the choices, I would have gone with them. Hmmm, Ent vs Mumakil?

I want Elves, but I want the kind who ride up to Morgoth's front door and say, C'mon, let's have you then. Provided that my country is being invaded by anyone other than Morgoth, naturally.

Is the invading army attacking across an open plain? In that case, I'd pick any of the human armies (Rohirrim, Gondorians, Easterlings, Southrons) because their forces include cavalry. Elves would be a good choice here, too, especially if they're led by guys whose names start with "Fin". Is it passing through a forest? Counterattack with the woodcrafty Rangers and Ents. Does the army have to cross a mountain pass? Dwarves with their legendary toughness would be great. Humans and Elves would be good, too. Night attack? Orcs and trolls would have an advantage because they see well in the dark. Sieges? The engineering skills of the Dwarves would make your fortresses very difficult to crack; plus, they would be tenacious defenders. Ents would be good for attacking a fortress because they can tear apart stone walls. Naval attack? Get the Corsairs of Umbar on your side. Let them carry away as prizes any enemy ships they can board and take. Guerilla warfare against an occupying force? Rangers and Hobbits with their close familiarity with the land.

But I'll assume they too will come if I call their true King, the King of Gondor, Elessar, my beloved Aragorn, son of Arathorn; to my help all troops will come from all corners of Middle-earth, following him who can tell to all of them, 'Fight for me!...' So, to answer the poll as it is, I'll call the Gondorians, meaning Aragorn-Elessar!
