My girlfriend just asked me how Gandalf gets his staff back, when (at least in the film) Saruman takes it from him.

Have a look at the top of the staffs (staves?) and you'll see the tops are different. Back in the day, someone on TORN wondered if Gandalf had a locker of spare robes and staffs at Rivendell, as if it were a handy bus station. :)
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. he got that one, or made it, in Rivendell, and then got/made his later staff in Lothlorien. Perhaps with the help of one of the other Three rings. The last staff in particular looks very Elvish to me. Here are the three staves in order:
His second staff is very similar, but is more open at the top, conveniently for the crystal he uses in Moria:
Gandalf the White is much more conscious about accessories:

Okay.. not checking for myself but people keep asking how the Witch King shattered Gandalf's staff at Minas Tirith and then he has it at the Grey Havens. I realized that I actually haven't watched that scene more than once or twice since it came out. I can't verify it is shattered. But since people keep asking about it, I assume it is.

the staff itself isn't powerful, is it? Isn't it just something to focus the power that flows through him? Or does he let some of his power pass to it, as Sauron did the ring?

that since each staff seems to become more useful, he's using it as a conduit of his own powers and not relying on it to attain power. The first one held a pipe; the second one held a glow crystal; the third one could blind a Fell Beast with it's wicked beam! :D
