But the biggest news? It came from a question I thought would be a joke. “Who do I have to kill or sleep with to get a role as an extra?” user Mike Moore asked. “Oh my god, well that’s a good question only in that it’s asked often,” del Toro said, chuckling. “[But] I believe as the film comes to happen, in either of the two films, [fans] have a good chance of being there.” You can (and should) watch del Toro’s hilarious response to the question below. But in the meantime, consider this: Del Toro wasn’t kidding. And it won’t cost you a dime, Mr. Moore. “Sleep with a lot of people if you can! That’s a very good piece of advice. But don’t bribe anyone. It will be wasted money,” del Toro said, laughing. “We will set some rules and some contests and some fans will definitely get the chance of being extras. Go and apply for those roles!”

I think i'm too tall to be a Hobbit, but would happily walk around on my knees for the chance to play one.

...and not anything that would happen any time soon. But, it *might* be a good idea to keep checking the Home page and the boards if and when the time comes, for that and other exciting Hobbit-related things.

I would love a small part in one of the movies.... I'll just start saving days-off, so I can go to New Zealand.... That would really be awesome. I'll keep on checking the news here everyday!

I can put community college off for 6 months... XD I wonder what type of contests they will be. And when he says "it won't cost you a dime", I truly hope that means it covers airfare and housing! Nonethless, methinks I'll start saving up now. I'd like to be either an elf extra or one of the extras of Lake-town. I'm certainly tall enough to be either.

I've just read the FAQs and it says extras can only be NZ residents and you have to be in the country as and when the calls/adverts go out for extras. But if GDT is serious and has a way of allowing it then I'm there!!!..if I don't have to pay for my flight to NZ that is! 5'5 isn't tall enough to be an elf so I'll be a Hobbit I guess!

If it was just "in the country" I'd be good. I''m already planning my trip in 2009/2010- I'd be happy to wait for 2010 to be an extra. ---Tamara

Why does everyone want to be a hobbit!? We're hobbits all-year round! I wanna be a fly that lives in Smaug's den! Or else just a resident of Dale would be quite amazing! I'll bring the chainmail! Cet

Obviously, I'd take any such contest very seriously...and frankly I'm putting all y'all on notice that i'm gonna be a cutthroat, backstabbin' bastard if thats what it takes to win. Hate the game, people, not the player First a few questions: 1. will this contest involve feats of strength? 2. will there be drug testing?

He mentions 'extras' in his response, but I think people are delusional if you think this is going to turn out to be a chance to be transported to NZ for an extended stay and ongoing involvement in the production as an extra. It isn't very hard to think of clever ways of awarding some fans the 'ultimate geek prize' of a shout out in films. (think of the portraits that hung on the walls of bag-end ). Maybe a brief visit to the set as a tourist at best (not that that would not be awesome)

That's how casting most movie/TV shows go. For example, when I went to Catalina, they were filming a show. There were fliers around the island asking for resident extras. But you had to live there and get to the place they were filming yourself. However, GDT was talking about "a contest", which is *not* how extras are selected for films and movies. I imagine that if there was indeed a contest to be an extra in which "you wouldn't spend a dime", it would be something very special that only a few people would win. You likely wouldn't get paid the wage extras are paid (considering it's a contest and all...), but seeing as GDT made that statement, I would be surprised if you would have to pay for lodgings. *Maybe* for airfaire, though. We'll have to wait and see.

I'm okay! (ish) Oh yeah... I'm there, fersher! Lemmie see... if the plane fares aren't too outrageous, I plan to be in NZ November 09. Maybe they'd let me carry the shovel and bucket behind Smaug? That if and when that time comes, this place will degenerate into a scene of utter chaos, insanity and cheerful madness. (Not it isn't already, to some degree... ) Mr. Del Toro, I hope you realize what you will be doing to this website...:)

just Gramma being Gramma. I had to get used to it too. Really, though, I think Guillermo should be made aware of just what status, or should I say fame, she has around here. She has earned the cachet to be an extra. I hope (seriously) that G knows it one day....

I reflect Gramma's excitement, only it is inward for fear of getting too excited and bursting a blood vessel. It would be a dream come true. I would be shaking like a leaf on set and have to be accompanied by a nurse with an oxygen tank to prevent hyperventilation. Hhhm, perhaps not...I'm picturing GDT getting people in white coats to take me away...
