Update on Doug Adams' LOTR soundtrack book
|
Can't Post
|
|
Doug has just returned from meeting with the publisher of his upcoming book, The Music of the Lord of the Rings Movies. The status to date is (with everything still subject to change):
- The finished book length looks to be 200 pages or fewer.
- Multimedia content will likely be offered on one double sided DVD
- They're exploring the concept of a 'regular' and 'deluxe' version of the book
- Things are on schedule for a fourth quarter, 2008 release
He also published an updated sneak peek at his mockup of the entire book.
You can click HERE for a larger version of that image but it won't let you 'read' the book. Just get a sense of the different sections. Doug wrote:
What you're looking at is the complete book in its mock-up layout... which means it's my own visual assembly, and hasn't yet been pushed to the publisher's art department. Like the liners, the form is pretty essential to the function, so I lay everything out for clarity's sake, even though I know it'll shift down the line. I still have a good number of graphics to insert and, as I say, plenty to text tweaking to do. And of course, those who assemble the actual layout will have a much more artful take on things. and
Remember that everything you see (if you can see at all!) is a mock-up. For those trying to ascertain page counts, etc... *way* too early! I suspect the final layout will be tweaked considerably so nothing you see here should be taken as a final version.
In case you're wondering what that mock up looks like enlarged, here you go:
That's actually from a previous version Doug offered. Here's the updated version posted yesterday:

forward to the release of this book and will buy the deluxe edition (why bother offering both, just make it a deluxe edition). So many wonderful items and I am really looking forward to the double sided DVD.

I've been looking forward to this book ever since I saw the first bits of it in Chicago in October of 2004. It's so exciting that the time is getting closer! (And I'd go for a delux edition as well).
"That is one thing that Men call 'hope.' Amdir we call it, 'looking up.' But there is another which is founded deeper. Estel we call it, that is 'trust.' It is not defeated by the ways of the world, for it does not come from experience, but from our nature and First Being. If we are indeed the Eruhin, the Children of the One, then He will not suffer Himself to be deprived of His own, not by any enemy, not even by ourselves. This is the last foundation of estel, which we keep even when we contemplate the End. Of all His designs the issue must be for His children's joy." welcome to TORn You know, a long time ago I suggested that one area you might want to cover in your book was the fan reaction to the soundtrack. Why such devotion? Why does it matter so much to so many people? And what influence did the LOTR soundtrack - both musically and in terms of fan reaction - have on following soundtrack projects? I'm curious if you branched out into any of these territories.

for your writings on this wonderful music! I'm really looking forward to the book. BTW, I recently met someone who doesn't care much about the movies themselves, or Tolkien, but is a huge fan of Howard Shore's score. It's definitely got a life of its own.

Hi everyone, and thanks so much for the warm welcome. Hopefully I'll have more time to post once various ends of this production are put to bed, but I'll do my best to pop in from time to time in the interim. I am sometimes amazed at just how long it has taken to bring this book into reality, but there's never been a day where I was sorry for signing on! And I do have to laugh... just about the time this one is hitting shelves, it'll be time to gear up for The Hobbit... I guess there are worse problems to have! :) Magpie, some of the material you mention will be discussed, if perhaps a bit obliquely. It's always difficult to put a fine bead on a true phenomenon. I suspect there's some contributory common ground between the work itself and the kismet of a primed and receptive audience. Complicating matters, it's all tremendously subjective--does Shore's music satisfy the Tolkien nut the same as it satisfies the film score lover? I've been fortunate enough to meet people around the world who love this music dearly, and it seems they all love it for very personal and very different reasons. However, there's more objective ground to be covered if we discuss just what makes this such an incredibly unique project. How exactly did Shore treat this adaptation? How does this fit into the history of literary adaptations, mythological themes, dramatic/musical tendencies of the Twenty-first Century? Though the answers to these questions won't directly address the personal issue of "why" this music is beloved, I hope they will at least highlight many pathways. -Doug

I've been looking forward to this book since Doug hosted a pre-symphony get-together in Chicago, and then he teased us with some of the pages at the next ORC in Los Angeles.
Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver. `Are these magic cloaks?' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder. `I do not know what you mean by that,' answered the leader of the Elves. NARF since 1974. Balin Bows

"I suspect there's some contributory common ground between the work itself and the kismet of a primed and receptive audience. Complicating matters, it's all tremendously subjective--does Shore's music satisfy the Tolkien nut the same as it satisfies the film score lover?" Yes, there's definitely a primed and receptive audience of book-lovers who completely appreciate what Shore has done, but the score also is hugely satisfying to those with no prior experience of Tolkien -- or even the movies! I love that he compared his efforts to composing an opera (well, I'm a huge opera fan, as well) -- the way in which he used and developed his motives is incredibly sophisticated. I did a presentation on his score for FOTR for a (very serious) music club, playing audio clips of some of the main themes and then video clips showing how the themes were used in context. This group of totally non-movie-fan listeners, most of whom were totally unfamiliar with the books, was totally blown away.

my biggest problem is that the music has become so emotional for me to listen to, it's like watching the films. I can't listen to it at work any more as I'm brought to tears through so much of it. Not just because of how well it captures the magic of the films, but also because it's so incredibly beautiful and stirring in its own right. Without Shore's music, the films would have been diminished, imho. I'm thrilled to have something new and so strongly connected to these films coming to us now. So fate is taking care of us in having your book arrive precisely when it was meant to, but it's regrettable that the making of it has been such a long [albeit loving] journey for you. *bows deeply* Many heartfelt thanks for keeping the magic alive!

I'd suspect that Shore's score for LOTR is among the most popular and widely loved/admired/respected film scores among the general public (and some few of the crtics) of the past half-century. Or if not exactly now, than it is on its way to becoming so. I'd rank it right up there in terms of popularity with "Dr.Zhivago", "Mary Poppins", "Star Wars", etc. IMO, it has not yet approached the universal popularity and/or cultural influence of "Oklahoma!" or "The Sound Of Music" but that's only because of the film's genre. The Symphony will go a long way towards cementing its place in score history and one day, the LOTR score WILL reach those hallowed highs. I am most eagerly looking forward to your book! IMO it's the best present other than a ticket to The Symphony itself...which I one day hope to see. Best of luck and yes, in light of future events, I am, as you say, "adjusting my dreams accordingly"!
