Is Ian sick? [In reply to] Can't Post

Quote
Q: You've repeatedly mentioned your desire to include Ian Holm, but given a lot of circumstances, it seems unlikely to me that he would return for all the action. Would you use him as a narrator, or in a framing device? Something like him reading "There and Back Again" to young hobbits? — MTV News

What circumstances is the interviewer talking about specifically? Is Ian Holme sick or something?

I really wish he could play Bilbo. I know he's old, but he's not much older then Mkellen. Bilbo is supposed to look the same age from the hobbit to the fellowship. They just want a young actor as the lead.

The cancer is in remission. [In reply to] Can't Post

At least so far. (It's been about 5-6 years.) Even then, fighting the disease does take a lot out of a person.

And there are other health problems which remain "personal". (As they should be.)

Plus he's 76 years old. (77 this September.)

It's unrealistic to demand that Holm play Bilbo, except possibly in a framing sequence (say, telling the tale to little hobbits.)

Ian McKellen is 8 years younger, and is in much better health.

******************************************
The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.”

This is his film! [In reply to] Can't Post

Some of the same news we've had, and some interesting insights. I like the fact that GDT again reassures that he would like to keep Sir Ian Holm involved as much as possible. I liked PJ's advice to lose weight since I too am someone doing that at the current time, and the older one gets the harder it is with all the demands etc. You have to take time to take care of your body and it is really important in the long run. I simply loved GDT's thoughts to the question on Tolkien being a man of deep faith and exploring spiritual themes. Though not really knew, I think his answer really provides insight into the crutch of his approach to the story, that the "morality, this spirituality will play a large part in the movie" really confirms to me why I so strongly believe that he is the one to do this film. He really does get what the characteristics of the dwarves mean in terms of their morality, that the elves have a different morality and Smaug yet another. Bilbo does represent the common English man, in some ways not just the common English man but the common man. I think that is one of the appeals of the story. It really makes me not want to wait to see how GDT handles Thorin's death scene with Bilbo. I think in terms of Film 2 right now, we just have to be patient and wait for the scripting to get done to see where it goes, but very interesting point on the title here, it will tell us what the story is and that will be an exciting day in the future. Good to see that Tolkien's art will have some influence but not a be a dogma he is hinged too. I think this shows to me that he has a very clear image forming of what Middle Earth is to him. That is what is exciting to me. As he said earlier in another thread, once we see that we can debate it and he realizes that others may not agree with everything, and we can discuss that, but it is very clear to me that he has a vision and is moving with that vision. Sounds like someone else who once dabbled in a place called Middle Earth to me and I am very glad to see that it is his vision, incorporating many themes from the movies and other sources, but in the end, it is his vision. I'm excited about that and at this point that is a good starting point for this fan. Has anyone else picked up in all that he has said how much this is his film, with him honoring the themes and characters of the past, but moving forward? Good message to have moving into the conceptual phase I think.

" . . . (we are ) too engrossed in thinking of everything as a preparation or training or making one fit -- for what? At any minute it is what we are and are doing, not what we plan to be and do that counts."

J.R.R. Tolkien in his 6 October 1940 letter to his son Michael Tolkien.

Lotza News :D [In reply to] Can't Post

Thanks heaps for the heads-up on this one diedye - I was waiting for it to come about Smile

So Guillermo had a wicked grin on his face as he talked about Ron Pearlman and the role of Beorn ... Frown ... I still have hope for Russell LOL!! Wink

ArathornJax - you're questionwas in there!! Yay!! Nice one! Cool

and Ian Holm ... I love him! - but rumours aside, and health, Ian Holm took some 20 years off from acting at one stage - it might be Ian calling the shots for the role of Bilbo, and if that be so, all respect to him, but his capacity in the movie can be many fold - so I do look forward to his contribution in the Hobbit or F2 - no matter how large or small that role may be. Heart

Cheers for the news - its all, or nothing at the moment! LOL!

Elven

cool. He answered one of mine [In reply to] Can't Post

He gave a sort of "non-answer" answer about my question about whether the 'look' of the dwarves will be different than that established by Gimli in Jackson's LOTR. But found some of the info in his response (about the Thorin and all the dwarves being real characters and not just wallpaper) very reassuring.

*nods vehemently* re: weight loss and age [In reply to] Can't Post

You've got that right! Efforts I make now that would have lost me 10 lbs in 1 month doesn't even tough the poundage now. It's maddening!!! The metabolism is my biggest enemy right now.

As far as the energy of Ian Holm... all you have to do is listen to his recent work in Ratatouille and you know without a doubt he'd be gang busters in any contribution to The Hobbit he'd make! He's just GOT to be in The Hobbit... and that's flat! ;)

I found myself close to tears as I read much of this.

I believe the second movie will be present as an opportunity of enthusiasm and creation. I frankly look forward to that one so much. I really want us to prove that we have a solid concept for that, but the promise of that land is absolutely mind-boggling! I can't wait to mount on the horse and ride, and I hate horses!

I can't see anything that he says here and in previous interviews that makes me nervous about his knowledge, devotion and enthusiasm for these 2 films. Even the threat of no second film, based on his unwavering loyalty to the integrity of the story, doesn't worry me. I want it to happen, and I totally believe in Boyens, Walsh, Jackson, and GdT writing a brilliant account of what happened between the two stories. I can't believe how lucky I am to be sitting here and a part of the birth of these films and these artists sculpting such beautiful adaptations of Tolkien's works. I'm living in a dream.

Trust. It's ALL going to be GREAT!

LOTS of news.... [In reply to] Can't Post

Am trying to keep up with it all...*wheeze pant pant*Laugh Well, the cup is either dry or runneth way over, I guess!

I agree everybody! I still regard it as something of a miracle that circumstances worked out that we got the right director for this, IMO the ONLY one who could have done it. There are a lot of other great directors out there but none of them appear to be as deep-rooted, as intellectual as he is.
Jackson was a scholar of genre and classic film; and his well of genius was taken from there, ideas taken from the filter of of cinema. Del Toro is by contrast more steeped in classical myth and literature, and takes his ideas directly from the literary paethon, though the depth of his knowledge of comics, games, horror and "genre" cinema is extrordinary. One appears to work closer to the source; the other through a window. But it amkes no difference. Peter needed to, and was not afraid to, draw upon the talents of Fran and Philippa in fleshing out his realms of fantastica with emotional minutae; whereas Del Toro appears to really be the very best of Peter and the very best of Fran all rolled into one. (In the Hollywood Elsewhere interview, when discussing Hellboy, when he questioned why anyone who believes in love and dares to proclaim that fact on film is called a sap, wheras anyone who is cynical is called a genius; and he preferred to be the sap, I was close to tears. (This is amply shown by the beautiful and intensely moving scene that closes the Hellboy film; and it wasn't just a "after 2 hrs of monster-killing and geeky goodness, let's throw a little something in for the ladies"--no, in the HB Commentary he says that he feels the same way about his wife that HB does about Liz, I reached for the Kleenex. And I will NOT give this away And if you think that was great, wait until HB2 hits...you will be rocked 6 ways to Sunday.)

Yes, we got the right person, and timing was everything. Without PL we would never have gotten him...and the lawsuit thing would have ended up the way it did....

As to the dwarves....casting them is going to be a MOST interesting process. The trick, or course, is goingto keep this from turning into a live-action Snow White (I'm sure PJ's dwarves/armor thing was a conscious decision to do rhis so they wouldn't be cute. It's a tare thing in film after all. It will be harder to do with them wearing "civvies" so to speak.

Kind of rambling here but my computer time is limited....

All praise to Diedye, our news gatherer. Us amateurs can't keep up! Sly The way things are going, we should gather all these new interviwes. footage etc and put them in one thread. I've got Hellboy and the GDT Hollywood Elsewhere interview in my Hellboy thread (no HB spoilers in that thread or interview yet, BTW) , It would be great to have a "Del Toro in the Media" or something thread so people don't get confused--or are in a hurry and don't have time to skip all over the Boards like usual.... (not that we don't want to, just in terms of gathering news I mean!)

Not only is Sir Ian M younger [In reply to] Can't Post

his character in The Hobbit is supposed to be an elderly man. On the other hand, Bilbo is supposed to be in the prime of his life, and it's unrealistic to expect Sir Ian Holm to play that part well. I prefer the best Bilbo for the story over loyalty to an actor.

Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver.
`Are these magic cloaks?' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder.
`I do not know what you mean by that,' answered the leader of the Elves.
