The following letter is linked to from TORn's main page. Anybody tempted to take the course other than me? I am an English professor who has been a huge Tolkien fan since 1967, who loves the films, and who has been a daily visitor to theonering.net since 2002. Almost two years ago you allowed me to announce on The One Ring that I would be teaching a course on Tolkien for the first time at my college, Honolulu Community College in Honolulu, Hawaii. I have since offered the course three times at my campus, and this Fall 2008 I will be teaching it again. This time, due to the interest expressed by theonering.net readers, there will be an option for students who are not in Honolulu to be able to take the course. Students can earn 3 credits of transfer-level college credit, and writing intensive credit, for taking English 257L J. R. R. Tolkien. The course will focus on The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, with parts of The Silmarillion brought in to provide background for a fuller understanding of The Lord of the Rings. We will look at Tolkien's themes, characters, images, and symbols and see how his childhood, his interests in languages and Anglo-Saxon England, his wartime experiences, and significant cultural and historical events of the twentieth century contributed to creating his masterpiece. We will also study the recent films by Peter Jackson and analyze how well they interpret Tolkien's books. As well as discussing the storyline, characters, and themes of the films, we will also pay attention to the music, costumes, art, and settings Jackson uses. If anyone would like further information on the course or registration at HCC, they may email me at leilani@hcc.hawaii.edu. I will be delighted to answer any questions and provide assistance in registering for the course. Thank you. LeiLani Hinds Associate Professor of English Honolulu Community Colleg

LeiLani Hinds is an excellant teacher. I met her 10 years ago taking an English 100 class from her. It was through her that I renewed my interest in Tolkien in the late nineties. Later we became friends and started haging out, going to the movies. We became much better friends after the LotR films came out and we both joined the local Tolkien Society, Tol Andúnë in 2003 when RotK was released. I have sat in on her Tolkien course, since she invites Tol Andúnë members to join in. I can recommend this course and any course from LeiLani Hinds. I wonder if this discussion thread would have been better on Main. Many in the RR are experts already. Just a thought. Anything to help get more people to her class. DoN

Hi, there! I believe we're fellow members of Tol Andune? I got the chance to take LeiLani's class on Tolkien's works in the fall of 2006, the first year that it was offered (which also happened to be my first year in college)! I posted a bit about it in my "introduction" in the welcome thread, but yes... 'Twas a great experience. LeiLani is an excellent professor with deep respect for J.R.R. Tolkien's books, and I consider it a great privilege to have been her student. Too bad I can't get credit for taking the class again, though.

i know all the regular members of Tol Andúnë quite well. There are also many who have registered who don't come to events and meetings... just get emails fro our "fearless leader". I looked at your user profile, I see that you live even further on the other side of the Pacific Ocean than I do. Which accounts for why I'm not sure know you. Aloha to you so far away. ...ammendment: I just read your 'Welcome' post on Off Topic. I know just who you are. Your dad teaches at HCC along with LeiLani. I kow your from that class and Tol Andúnë events. I had no idea that your went away to Japan for school. Awesome! You msut have started in January, after Halloween at least (I think that was the last time I saw you)... or were you at that HP photo shoot in January? Anyway... I think we need to move teh conversation to PM's (Private message) if we get any deeper. PM me anytime anyway. Good luck in your school endeavors... and adventures.
