John Howe: Forging Dragons

Kristin Thompson, from The Frodo Franchise reports that John Howe is releasing a new book, titled Forging Dragons. It contains John’s paintings of dragons, as well as the sketches he made in preparing them and some information on how he did them. There’s even discuss of the mythological background of each dragon. Quite fitting, if you ask me, now that he is going to be starting work on what has been described by Guillermo del Toro as THE Dragon.

I anticipate a lot of dragon merchandizing in the foreseeable future. Books, toys, drinking cups. I bet even now a studio is trying to put together a fast and cheap dragon movie to beat The Hobbit to the theaters. Oh, wait. Beowulf is already come and gone. Anyway, by 2011 The Hobbit could conceivably flop because of an overexposure of dragons. Rather ironic, really.
****************************************** The audacious proposal stirred his heart. And the stirring became a song, and it mingled with the songs of Gil-galad and Celebrian, and with those of Feanor and Fingon. The song-weaving created a larger song, and then another, until suddenly it was as if a long forgotten memory woke and for one breathtaking moment the Music of the Ainur revealed itself in all glory. He opened his lips to sing and share this song. Then he realized that the others would not understand. Not even Mithrandir given his current state of mind. So he smiled and simply said "A diversion.”

movie will suffer from overexposure of Hobbits and Dwarves, not to mention Elves, orcs and wargs. So I'd not worry overmuch.
I do not suffer from LotR obsession - I enjoy every minute of it.

What about "Willow II: The Eborsisk of Lonesome Hill"? Or "Ewok Adventure III: The Road Never Ends"? Or a crossover film "The Battle of the Half Pint Armies: Nelwyns Versus Ewoks"? Would Warwick Davis reprise both Willow and Wicket in a dual role? Then again, he is busy with the Harry Potter and Narnia series.

as a guide to his image of dragons. I know we already have a taste of it... but a more in-depth study by him would be fascinating in and of itself. I'm also looking through a fun book I have on dragons called A Practical Guide To Dragons by Sindri Suncatcher (yeppers... that's the name!). It's a tongue-in-cheek yet detailed sketchbook on the anatomy, personalities, and habits of different types of dragons. I'm having a ball looking through this! So if John Howe's has anything remotely like this approach in his book, that would really make it a treasure! Thanks for the heads-up :D

That divides the dragons in races from accross the world? Wyvern, Chinese Lung, European Dragon, European Gargoyle, etc? Because if you are, I love that book! If you don't you should check it out, mine is called Dragonology: The Complete Book of Dragons. I am a fan, you know?

This one has types of dragons: Red, white, gold green, blue brass, bronze, silver, etc. It's only about 160 pgs, but it's great fun. I'm going to have to check out the one you've mentioned. I think I've heard of it before from my g'son.
