I do think Jack would make a good Bombur, not because of his weight, but because of his comic timing.

This was his spoof on MTV with Sarah Michelle Gellar, after FOTR... I don't want any headlines saying these kind of things... So no Jack Black in The Hobbit and F2. I don't want to see him near anything LOTR because I'll be reminded of this. Some parts of the spoof were rather funny, but you don't want to think about this when you watch the real thing...

So you finally found what you were looking for! Well, one rumour invalidated - and probably thousand more to come! It will be fun to watch the media over the next few years. I am *so* glad that I am around this time to enjoy the fun!

Nothing against Jack Black, but I doubt that he could have played Bilbo. The same thing goes for Daniel Radcliffe. Can't wait until we find out who's really playing him!
"WHAT COULD HAVE BEEN" Did you ever wish certain moments from LOTR could've made it to the screen? Have you ever imagined what would have happened if all of the original writings from the script actually made it to the films? Well, "What Could Have Been" is the right discussion for you! Starting this summer will be a series of topics about what could have been in "The Lord of the Rings Trilogy". Be on the lookout, and be sure to join in on the fun!

I'm sure he's a great guy and a great actor, but just no. Not in a million years could I consider him a credible Bilbo.

Did anyone here seriously think he was in contention anyway? Don't get me wrong; I love Jack Black. He's just totally wrong for the role of Bilbo, and he knows it as well as everybody else does. Either McAvoy or Freeman would be perfect, though, so I'd be quite happy if either of those rumors pan out. BTW, did anyone else laugh at the idea at the idea of Jack Black concerned about looking like "a real fool"? I mean, isn't that his stock in trade? Or maybe he's normally a fake fool.

I hate Jack Black. Stupid comics do not have roles in large, big budget, serious movies. Mr. Tumnus all the way (James McAvoy)!

I find Jack Black tremendously unfunny, and his attempt at semi-serious acting in Jackson's King Kong flop cemented my opinion of him. I am not altogether sure of James McAvoy as Bilbo either. I'll have to give it more thought (or not, as time is fleeting and they'll choose whomever they wish despite my fervent opinion).

I found Jack Black by far the weakest bit of casting in Kong, he seemed to throw the balance off in every scene he was in, almost like he was acting in another movie from the other actors. However, he can br good - he was wonderful in High Fidelity. James McAvoy is very talented - I think he's the real deal. But he photographs much younger than his age. If they want a young looking Bilbo - and I suspect the filmmakers may want a younger looking Bilbo than I do - he could be quite good. He has an appealing screen persona that can hold one's interest over an entire movie, something that will be key for the Hobbit. But personally, when I picture Bilbo in my mind it's someone who looks about 10 years older on camera the JM.

Surely nobody believed them? They were quite clearly nonsense. I do like Jack Black, but he's definitely not right for the Hobbit. Or for serious movies in general. But he's great with some of his comedies. And Tenacious D.

The fact that he actually had to deny the rumor- like you said, I don't really have anything against him, but whether or not he could play Bilbo, I could not have been able to help sitting in the theater watching The Hobbit and thinking No, Jack, don't pick it up- that Ring is evil! or whatever, if that makes sense- he might have the skills to play him, but I don't think that he could really change his character enough to be him. As for Daniel Radcliffe....I'm not even going to dignify that rumor with an argument. (heh....Harry Potter Bilbo!!)

When it comes to casting possibilities...

If I might make a suggestion that some folks may have already done... The best thing to do is to look to Ian Holm in his youth. After that, you locate the actor with the most talent that resembles a "Young Ian" the closest. My reference is Ian's 1962 photo from his portrayal of Puck in "Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream" - Ian is pictured in the lower right-hand corner.
Mr. del Toro did such a perfect job of casting actor Kevin Trainer to represent actor John Hurt in his youth for "Hellboy". I have every confidence that del Toro will accomplish the same measure of perfection here.

If they went with Jack Black I would be SOOOOOO upset. I mean he can be funny (sometimes) but not in this movie. There needs to be the right kinda acting going on for this part.
