One advantage is ... [In reply to] Can't Post

I can swim over there - well sort of - the Aussie dollar still looks good at the moment with NZ's.

Another advantage about NZ and their dollar ... is their ammenities ...
Thank goodness in the time between films PJ Weta and the NZ movie industry has been busy building their industry as one as the finest and world class - they have not been idle during this time - everything is there and waiting - and still getting better ...
By the time 2015 rolls around NZ should have the worlds best in their lap.

Lets hope the dollar lets them do that.

Cheers Elven x

Were off to Hobbiton finally!

Well. . . not quite [In reply to] Can't Post

New Line didn't throw money at PJ, he had a pretty low budget cast, did everything cheaper in NZ so more bang for the buck, then made a LOT of money with FOTR and was allowed extra budget money after proving that the franchise and his team were going to be practically printing money. There were extensive re-shoots after FOTR.

MGM and Warner are committing significant monies to make this a viable franchise. And, NZ is still pretty damn far from L.A. which works in the fans' favor.

Well... [In reply to] Can't Post

Hello,

Well I'm a total optimist. They'll get their $150 million dollars, for each movie. Most of the "Harry Potter" movies cost $150 million dollars. I want their budget to "match" big budget movies of today, like "Harry Potter" and "Narnia". I want their budget "up to par" with today's big movies.

Regards,
Kristy.

I have a Pleo (a robotic, sauropod dinosaur).

But . . . [In reply to] Can't Post

What if the story doesn't call for a $150 million budget? Is the budget a badge of honor? What if it just costs less to make a movie in NZ and costs less to depict Beorn than it costs to depict four giant dragons?

I am NOT trying to pick a fight, I just don't quite get why you want that big budget.

I think the studios will pay whatever they "need" to pay.

Kiwis, patriotism, and fans [In reply to] Can't Post

I think that GDT and PJ should keep something in mind... Kiwis and Fans are willing to pitch in and help out for the sake of having something to be proud of that they can feel is their own. In order to explain this I'm going to need to waver off topic slightly before reining this back in...

Everytime little NZ has an international sporting victory, whether it was the late Sir Peter Blake, The All Blacks, the America's Cup, or LOTR, it made NZ ridiculously proud. Kiwis are exceedingly harsh on their heros, like the All Blacks. They had their worst performance at a World Cup last year, managing to make it only as far as the Quarter Finals, where previously the All Blacks had always made it to the Semi finals. The scrutiny and amount of scathing criticism about who should be burned at the stake for this "failure" to live up the All Black's image (in the minds of most Kiwis as the flag bearers of the nation) was totally unfair on the players.

Imagine the pressure that the All Blacks face compared to most sporting teams national or otherwise. To Kiwis, the All Blacks are national heros, probably unmatched in most Western countries (for example the USA is divided between three major sports, and none are particularly international). So the All Blacks have this expectation upon them from the entire country that they MUST win. This is due to the ridiculously impressive record that the pre-media NZ Rugby garnered internationally. The All Blacks have a 75% win ratio internationally. By far the best of any Rugby nation. So the pressure in the modern media New Zealand world is intense. When we lost the America's Cup after successfully winning it and defending it, people wanted to crucify the "traitor skipper Russel Couts" for joining the winning Swiss team. Kiwis are extremely hardcore about what little patriotic pride they can win. So LOTR coming to town in 1999 was a huge deal, the like of which had not been seen in the NZ entertainment industry before.

I think Kiwis will continue to pitch in and "give it a go". But I think this time around PJ and GDT have something else they can draw upon that was not fully established as strongly as it is now. Fans. Yes, us. I have absolutely no doubt that many tORN users would, at the drop of a hat, accept an invitation to assist on the films in whatever crew or extra capacity GDT or PJ required of them, simply to be involved in making something close to their hearts. So if they ever do get tight in their budget, I hope that fans will not be overlooked as an option to help pitch in and contribute and do things a little differently than Hollywood would typically demand.
