Bard's Role Can't Post

Is it okay to "tweak" Bard's role to make him less Aragorn-like?

I think that it would be a necessity especially if F2 does wind up being Aragorn-centric.

There is some really great stuff in the FAN ART forum!!!!

He's grim, and then ambitious. [In reply to] Can't Post

There's not much more than that to Bard, a minor character who Tolkien underplays (rather deliberately, I think). If the filmmakers don't beef up his role, as they need not, then there should be no danger of viewers finding him a rehash of Aragorn.

His motivation is different [In reply to] Can't Post

from Aragorn's. He is, as you say, "grim" and more concerned with laketown, and protecting its people from the corrupt Master.
I think he is less noble than Aragorn.
If the writers follow the book closely which I'm sure they will, Bard will not be another Aragorn.

Bard's a pretty rough cookie [In reply to] Can't Post

compared with Aragorn, who was raised in Rivendell, the height of ME civilization. In comparison, Laketown would be at best a frontier outpost. Bard would have had meagre education, had traveled little, and certainly had no pretensions of royalty. I think there's no worry about his being "Aragorn-like".

Grim! [In reply to] Can't Post

Yes, I remember re-reading the Hobbit a few months ago, and realising for the first time just how much emphasis JRRT seemed to put on making sure we understood that Bard was grim! I then lent the Hobbit to a friend who hadn't read it before, and they noticed the same thing! Grim Bard!

I don't think that should be too hard to do [In reply to] Can't Post

since Bard is described as a bit rougher around the edged, imho, at least when he's challenging the Master of Lake-town. Later, when he's with Thranduil and Gandalf at the camp on the mountain, he's more Aragorn-esque.

But honestly, I don't think there'll be any problem with people confusing Aragorn and Bard. Actually, it's kind of cool how the men who were normally thought of as a bit outside the circle each end up being leaders and the movers-and-shakers of their moments in history because of their courage, integrity and loyalty. :) They're each thrust into those leadership roles as they step forward to save others and not as power seekers. Not too shabby!

I agree [In reply to] Can't Post

Bard is definitely much more 'grim', but his story-arc is sort of similar, heir to the throne, kingdom in shambles, through his courage he regains lead of his people...I'm being very very general, but you get it.

Grim is certainly an accurate word... [In reply to] Can't Post

Though nowadays he may have been described by his colleagues as a "wet blanket". Remember his attitude when the dwarves came?

It would certainly be interesting to see this man- certainly less noble than Aragorn, Boromir, and Faramir- come to be king. I don't want another Aragorn, myself.
