Well, look at that! Another Friday is upon us! A big thank-you to gramma for taking the bar last week. B.G. and I were in the Caribbean with my family. One of their kids is getting ready to start medical school, and the other, prepping a final project, then out to get a job in medical research (they're twins). So, we snuck in this trip as it might be the last trip we get to go on together for a while. Other than that, we (and most of the rest of the U.S.) are gearing up for a monster winter storm. It's already bitter cold (10 f, -12 C), but luckily, we'll be on the western edge of it and see very little snow. So, the bar is stocked with Bailey's for hot chocolate and coffee, and the buffet features warm chili and stews today, so grab a a drink, a plate, and a blankey, and settle into a comfy chair. For those of you who are in warmer climes, the blender is warming up! *puts quarters on juke box* something to distract from the weather will do nicely! p.s. announcement re the forum migration to appear at the top of many boards as I can get them posted. Happy weekend, everyone!!

Brrr, Altaira, this is definitely the weather for a big mug of hot cocoa with a generous dollop of Bailey's! What a change from the sunny Caribbean, but I'm glad you all were able to enjoy some warm sunshine together. We're preparing for the "big snow" hitting us Sunday into Monday, latest forecast indicates 1-2 feet/ 30-60 cm of the fluffy stuff, and fortunately it's supposed to be "dry", making shoveling easier. We might have power outages here, but down in the southern states they're expecting ice, which just about guarantees outages. Anyone living there, get prepared now! I've made cookies, and will be off to the grocery store shortly for cold cuts and more bread, and maybe a fruit tray - why not have a "picnic"! Hm, maybe I should pick up a bottled coffee or two... Let's see if this will warm us up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bg0tFRea0wA

Eeeps! Good thing it will by dry and fluffy. And, yes! Storm picnics can be fun. We did the same and stocked up on food and drinks both for the storm, and for the football playoffs this weekend. Go Broncos!! Enjoy the nibbles and stay warm!!

It would have absolutely been so sad to miss out on that once-in-a-lifetime celebration. What achievements! :D And I'm glad everyone made it home safe and sound. I'm sitting in -10 degree weather (wind chill factored) mid-day. This is supposed to last at least 1 to 2 days more. I've got all the food, water, firewood, and gassed-up hobbity to be ready for anything. So far, so good. What helps is that it is SO SUNNY outside! That even brightens things up even during a storm. I think I'll be missing the worse part of the storm since there's little or no snow added to this. My family downstate and up north are definitely telling a different story. I'll definitely dump some Kahlua into my Cafe Vienna home-made coffee and fill a bowl with some of that stew. I've got to go out an do some quick outside chores; but this foodstuff makes it easier to face :D THANK YOU! And THANK YOU for taking such great care of us Altaira. Here at Fiesta, but especially with the monumental challenge of tackling our forum migration. *big hug* YOU ROCK! Have a great weekend... and enjoy the football games that are also reaching intensity! ;)

I'm glad you're getting ready with cookies and coldcuts :D PICNICS ARE AWESOME! But it tells me you're already totally ready for the most challenging part of winter storms ;) Are you going to watch some games this weekend? *giggle* My son-in-law if ready to go! Hopefully, he won't get called in to work. As the head of one of the maintenance depts at a university... these things always seem to happen when he finally has some of his most favourite time off. Food, games, and fresh batteries in the remote ;) Have a GREAT weekend... and please stay safe!

Hoo boy the store was crowded! But we're all set to picnic this weekend, whether or not we lose power. There's a UConn Women Huskies game tomorrow, and we'll be playing board games Sunday. They're not going to have your son-in-law come in extra, are they? Stay warm, gramma, you've been getting an Arctic chill!

Sound like you're well-prepared, but I hope you don't have to stay outdoors for too long. When you come in though, you can enjoy that hot cafe Vienna, a warm blankie, and pets in your lap. Have a great, and hopefully very warm, indoorsy weekend!

May your power stay on, so you can watch the games - and I hope the teams are playing somewhere that's a bit warmer!

I'm glad you could make the most of your family time. It's been very stormy around Aotearoa this week, too - tragically so. Massive rain has caused massive slips. Two confirmed deaths (a grandmother and grandson whose house was engulfed by a landslide); six missing and almost certainly dead at a campground in Mt Maunganui (a landslide that engulfed several campervans and a shower block); and in the nearest town to us, a man swept away in his car (still missing, but again, almost certainly dead). Massive damage to houses and infrastructure, too. January used to be a month of fairly reliable heat and sunshine for families to enjoy the school holidays; now it's a time of year that brings our fiercest storms. The Mr and I are safe and well, as are our family members, and very grateful to live where we do (elevated above floodwaters, but not close to any steep slopes). Rather weary of day after day of strong winds and dumps of rain, but when thinking of those who have lost so much, we really can't complain. Brighter (albeit comparatively trivial) news: you might recall that our car's aircon broke down in late November. After a long wait for replacement parts, this week it was *fixed*! We now have cool air and an efficient de-mister again - I was beginning to think summer would be over before it was sorted. Lots of baking over the last couple of days. I made cereal and crackers; Mr Kimi made baguettes, nutmeg cake and some uncooked hazelnut bits (can't call them cookies or biscuits, as they're not cooked). I'm about to make some smoked fish paste, which freezes well and lasts us for ages. We've been increasingly dining on garden bounty - tabbouleh salad for Thursday's dinner, and roasted beetroot last night. The berries are taking a hammering from all this rain, as are the tomatoes, but there's time for a recovery when (if) the weather turns. Wishing everyone a pleasant (and safe) weekend.

So much loss! How do you get your mind around that? There couldn't be much warning! I'm glad you're safe; but wow! Such a relief that you've got the air working in your car. That had to make for some very long rides. I hope you have a wonderful AND SAFE weekend!

I feel so badly for those caught up in the disasters, and am glad your families have stayed safe! Smoked fish paste? What kind of fish do you use, and what do you use this for?

We've been reading about the terrible weather, mudslides, etc. It's a blessing that you're safe, if a bit soggy. Congrats on getting the A/C fixed! It makes such a difference. And, I see you and Mr. Kimi have had yet another productive culinary weekend so far. I love roasted beetroot, but they're a bit messy for me to tackle on a regular basis. So, I found a nice pickled variety in jars that I like to add to salads. I guess the fact that you fed yourselves well after all that hard work goes without saying. Have a lovely rest of the weekend!

We have the fish paste as an aperitif, generally on my oat-walnut crackers. I buy whatever sustainably caught fish is readily available, preferably a locally-smoked one. This time I used a native fish called kahawai, one that's often just used as bait fish, and is therefore fairly economical. It's delicious smoked. Pulling the bits off the bones and skin is a little fiddly, but well worth the effort.
