*flicks the towels off the beer pumps* Welcome, one and all, to an autumnal (or spring, depending on where you are) Fiesta! In this corner of the Shire the autumn colours are brightening up the grey days – crimson, russet, amber, gold - and squirrels are scuttling around burying horse chestnuts, acorns etc. It's the right time here for cider, amber ale, ruby ale, hot chocolate, crusty bread, tangy cheese, chutney, gingerbread, golden syrup tart, toffee/candy apples – all the goodies are ready on the Green Hobbit buffet so come and help yourself, relax and share your personal favourite seasonal treats and the experiences of your week! Cheers, folks!

Can you imagine what a Muppet 'The Lord of the Rings' would be like?!* I mean, it worked for 'A Christmas Carol'... I'm struggling to picture Miss Piggy as Galadriel, but at least they have Sam Eagle ready to fly. Kermit and Fozzie Bear as Frodo and Sam...oh dear...! I'll be thinking about that all weekend now... Edit: It's time to pile up blankets, it's time to douse the lights; it's time to trick the Ringwraiths on the Hobbit Show tonight...

Two things I miss most because of my issue with wheat: croissants and those really light glazed donuts. There are no GF alternatives. I can find GF cake donuts but . . . meh. I am looking forward to pumpkin pie. And pumpkin muffins following a recipe I got from a GF bakery. The secret? Be "clove-forward." So yummy. But for now, a big piece of ginerbread will do me! This last week involved several meals out with friends. We've had a really nice Indian summer which is ending as of tomorrow, so today I think the catio is coming down. I'll still let the cat go out on leash when it's nice, if he insists, but lately he's taken against the leash so we'll see.

I'm preparing for spring planting: we have a long weekend coming at the end of the month and I'm getting my plants acquired now so that I'm ready to plant-out on the first day, rather than scrambling with other gardeners at nurseries on the Saturday. That's my main errand today (as well as getting materials to rebuild my compost bins, which have rotted down to near ground level). Also, I've bought my first Christmas presents! My brother is a huge World War buff (he's who I went to when I was stuck writing my Arcanist's Tattoo novel and needed an idea for a battle tactic) and I came across a kite of a WWII Spitfire and thought, I have to get that for him. I also got a brightly coloured butterfly kite for his wife - and for me? A pterodactyl. They've arrived, and I'm hopeful for wind this weekend so that I can give mine a try! I haven't flown a kite since I was a kid so this could be huge fun or a disaster - let's see! Have a great weekend, everyone!

to find good GF cakes and pastries! My daughter has found a range of GF cake mixes that are above average; apparently leaving the mixture to stand for a while before cooking helps to soften the slightly gritty texture of the rice flour. Enjoy the pumpkin muffins!

Greetings, GH, and thank you for opening the bar! I'm ready to crash into bed. Had a lovely seniors' day trip to mid-state to take a ride on an old steam engine train through hills of at-their-peak foliage. We'd been wondering if the Nor'Easter that hit during the weekend would have blown away most of them, but not yet! Then rushed home to grab my plate of brownies and head to a town Historical Society pot-luck and program. Excellent presentation from a teacher who started researching Benedict Arnold's burning of New London, and thanks to sources available now came across a multitude of first-hand accounts that disproved many myths surrounding that event. I've been telling the squirrels to get going on hoarding away all the acorns that have fallen. Saw something unusual a couple days ago: a Coopers Hawk was sitting on the ground within a couple meters of our bird feeders, not bothering them, and the small birds stayed active at it. Then we realized: he was nibbling away at something under a claw - it looked like a chipmunk. No wonder the other creatures had no fear, the hawk had already gotten his meal. What's the lastest things you've been doing in your photography class?

My snapdragons overwintered last winter and did well this year; they're hardy stock, so I've saved seeds from them to grow more for next year. Happily, the slugs don't seem to like them! Enjoy your planting; it's a time full of promise. The kites sound great! Good luck with the trial flight. I've seen pterodactyl kites online, it's a wonderful idea. I start my festive shopping early too, usually when I'm away somewhere. Have fun!

Glad there were still leaves to admire. I've planted a young amelanchier in my front garden, which put on a brief but delightful show - most of the leaves have fallen now. They don't last long, but I do like them. We have sparrowhawks hunting around the gardensand teh squirrelsarebusy. There's a horse chestnutj ust across the road so I end up with a lot of those seedlings in spring from forgotten nuts; my garden is only small so they have to come out! We have different competitions, some judged by the group and some by outside judges. Upcoming titles are 'Weathered', 'Glass, 'Geometric shapes', 'People' and 'Pastimes'. I'll be photographing some of my patchwork for the last one and might bribe my grandsons to sit for 'People'. Should be fun!

Sam's certainly lost some weight... must have been avoiding the taters! Gollum looks very odd with clothes on and Saruman really suits that look. Someone must have had a lot of fun putting that together - thanks for sharing!

My purchases included a new compost bin to replace the two rotted-out ones so I spent two hours putting it together and transferring the compost either into the new bin or onto the garden. My poor back did not approve! I loved snapdragons as a kid - such brightly coloured flowers. Good on you for growing them from seed! You have more patience than I do. It doesn't look like this weekend will be a kite weekend: today didn't have wind while tomorrow's wind comes with rain. I have a toy and can't play with it.

Loved them as a kid - flowers you could play with! Planted some here and yes, many of them overwintered and this year I had very tall (3 feet) & prolific ones - in fact, the pink-and-white ones are still going strong, as are the dahlias, so it's not time to put the garden to bed just yet. We almost got down to freezing last week but looks like it will be mild for the rest of the month.

Including for yourself! Your brother is going to love that kite. Why am I not surprised that wooden compost bins...turn into compost, also. Hopefully that job doesn't have to be done very often.

I hope you have some good kite weather soon! The worst bit about growing snapdragons etc from seed is the pricking out - that's a pain! Worth it in the long run though. My compost bin's plastic - no mainenance required!

And the birds love their berries! Have you ever played conkers with the horse chestnut seeds? I've got one that belonged to my Dad, he was born in Ohio, which has the nickname "the Buckeye State", as the buckeye/horse chestnut is the state tree. The buckeye is the mascot of his alma mater, Ohio State U. Would your patchwork also be considered "Geometric shapes"? I can just imagine what kinds of silly poses your grandsons will want to do!

Thank you for the reminder, I've got to pick up some canned pumpkin. I've tried making them from scratch, but as I get older it's harder to cut them up. Cloves add a nice touch to a lot of recipes! A pinch in stews, taco mix, and roast veggies is very nice.

which I'm stoked about as I *won't* have to do a back-aching replacement every five years or so. It's also got sliding doors at the bottom so I can pull out the rotted compost easily - and it didn't cost the earth to buy! I'm really happy with it.

And you're so right about the fall colours. The country roads around my home are like a giant flower arrangement. :D Thanks so much for grabbing the towel, GH :D I've been on the road and scuttling like a squirrel prepping for colder weather. I've clocked over 300 miles in the last 5 days just going to appointments with daughter & g'son. Although, I did throw a little adventure to a crazy packed old book store planted in an very small town converted drug store complete with soda-fountain counter and benches. Though you have to dig through the piles of books to find it ;) There are 4 isles in the main floor, then every side room (including the bathroom) have more stacks of books! There's room for one person to easily walk the rows and heaven help you if someone needs to get past :)
Have a GREAT weekend!
We have been there and back again. TIME Google Calendar
