***Baggins Birthday Party Game: Party Poetry! Can't Post

And a Very Happy September 22, 2025 to you all!

For this poetical game celebrating the mutual birthday of our Hobbit heroes, let us celebrate the co-travelers of Bilbo's and Frodo's adventures with rhymes befitting Rivendell's Hall of Fire in the Last Homely House (which just happens to be my favoritest spot in all of Middle-earth). Give poems old or new, and choose your favourite folk from either -

The Hobbit:
Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin, Fili, Kili, Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Ori, Nori, Dori, Oin, Gloin

or LOTR:
Frodo, Gandalf, Sam, Merry, Pippin, Aragorn, Gimli, Boromir, Legolas

And let's add some Ladies of Influence, because I want to:
Galadriel, Arwen, Eowyn

I offer the following poor poems as examples to be easily bested. Any other form that suits you suits the occasion.

Ah, the silliness of limericks!

There once were an uncle and nephew
Whose travels required a few crew
There were Men, Dwarves and Tooks
Tramping through these fine books
Come on choose one, but better yet two!

And then there are nursery rhymes such as:

Pippin and Merry, feet so hairy.
What magic made Hobbits grow?
T'was draughts of the Ents.
That made them tall gents
As had never strode up Bagshot Row.

Haiku with its references to nature without rhyming for, perhaps, a more sedate state of mind:

Legolas declared,
"Choose an otter for swimming..."
"Say what now?" gaped Sam.

Write on!

Modern Hobbit Hobbyist [In reply to] Can't Post

Fantastic game, Lissuin! Allow me to revisit this oldie-but-goodie. This was crafted by long-ago poster Aerlinn, in a long-ago time.

I am the very model of a modern hobbit hobbyist
I know by heart the bulk of gramma's Geeky Observation Lists
And who played Aragorn at first and why they say he was dismissed
I know what Bilbo's pockets held, and what was in old Gollum's fist
A Drinking Song or Walking Song is something that I can't resist
Of Gamgee genealogy I'm satisfied I have the gist
On matters Middle-earth at large I'm teeming with a lot o' news
With many cheerful facts about how dragons mind their p's and q's

Geek chorus:
With many cheerful facts about how dragons mind their p's and q's

I know what Mae govannen means, and also too Namárië
(I'm not well versed with Ish ka-kwi, but it's discourteous, so that's okay)
In short to a degree it seems to non-geeks quite far round the twist
I am the very model of a modern hobbit hobbyist.

Geek chorus:
In short to a degree it seems to non-geeks quite far round the twist
She is the very model of a modern hobbit hobbyist.

I know the Shire's hist'ry, of Harfoots, Stoors, and Fallohides
The Battle of Greenfields against Golfimbul and more besides
I quote in Quenya quantities of ancient Elvish argument
I can cite the difference twixt an elephant and Oliphaunt
I know what makes ithildin shine and mithril mining dangerous
(Though Balrog wings and red/ripe things are matters that we'll not discuss)
Then I can hum "Into the West" and "May It Be" (not like greendragon)
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Bakshi's done. *

Geek chorus:
And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Bakshi's done.

I know how many Orcs were hung in Shelob's larder cursing foul
Then tell you ev'ry detail of what's underneath a Nazgûl's cowl
In short to a degree it seems to non-geeks quite far round the twist
I am the very model of a modern hobbit hobbyist.

Geek chorus:
In short to a degree it seems to non-geeks quite far round the twist
She is the very model of a modern hobbit hobbyist.

One has to know just what is meant by "mathom", "mithril", and "mellyrn"
I do, and know at sight an Entwife from a most unciv'lized huorn
I know the Stewards of Gondor (and the Captain thence especially)
And I've a guess as to the reason the Blue Wizards were all absentee
I can speak to mearas, eagles, dragons, foxes, Rohirrim
And know which is which betwixt the twain of Haradrim and Herugrim
And where the River Running runs and what's doin' on the Anduin
And how many cats there were which hailed Berúthiel their queen

What was found amidst the flotsam and the jetsam and which was which
What Éowyn was thinking when of genders she did make the switch
And what else Arwen was doing as she made the banner stitch by stitch
How Merry, Pippin, and Frodo would do if asked to play quidditch
What might have been had Gandalf's plans all gone along without a hitch...
With geekiness like this it's clear in TORn I've found my perfect niche -
In short to a degree it seems to non-geeks quite far round the twist
I am the very model of a modern hobbit hobbyist.

This is one I had not yet found to delight in! Aerlinn was most well-qualified to claim the title, indeed!
This was a great one to start us off, meldenya!
Cheers!

Here we go! :D [In reply to] Can't Post

Awesome Game Choice, Lissuin! THANK YOU!

I have dug up some of my past Haiku offerings to get me started. I will be back with some new ones fersher!

I'm feeling very hobbity today :)

The Birthday Party
Good hobbit cooking
heaved on the serving tables
stunned the partiers!

The line was endless,
with squeals and calls of delight
as plates quickly filled.

Bilbo came early
to make sure all was proper,
sampling everything.

He looked up and spied
Frodo watching with a smile
as he filled his plate.

And another Birthday Party haiku

A Party To Never Forget
Set out for the field.
The day is finally here!
One gross fill the chairs.

Fireworks by Gandalf,
Mathoms spread by Mad Baggins,
All praise the great Host!

The feast is consumed
And the speech is good and short.
What could he do next?

And one more

Timely Taters
Give me taters or
something of equal ballast
to sate my tummy.

The noise is def'ning
as I watch the clock that rules
my day and mealtimes.

Defy the master
of hands long and short, and face
without expression.

Eat them taters and
heed no 'lectronic that would
keep you in hunger.

Yes, yes... I know there aren't any electronics or clocks in Middle-earth; but there certainly are in my own parallel world! FEED ME! *rumbling tummy*

You are most definitely a Hobbit, gramma! [In reply to] Can't Post

"One gross fill the chairs."
Bilbo's use of "gross", however mathematically accurate it may be, and his guests' indignant reaction to it crack me up every time.

This morning my sister sent a link to a live web cam of sea lions. I've had it playing in the background as I've been online today. It was perfect sound effects while reading your haiku. They sound for all the world like 144 contented Hobbits after a good meal - and the aftermath of one of our family Thanksgiving dinners. Laugh Art imitating nature?

Thanks for sharing, my dear!

Why, you'd think [In reply to] Can't Post

that the most important thing on a Hobbit's mind is always...FOOD! Laugh

These are fun, gramma! Smile

Ok--here's one more batch [In reply to] Can't Post

These are from long ago. The great thing about having a bad memory... all of this is BRAND NEW! :D

Cheers!

A Hobbit's Drabble
Bilbo lived in the Shire in a hole warm and clean
Till a Wizard and Dwarves pulled him into their scheme.

Confronted by Dragon, Troll, Elf, Warg and Spider
His thoughts turned to home and his food in the larder.

He didn't want praise, silver, bright jools or gold.
He was held by the job, though not burglar nor bold.

Fighting hunger and fear; finding Sting and a Ring
The hobbit's grit grew and saved all with his cunning.

He stayed true to his word; with his friends facing battle
Till he finally heads home while his treasure bags rattle.

Birthday Haiku 9/22/09
One turns thirty-three—
The elder 'leventy-one--
Mark the day in gold.

Goblin-barkers crack—
Backarappers, squibs and sparks
Call time for supper.

Boffins by the tree,
The Hornblowers guard the ale—
So where do I sit?

A poem with little reason and no rhyme. 9/22/09
"The day is here; now drink to his health."
Their tankards rise together.
For years the ritual not only marks the day
But the love and longing for the one missing.

Yet there's cheer and laughter as they celebrate
Another year gone by.
And Sam, setting down his mug, also marks it
As another year closer
To a promise made by the seaside
While the White Gulls cried.

A Drabble – More Party Mysteries 9/22/09
"Look! There's dust rising at the end of the road again!" Several ran up the hill, straining to catch a glimpse of what was coming up the way this time. The waggon was covered; drawn by an immense horse as black as pitch. Each footfall caused the dust to slowly rise about its legs and the wide wheels stirred even more, giving the rig a mysterious air. Even the driver was hidden in the shadows under the red canopy. Amidst the scowls and shaking heads, the hobbits buzzed with guesses of what could be hidden within the slowly lumbering cart.

Where does gramma sit? [In reply to] Can't Post

Anywhere she wants to!

A poem with little reason and no rhyme, you say?
No rhyme, yes, but very good reason. That one choked me up. You had me sitting right there around the table with Sam and family.

And raise a glass to all drabble!
Cheers!
