Is that a brand, or just something you get locally? That would be ice cream nirvana for me.

Messiah Sing [In reply to] Can't Post

I just got back from my old church's annual sing-along Handel's Messiah. I had to drive almost 3 hours in snow, rain, dark, and sleet on slushy roads to get there, and drove much too fast so I could make it on time, then another 3 hours to get home, and it was totally worth it. I was worried the weather would keep people away, and I think numbers were down a little from the usual, but we still had maybe 150 people there, plus a 20 piece orchestra and 4 professional vocal soloists. Sure, an all-volunteer chorus that welcomes anyone walking in off the street with no rehearsal is going to be a little rough, but our enthusiasm makes up for limited talent. As usual, I was literally praying for the sopranos to hit the high notes during the Hallelujah Chorus, and as usual, they got there and pulled it off. I got a seat right in the middle of the church so I had the music coming at me from everywhere at once. It was glorious.

They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters, these see the works of the Lord, and His wonders in the deep. -Psalm 107

In a long ago age [In reply to] Can't Post

Ben & Jerry's made a Coffee Heath Bar Crunch ice cream. Something happened, and they stopped using the Heath bars. Now it's Coffee Toffee Bar Crunch, and looking up reviews, it's just not the same.

I'm at an age where ice cream and my innards no longer get along well, so I've never tried this re-make, I have only blissful memories of the original!

If you ever get out this way, Salem Valley Farms, a local small-batch ice cream haven, has a Coffee Toffee Bar ice cream, and when I last had some, it was excellent. Cool Are there ice cream stands in your area? I bet they would have this!

Wow! I'll have one of each!! THANKS! :D [In reply to] Can't Post

Christmas is almost here! And THANK YOU for the AWESOME SPREAD OF GOODIES! I know it's been crazy-busy here in my corner of Michigan, and I love it! A big part of why I get my shopping done early is so I can walk around and listen to the music, enjoy the decorations, and NOT be stressing about fighting those crowds of people rushing about! ;)

The only time I libate is to toast in the New Year and to the hope, prosperity, health, and promise of the coming year. Then my glass holds Kahlua & Cream. yummmmm!!!

Christmas is a little quieter and calmer around here each year. Most of my life raising kiddies was spent far from my family, so we didn't make it "home" for the holidays. The effort was aimed and Thanksgiving when the weather for driving was better (hopefully) and so the kids (as they became adults/moms) were left free to make plans of their own with inlaws, etc. But as the kids grew up, I insisted on continuing the wonder my parents made on Christmas morning when the presents spilled out into the room from under the tree (5 kids!) and the lights on the tree blazed away! I got in the hobbit of starting the presents early so I could have that same spillage for my girls :D

Have a wonderful Holiday everyone! And thank you, Altaira, *hugs* for taking such great care of us. Give B.G. a hug for me!

Wow! That party was cranked to HIGH from the get-go! HOW FUN! :D And the Rutter event sounds like the perfect way to celebrate the holiday.

Actually, your Christmas plans are identical to mine! Pizza is a must along with the marathon... and my daughter is invited to partake IF she has the stamina ;)

I hope you have a wonderful holiday and enjoy the solstice events today (21st). HUGS!

of the "fast forward" function whenever PJ goes too far off the rails. And yes, it's the all the extra scenes that feature Eowyn I want. Eomer finding her, Aragorn healing her, Faramir falling in love with her . . . Too bad PJ thought "Eowyn is a bad cook" was a better scene to keep in.

The most hated Middle-earth Christmas Carol [In reply to] Can't Post

(With no apologies to "Grandma Got Runover By A Reindeer")

Gandalf fell into the depths of Moria,
On the way to Mordor Durin’s Day,
You may think there’s no such thing as Balrogs,
But that’s how the Grey Pilgrim passed away.

Gandalf chose the path through Moria,
Though Strider begged him not to go.
But crows watched the Gap of Rohan,
While the High Pass of Caradhras filled with snow.

We’ve little hope now without Gandalf,
And our mood is dark and black.
The Fellowship can’t help but wonder,
Do we carry on the Ringquest or turn back?
(Let’s turn back!)

Gandalf fell into the depths of Moria,
On the way to Mordor Durin’s Day,
You may think there’s no such thing as Balrogs,
But that’s how the Grey Pilgrim passed away.

I just got goosebumps reading this. I'm so happy it went so well... AND that you made it there and back again safely. What a white-knuckle drive you had! I think the mojo coming off the people who did make it (including those on stage) really fueled the fabulous singing... not to mention the reverie! I'm so happy you had such a wonderful experience :)

Ah, the joy of a virtual buffet! [In reply to] Can't Post

No calories - and supplies never run out even if you are a latecomer, like me! I was going to post earlier - I had a quick read through - then went to watch something on tv and ended up dozing in front of the fire. It's been a busy week, mostly with knitting group stuff, but things are calming down now. Half of the money we raised has been handed over; the rest is being handed over to another local charity tomorrow afternoon. Then I can forget about organising things until it's time to remove the festive woolly decorations from around the village during the first week in January, wash them, mend where necessary and put them back in storage until the summer, when some of them will come out again.
Solstice greetings to you all; no dramatic sunrise or sunset today, sadly; we had some sunshine in the middle of the day but both ends were just grey. At least it was dry!No chance of a white Christmas, either. Still, that always causes travel problems when so many people are visitng family and friends, because our infrastructure just isn't geared up for it in most places,so perhaps it's just as well! Enjoy what is for most a much-needed midwinter break, however you spend it. Cheers!

A happy Solstice to you! [In reply to] Can't Post

Now that sounds delightful, dozing in front of a fire, but I'd be reading a book! Laugh

We had snow flurries in the night and morning, leaving an inch of the frozen fluff on the ground, and with temps not expected to get above freezing for the next couple of days it's going to stay. Will you be getting together with the family on the Eve or Day or both?

I've got a turkey breast ready to start thawing. I think my guys just want more leftovers for turkey soup!

This is the place for a fiesta while the last presents are wrapped, for sure. Best wishes to you all, very nice people!

I envy some of you your seasonal snow, but here sunshine has finally replaced torrential rain and wind in this windiest spot down under, so I consider that a good trade. Pippin Cat will get his bush walks in between my packing up and cleaning in preparation for going over the mountains, taking the road past Rivendell to Wairarapa tomorrow for two weeks.

That recipe for Pavlovas from Ataahua will get tested next week! Foolproof guaranteed? Wink
And my contribution to the ice cream question is to keep Caramel ice cream in the freezer at all times and save a tablespoon or two of strong morning coffee (regular or decaf) to pour over the ice cream later in the day. Mmmmmm - even when it melts! We used to have coffee ice cream in every market here, but lately it's just disappeared. This solution ain't perfect, but needs must. Angelic

Enjoy your celebrations!
Cheerio!

About an inch of snow [In reply to] Can't Post

is as much as we're likely to see here - if that! We are usually at the mercy of Atlantic weather systems - rain and wind - but we don't get a hard freeze unless a rare Arctic plume of cold air or a sustained easterly sweeps in, shrivelling all in its path.
I'm going to my daughter's on Christmas Day; they are all vegetarian but my son-in-law's brother, wife and daughter are coming and they're vegan so the meal will be vegan. My daughter's a good cook so it will be tasty. Let's face it, being with people is the important thing, not what you eat. I had my turkey with the trimmings at the knitting group lunch last Thursday!
Enjoy your turkey breast!
