Although it was mentioned in the chat with PJ and GdT ... its all good news for NZ Article from http://www.stuff.co.nz/...es/4560853a6004.html Peter Jackson's revelation he will return to Matamata to film The Hobbit is "bloody fantastic," says the town's mayor, Hugh Vercoe. Jackson made the surprise announcement during a live internet chatroom discussion at the weekend. He said he wanted to use the same New Zealand locations from Lord of the Rings, as well as the same actors, for The Hobbit and a sequel that will be shot in 2010. It will include rebuilding the elaborate Hobbiton village on a Matamata farm. "There have been rumours that they were going to come back and shoot it here. It would have been wrong to make it anywhere else," an elated Mr Vercoe told the Times today. "Fans of the movie know the scenery, they know what it looks like, so to have this confirmed is great news for the town." Sue Whiting, manager of the Matamata Public Relations Association, said first she heard of the news was last night. "We are looking forward to them coming back to film in the Matamata region. Hobbiton has been an exceptional success in raising the profile of the town. Many people were sceptical that it would only last five months or so, but we are still extremely busy." The Hobbiton farm, 10 minutes out of Matamata, received between 25,000 and 30,000 visitors a year. Jackson revealed further plans for the $US150 million ($NZ190 million) project in a one-hour "live chat" on the internet yesterday with the films' director, Guillermo del Toro, in London. Several fans wanted to know whether New Zealand's scenery, one of the most praised features in Jackson's trilogy, would be used. "We hope, with the permission of the landowner, that we will rebuild Hobbiton bigger and even better than what it was for Lord of the Rings in the same location," said Jackson, the films' executive producer. "It is unlikely we will need any locations outside of New Zealand which has always been the perfect middle-earth." The set has been returned to its natural state, but 17 of the 37 hobbit holes and some structures have been left. Thousands of tourists each year still visit it. The Hobbit would be released in December 2011. Cheers Elven

I've been in New Zealand on a LOTR-location tour in 2005, and visited Matamata/Hobbiton then. I was afraid they weren't going to use that site again, since it is still open to the public and so well known to every-one. But it will be back, yes (I was the one cheering so loudly when PJ answered that questions ). So I'm planning another trip down to New Zealand in 2012. Hopefully the locations will be visitable, and the premier of the second movie is in Wellington (keeping fingers crossed). ps. Envious of all the folks living in New Zealand, so close to the fire!

Our guide at Hobbiton in March was saying they hoped to get permission to rebuild Sam and Rosie's hole, which is one of those that was destroyed. Admittedly, Sam and Rose won't be living there, but surely the Gaffer was in residence at the time of The Hobbit! Hm, could that be a cameo for Sean Astin?
* * * * * * * Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight? A man may do both. For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time. The green earth, say you? That is a mighty matter of legend, though you tread it under the light of day!

.. when they are actuallly filming. I did that back in 2000, and it was very exciting to see them filming Helms Deep-stuff, wander through the Lorien-forest after the crew had just packed up and hike around Wellington-locations like Bree, the Shire and the Isengard grounds...
