Discussion update: Shire and all things Hobbit. Can't Post

It turns out I lost track and didn't realize no one took the "Changes in the Shire from A Long-Expected Party to The Grey Havens” which could include Oliphaunt’s 'Bilbo’s worldview (Shire-view?) versus Frodo’s worldview from departure to homecoming to departure.” Does anyone want to take a whack at it?

And then it looks like we're on break for a bit, until Elentari does the last post on our current topic. This one is "Changes in the Shire from A Long-Expected Party to The Grey Havens” which could include Oliphaunt’s 'Bilbo’s worldview (Shire-view?) versus Frodo’s worldview from departure to homecoming to departure,”7. "Evolution of hobbits and how their seed of courage had been awakened: The growth of courage in the the 'Quest Hobbits,'" including Bilbo in the Hobbit and LOTR, and also Fredegar I think, with Elentari’s idea of Filght to the Ford as an essential part of the theme of bravery.'

As an Elf, I would say both yes and no [In reply to] Can't Post

I feel like all other discussions nibbled around this topic about Shire changes like mice nibbling the crust off bread. So have we covered it already, perhaps?

But I can also infer that there could be a more head-on discussion of Arcadian Shire that Frodo leaves behind to Dystopian Lotho/Sharkey Shire that he and the other meet when they come home. That to me is less about hobbit culture and more about how their culture was corrupted through tyranny and foreign occupation with a large dose of malice mixed in. Would we want to discuss the nature of dystopia assailing utopia?

Maybe we would talk instead (or also) about how resilient Shire culture was and wasn't (A: they capitulated easily, and B: they exploded like a volcano and gladly united under the right leadership to restore their way of life, and they bounced back with remarkable resilience).

So in short I wonder if the original topic is what we still want to discuss, or a modified one, and then modified how?

Very much what I was thinking-- [In reply to] Can't Post

there's inevitably a lot of overlap.
But! I think your ideas cover perfectly what we haven't fully touched on yet.
How 'bout I turn it into a short post in the next couple of days, and see what we get? Smile

I think i can manage something in two weeks [In reply to] Can't Post

Will try to browse previous threads in meantime. :) I already know which chapters i'm pulling from. Thanks for messaging me about the timing and being flexible!

"By Elbereth and Luthien the fair, you shall have neither the Ring nor me!" ~Frodo

"And then Gandalf arose and bid all men rise, and they rose, and he said: 'Here is a last hail ere the feast endeth. Last but not least. For I name now those who shall not be forgotten and without whose valour nought else that was done would have availed; and I name before you all Frodo of the Shire and Samwise his servant. And the bards and the minstrels should give them new names: Bronwe athan Harthad and Harthad Uluithiad , Endurance beyond Hope and Hope Unquenchable.." ~Gandalf, The End of the Third Age , from The History of Middle Earth series

"He knew now why Beregond spoke his name with love. He was a captain that men would follow, that he would follow, even under the shadow of the black wings."- Siege of Gondor, RotK

Sounds good. And don't worry if [In reply to] Can't Post

you need to change or postpone.

Looking forward to seeing it!
