A sandwich for the homeless Can't Post

Here's a story I thought people here would enjoy:

A few days ago, we took an outing to a nearby town (Akaroa - New Zealand). Doing a bit of window-shopping, we wandered into an upscale jewelry store (the Blue Pearl) on the pier. Inside, I was surprised to see a picture of a rather hairy Ian Mckellan (and friends - they look familiar but I'm not sure who they are) on the wall. The ownder related the story to me. Turns out Ian and friends had come into the shop some time ago, and the owner's (adult) daughter was helping Ian. The owner walked in and saw him without knowing who he was. She said she has a strict policy of not giving money to the homeless, but she's happy to feed them, so without speaking to her daughter she went back out to their little kitchen and fixed him a sandwich. She came back to the showroom and handed it to him, causing her daughter to nearly die of embarassment. Explanations ensued, and everyone had a good laugh. They took a picture of Ian and friends and later hung it on their wall. The owner said she should have known better: his coat alone probably cost several thousand dollars.

Just goes to show you never know who might visit your shop in New Zealand!

(I think I've managed to include pictures of the Blue Pearl, and of The Picture on the wall, as attachments to this post. Can't seem to get them to post here in the body.)

Well, it's not the first time he's been mistaken for a vagabond. [In reply to] Can't Post

One time, he was in rehearsals for the Waiting for Godot stage play, and he took a break and went outside to sit in the fresh air. He'd taken his hat off ... and a passerby dropped some money into it. Laugh

Nice to see you here, Ro. Smile

I'm sure he finds it amusing too - I guess it's a good way to go incognito!

Thanks, Ataahua. It's nice to drop in for a visit. :-)

Oh, that's funny! [In reply to] Can't Post

Fantastic picture of them! But Sir Ian does often look rather vagabond-ish, doesn't he!

I was able to get the second picture to display, but I've found that the Inline function does not like jpg names that have spaces in them (the first one is Blue Pearlsmall). If you'd like to rename it and upload it, it should post okay.

In fact, maybe that's been happening, and the coat has now become the mere remains of a vest . . .

That's a great image! [In reply to] Can't Post

He was very gracious. There was a young woman who had made a little model Gandalf, and also had her battered copy of LOTR for him to sign. He was lovely to her and I'm sure she treasures the memory.

He came back in 2012 to do his one man show, which was an earthquake fundraiser. A lot of the money went towards restoring the Theatre Royal here in Christchurch, which is where he performed Waiting for Godot. At the interval he came out and happily mingled with everyone.

What a great pic. :) [In reply to] Can't Post

What I loved about that one-man tour of his is that he held the show in old theatres, including Kings Theatre in Stratford, of all places. (The town is tiny.) Although I'm sure that the town's name piqued his interest. Cool

In fairness of full disclosure: [In reply to] Can't Post

Jim Hickey (yes, this goes back that far) rang and asked me to get a photo as he knew NP was being hit by strong winds and big waves, so there was no competition involved to get my pic on air. Tongue
