A day late [In reply to] Can't Post

as I was (pleasantly) on the go much of yesterday. A quieter day awaits - Mr Kimi is making his nutmeg cake, and a friend is coming for afternoon tea (that cake is his favourite).

So many goodies there, Gramma! The Santa cake is particularly appealing.

I made my Christmas cake a while back, and apart from feeding it a little brandy when I think of it, it's stored away ready to go. Yesterday I made mincemeat tarts and a panforte, and have declared the Christmas baking completed. The Elderflower Fizz should be ready to sample today, so I'm hoping for a little sunshine by aperitif time.

We had our first barbecue of the season, and it was lovely to sit out on the terrace at the end of a busy day with a lot of useful things done. For dessert Mr Kimi made a version of Eton Mess using the last of last autumn's blackberries, and it was delicious.

This week I'm booked in to have a wisdom tooth extracted - not exactly a fun outing, but I'm looking forward to the aftermath. My lower wisdom teeth, which came through when I was in my teens, have rested in glorious isolation for years, as there was no room in my upper jaw for the matching pair, which tried coming through at a 45 degree angle and had to be removed when I was in my 20s. So the lower ones are no use at all, and this one is very difficult to get the toothbrush around and the floss alongside. I had a checkup last week, and everything was fine except for some decay in that tooth. The dentist said she could fill it, or I could consider having it removed, and I jumped at the suggestion. It won't be missed - I just hope it won't spoil my festive eating :)

Wishing everyone a pleasant weekend.

Lovely festive activity. [In reply to] Can't Post

And what a lovely gift for your kitty. I've read that about 50% of cats respond to catnip, and our two boys embodied that - Sura would either completely ignore it or give it a slightly dirty look, while Kimi-cat would become utterly blissful for the duration. I had to protect it from his attentions when I grew it in the garden.

Ugh, a trying time of year [In reply to] Can't Post

combined with a very trying job! Best wishes for finding somewhere much, much better soon, cats. And good wishes for nothing worse than a post-vaccine sore arm!

Such a great way to celebrate your birthdays. [In reply to] Can't Post

And an outdoor caroling party complete with a bonfire - perfect. What with that and your solstice gathering, what a great weekend!

Going half-shares in a cake [In reply to] Can't Post

What an excellent idea. And of course you had to sample it - how else would you know it's all right? :)

What a way to spend the week before Christmas [In reply to] Can't Post

getting an annoying tooth extracted - may it all go smoothly and quickly!

You've got quite an aromatic home this weekend! Does your mincemeat have actual meat in it? And how did the Fizz turn out? Smile

on your way to becoming a toothless crone? [In reply to] Can't Post

Wink

I've had a couple teeth out and they healed up just fine in a few days. Last time I tried nitrous oxide for the first time, and while I was pleasantly buzzed the assistant told a long and funny story, so I was oblivious to what the dentist was doing until she sat back and said "okay, we're done!" I hadn't even noticed when the tooth came out! Hopefully neither will you.

Not sure if I'm done with Christmas baking yet. Made my cranberry bread that I give out to friends, a large batch of pistachio-cranberry shortbread cookies, and fudge. But I may do some iced cookies too . . .

True! [In reply to] Can't Post

Another problem in this country in certain arable areas can be rape seed fields; they're harvested for making rapeseed oil and the bright yellow flowers are striking, but after they've gone to seed and just before harvest, there's an unpleasant 'decaying brassica' smell about the area.

I only ever had the bottom two wisdom teeth [In reply to] Can't Post

Does that make me 'halfwise'? They were impacted and had to be removed when I was in my last year at high school. I felt like I'd been hit by a truck, but my gums soon healed. Hope yours heal up in time for Christmas!

BBQ and festive goodies :D YUM! [In reply to] Can't Post

But I said "OW" out loud at the announcement of wisdom teeth pulling! *still cringing* Yeah, it's a good idea to just get it done, but doesn't the timing just figure!? I hope the tooth isn't on your dominant chewing side ;)

I hope you enjoyed your visit with your friend! They're were definitely in for a treat with the Mister's baking! :D

Well, [In reply to] Can't Post

no longer a maid and never a mother, so I suppose my options are dwindling :)

Very good to hear that yours healed up so well and quickly. I had nitrous oxide at the emergency clinic when a doctor tried unsuccessfully to yank my wrist bones back into position, and it was definitely inadequate for that level of pain with no other relief (my GP's eyes watered in sympathy when I later recounted it to her), but I also had it many years ago for some dental work and found myself pleasantly floating, so we shall see. My dentist is a lovely, kind person, who assured me she'll use all the painkillers necessary!

Oh, your baking is inspiring! I'm sure your friends will be delighted.

I'd rather get it over with, though [In reply to] Can't Post

than have things hanging over me till the New Year.

Yes, the house smelled lovely! Fruit mincemeat, no meaty meat in it. The fizz turned out very nice, and very fizzy.

Thank you! Me too :) [In reply to] Can't Post

I think we'd be wiser if we could find a way to do without those annoying extra teeth that don't fit in our jaws. I've read that increasing numbers of people never do get them, which is perhaps evolution in action.

I have a dominant chewing side. Though I suppose I will now, for the next little while!

Thanks, Gramma.
