Who has the precioussss? I do and would like this thread to have any discussion on the extensions and new material. :) I will be slowly reading it and am eager to share . TORN also did an article of the differences https://www.theonering.net/torwp/2023/11/09/117158-whats-new-and-revised-in-the-updated-letters-of-j-r-r-tolkien/
"By Elbereth and Luthien the fair, you shall have neither the Ring nor me!" ~Frodo "And then Gandalf arose and bid all men rise, and they rose, and he said: 'Here is a last hail ere the feast endeth. Last but not least. For I name now those who shall not be forgotten and without whose valour nought else that was done would have availed; and I name before you all Frodo of the Shire and Samwise his servant. And the bards and the minstrels should give them new names: Bronwe athan Harthad and Harthad Uluithiad , Endurance beyond Hope and Hope Unquenchable.." ~Gandalf, The End of the Third Age , from The History of Middle Earth series "He knew now why Beregond spoke his name with love. He was a captain that men would follow, that he would follow, even under the shadow of the black wings."- Siege of Gondor, RotK

Have been on the road for a few days and was hoping today, at last, to pick up a copy in town - and my usual bookshop didn't have any copies! I was looking forward to pulling it off a shelf and buying it in person but now may have to take online purchase action,

https://www.tolkienguide.com/...Q1KAotlKSGuPXjkvOp8Y 131 is my favorite so far. It is an elongated letter of his summary of his whole legendarium. I also am enjoying his letters to Michael in the beginning. There is a really good one about his view on love between man and woman that has been extended.

Eager to hear your thoughts on the expanded version. :)

I finally ordered a copy today, can't wait to get it next week. I've heard some have been disappointed with the physical quality of the book, that the pages feel thin and overall it just doesn't feel very high quality. If true, that's unfortunate, as this is the only version available. Because of that, the quality isn't a deal breaker, but I'm just curious if any others who have received a copy feel like it was indeed made of a poor quality.

I'm glad that the letters have not been renumbered from the 1e - we're used to referring to, say, 'Letter 131' and at least everyone will still be looking at the same letter, though it appears people refering to 2e might have some interesting new material:
Significant material is restored, describing in detail the plot and structure of The Lord of the Rings, book by book. Also, a detailed list at the end of the letter shows a detailed list of the material that Tolkien would like considered for publication. TCG guide But asie from Letter 131, my impression from this guide is that the new stuff mostly adds material about Tolkien's life and views, and not so much new material about Middle-earth. Is that the impression you have from reading the actual book?

I've barely scratched the surface but that's my impression so far too, that there isn't a lot in the way of 'additional' content on Middle-earth. I did do a trawl for any extra tidbits on Faramir and his dysfunctional family but didn't turn anything up. The director's cut of Letter 131 is awesome though :)

Interesting that Letter 156 is apparently unchanged if that list of changes is reliable. I had wanted to see the unabridged version of that draft for the revised version of my "Gandalf the White = Saruman" theory that I am planning to finish writing someday. Well, it looks like I don't have to worry about new information arriving to complicate matters now...
