Today in Middle-earth June 21, 2942 (S.R. 1342) 1. Bilbo and Gandalf travel home. (not from the appendices - no text - a drabble) ...Even though Bilbo was anxious to rest in the familiar comfort of his own home, he agreed with Gandalf it would be wise to stop for the night. Their ponies were moving slowly under their burden of the chests of gold, silver, and other treasures accumulated during the journey. They passed the fields where the trees of Woody End could be seen in the distance and finally came to Frogmorton. It was decided they should spend the night at The Floating Log and begin fresh in the morning travelling the remaining long miles to Hobbiton and at last Bag End.

Let's see, 8 leagues from Frogmorton to Bywater, and another 3 leagues to Hobbiton for a total of 33 miles*. Yeah, They've got a little ways to go yet. Gotta say, Bilbo and Gandlaf made pretty good time if they made it to Bag End before lunch-time! * That's according to Free League's map that's on the wall next to me right now. Karen Fonstad's map from The Atlas of Middle-earth yields a slightly more conservative result of 30 miles.

I'm grateful Prof Tolkien gave us an exact date of the auction; but not a lot of guidance in terms of dates. On the other hand, I love how often he keeps the timing of activities ambiguous to give us room for or own imagination :)
If he [Bilbo] was surprised, they were more surprised still. He had arrived back in the middle of an auction! There was a large notice in black and red hung on the gate, stating that on June the Twenty-second Messrs. Grubb, Grubb, and Burrowes would sell by auction the effects of the late Bilbo Baggins Esquire, of Bag-End, Underhill, Hobbiton. Sale to commence at ten o'clock sharp.
