Would you have preferred Uma Thurman instead of Miranda Otto as Eowyn in LOTR?

Today the MTV Movie Blog relayed the story of Uma Thurman turning down the role of Eowyn in The Lord of the Rings trilogy (BTW - She regrets the decision). A quick search of TORn's news archives yielded some great old school speculation and casting rumors from 1999-2000 when it was believed that Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke were all but guaranteed parts in the trilogy. This reporter personally thinks Miranda Otto was absolutely perfect for the role and did not want to see Uma in LOTR. How do you feel? Vote!

But I will give Uma Thurman this credit: she does look a lot more like Eomer than does Miranda Otto [;)]

Heck, I didn't even want Thurman as Emma Peel in The Avengers (1998)! Big mistake. (Well, true, the entire movie was a mistake.)

I don't know that I've seen anything Uma has been in, so I can't speak to whether she'd have been any better or worse in the role.

There were things about Eowyn that I didn't like, but it had nothing to do with Miranda. As with many of the other characters, there were places where the role was badly written. So it would have been a problem, no matter who they cast.

I think Uma would have done well in that role, just as I think Ethan Hawke would have made a fine Faramir. I am glad, though, that unknown (to me) actors played those parts, because recognizing someone "famous" often takes me out of a movie for a moment.

I was just looking at some of the old casting rumors. Apparently, Kate Winslet was going to play Eowyn at one point! Now that I can't see at all.

But I have to admit, I think Uma would have done a fine job.

Now NIC CAGE as Aragorn, on the other hand ...

SWEET FANCY MOSES!!

I'd never heard that rumor before. ZOIKS!! What a spectacular train wreck that would have been!

I always imagined her as Galadriel, with her natural beauty and all, yet being very strong and at 6 foot or close to it, closer in height to Galadriel. I could imagine Uma as Galadriel being far more athletic in Valinor than Mrs. Blanchett (though she did a fine job).

I think Miranda was a perfect choice as Eowyn, she captured her brilliantly and personally now I couldn't see anyone else playing her. It was good that an actress who wasn't that well known played Eowyn as it was a fresh and altogether magical performance :D

Uma as Eowyn?? With all due respect, I think we dodged a bullet here. Ms. Thurman is a fine actress, but one of the many ingredients in the trilogy's success was the casting of great actors who could fill their roles, not megastars who would outshine the entire project. I hope the people casting "The Hobbit" remember this lesson. THE STORY, after all, is what the fans are coming to see. We don't need A-list names, just grade-A talent.

you didn't offer a stronger version of NO! as an option. ;)

I agree with reasons cited before me, but I'll add a more shallow one as well: Uma does NOT have the kind of face I imagine for Eowyn. At all. And I mean that with no disrespect to Ms. Thurman or her looks. I just imagine my favorite tomboy with a softer look to balance her tough insides, and intrigue Faramir with that contrast.

I like Uma Thurman as an actress and think she'd have made a decent Eowyn. She'd probably have played the character with a harder edge than Miranda Otto did.

But Nicholas Cage as Aragorn? Yikes! Now that was a dodged bullet!

What a truly awful film that was. I love Ralph Fiennes and was excited to see that movie, but it was one of the most shockingly poor movies I've ever seen. I don't really blame Uma Thurman though; bad script seemed to be the biggest problem...

so it's hard to know how I would have felt about Uma Thurman. I think Miranda is perfect as Eowyn, and has exactly the right kind of beauty (whatever exactly that may mean!). I agree with what most people have said, in that I would rather not see big Hollywood celebrities in these roles; big stars often tend to be themselves, rather than losing themselves in the roles. Plus I also agree with whoever suggested that Ms Thurman would have made a better Galadriel than an Eowyn; her looks seem more elvish the Rohanesque to me...

who actually liked the "camp" Avengers movie.

But Uma would have been horrible cast as Eowyn. Time and time again I am reminded of how fortunate we were with these movies.

Uma is great, but I think Miranda Otto was perfect for the White Lady of Rohan.

Seeing the name "Nicholas Cage" in the same sentence as "Aragorn" or "Lord of the Rings"......is like a virtual slap in the face! [pirate][sly]

What could have been:
Sean Connery
Nicholas Cage
Stuart Townsend
Uma Thurman

*shudder*

Uma for Eowyn? No no no. That's not to say I didn't love her in Kill Bill, I did. Miranda just has that right amount of softness and strength to be Eowyn. Miranda was the right choice.

Sorry, but I'd be seeing Kill Bill all the way through all of Eowyn's parts. Not that Uma isn't good in this sort of role, but no. Miranda was a far better choice IMO.
