Who knocked on the door?

Who do you think knocked on the door in the beginning of FOTR during Bilbo's narration? Sackville-Bagginses again?

You'd never really know but it was suggested by bilbo's line "I've got to get away from these confounded relatives, hanging on the bell all day, never giving me a moment's peace"

My copy of the FOTR-EE goes like this:

A sudden, incessant knocking on the door and a woman shouting: "Bilbo! Bilbo Baggins!"

Bilbo: I'm not at home!

He tiptoes up to the front window and peers out to identify the unwanted visitor.

Bilbo: It's the Sackville-Bagginses!

Sackville-Baggins (outside): I know you're in there!

Bilbo (in alarm): They're after the house. They've never forgiven me for living this long!

Bilbo: I've got to get away from these confounded relatives hanging on the bell all day, never giving me a moment's peace!

Thanks for the input, that was indeed the Sackville-Baginsess, but, that was not the sequence I was asking for, I asked for who knocked during his "Concerning Hobbits" monologue in the very beginning [laugh]

...I've wondered about this; Frodo is out (meets Gandalf) and he wouldn't knock, could it be Sam but most probably are the Sackville-Baggins once again [mad]

... or distant relations?

That's what Bilbo claims to have had enough of anyway, by the time Gandalf gets there!

I guess that's also why Bilbo put up that "No Admittance Except On Party Business" sign - all those early guests (and wannabe guests) must have kept coming to the door and disturbing him. And Frodo was out waiting for Gandalf, instead of being on door-answering duty - "Sticklebacks! Where is that boy?"

[tongue]

'Come, come!' he thought, 'this will not do!
I must go and find a friend;
a-walking soft I'll wander through
the Shire from end to end.'
Down he went, and he walked all night
with his feet in boots of fur;
to Delving he came in the morning light
when folks were just astir.

- Perry-the-Winkle, stanza III.

It takes even a troll more than one autumn night to walk from the Brandywine Bridge to Michel Delving; I must conclude that he probably crossed the River late on the previous night, hid for the day (if you look in the Map of the Shire, there is a quarry near Scary; that would be the reasonable place to go), passed by Bag-End around say, eight o'clock, and getting no answer, went on his sad way.
You probably were deceived by the filmmakers juxtaposing two different occasions in which young Frodo left his old, curmudgeonly uncle alone - when he started working on the Red Book, and on the morning Gandalf arrived.

All of us know what it is like to have someone else answer the phone because you don't want to talk with that person right then.... It's Bilbo trying to pawn off the Blockheaded Sackville Baggines again! [cool]

Hahahaha, we are actually talking to three JW's right now. They come every Tuesday. No, I'm NOT going to become a JW![laugh] I'm just fun to talk with them.[;)]
