"Where's Gandalf?"

As more pieces are revealed, the Hobbit’s main storyline is falling into place nicely according to the book, yet we still don’t know much about the “Where’s Gandalf?” storyline.

What has been revealed to date:
  • • Gandalf receives the key from Thrain before the unexpected party;
    • Thrain’s map is discussed when the Quest reaches Rivendell;
    • At some point Gandalf is attacked by Thrain (or the Necromancer using Thrain's dead body as host) in Dol Guldur;
    • At some point Radagast accompanies Gandalf to Dol Guldur;
    • At some point Saruman is present in Rivendell;
    • At some point Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel are present together in Rivendell;
    • While in Rivendell, Galadriel tells Gandalf that if he needs her, she will come;
    • At some point the Necromancer will make an appearance;
    • The Nazgul are mentioned;
    • Gandalf leaves the dwarves before the Trollshaws scene, and returns in time to rescue them;
    • At the time that Gandalf leaves the dwarves at Mirkwood it appears that the Council has not decided yet to attack Dol Guldur, based on the following quote from AICN: “The final day of shooting involved Mirkwood, with crazy twisted trees. Gandalf says, “I need a horse!” Someone asks, “Where are you going!?!” “In search of answers!”
At this stage I'm still searching for answers too!, which is a good thing since I prefer there are still a few surprises left for when I'm watching the movie.

On another note: Will Legolas and Tauriel really be fighting goblins before Legolas runs into the dwarves? - or could those be two separate scenes that just happened to be cut together for the video?....
 
I assume we pretty much know what's going to be in the Dol Guldur plot - mostly what you listed, and a some kind of battle sequence (magical or not). What makes me mad is not knowning when in the films this all takes place.

As for Legolas&Tauriel seemingly fighint Goblings during the same time as capturing the Dwarves.... remember the old wise wisdom The Trailer Always Lies. [tongue]
 
I think Gandalf's story is the only part of The Hobbit we know anything about...

Either before the "Good Morning" intro or as a flashback when Gandalf reveals the map and key to Thorin we will see Gandalf acquiring these items on his mission to Dol Guldur with Radagast. He sends Radagast away, Thrain attacks and before dying gives Gandalf the key and map.

They do their adventuring up until Rivendell, where they not only discuss the map and swords, like the book, will also talk about Thrain, the Necromancer and the Morgul Blade with Elrond (possibly Saruman and Galadriel will also be there, or maybe that bit comes later).

They continue their adventuring up until Mirkwood where Gandalf departs (here's where it gets speculative) my thinking is we won't see Gandalf again until film 2, where we'll see him in the opening sequence before the title. This could involve him going back to Rivendell and now meeting up with Saruman and Galadriel (if he didn't already) and then going on to attack Dol Guldur. When his business with the Necromancer is done we go back to Bilbo's perspective and don't see Gandalf again until Bo5A.

which mentioned her tracking/fighting Goblins? Interesting...of course, it's always possible that the footage of the Elves in combat is from the spider attack, and the shots of the Goblins are from another scene altogether (unless they're both in frame at the same time)?

A few other notes: Someone (I believe Carne?) on the boards spoke with a stuntman last year who mentioned he was playing a Ringwraith, so the Nazgul will be more than just mentioned.

I'd suggest that the sequence with Gandalf fighting Thrain may end with his subduing the Dwarf Lord and receiving the key then. Also very intrigued as to where Gandy and Raddy's encounter with a posessed or undead Thrain in a "stone labyrinth" (in what is apparently a trap) fits in...perhaps a flashback in Rivendell?

Also, the July 2011 Empire article mentioned PJ was planning a scene with Gandy and Elrond scouting Dol Guldur; has Elrond been replaced by Radagast, or are both present in the scene?

Perhaps the "Tomb of the Nine" sequence occurs when Gandy goes scouting ahead before the Stone Troll sequence? According to Quint, Radagast meets with Gandy and Thorin & Co. in (or near) the Trollshaw, so perhaps he was in the area assisting Gandy previously anyway...possibly he's the one who told Gandalf about the Trolls, causing him to return?

And IMO, it seems likely that the White Council storyline will be a fairly significant of both films: Film 1 could potentially end with Gandalf discovering the true identity of the Necromancer, while the debate on whether or not to attack Sauron and subsequent Dol Guldur sequence might occur in Act 1 of Film 2, while Thorin & Co. are in Laketown.
 
1. She is one of the most senior members of the White Council.
2. She is a Ring-bearer.
3. She and the Necromancer are practically neighbors.
4. Lady Galadriel brought down Dol Guldur during the War of the Ring.

But if it's a magical fight, armors aren't probably needed. Well, one can dream...
 
And no, I can't give you link to any study, because it was my dad who read that bit somewhere. He loves to remind me of it, though. Not that I mind. Girl powahhhh!!!

It could be that females who decide to join the army just happen to be the most vicious of all women, while all kinds of men enlist. Or in countries like mine, where all males serve in the army and for girls it's up to their free choice to join, such study results would be only reasonable.
 
in the first film included her wearing a breast-plate I think. I can see them going with that, though that would also mean armour for Elrond (I hope) [:P]

And Shelob before you say anything, I know that scene wasn't "canon" and you probably disliked it, but I'm not advocating or condemning that decision, I'm only pinpointing its existence.
 
I want my beautiful, powerful Elf queenie goddess so terrible in her righteous fury to be in a droolworthy armor.

Also in the news:

- Radagast needs to die in this battle. With Gandalf being all angsty about it.

- Nazgûls, they're required in my life.

- Sauron explaining his motives for his conquest mania, trying to make himself the good guy. Or at least some other character explaining them. He's the bleeping villain who drives the entire plot of the Second and the Third Ages, he should have a motive! Especially since Tolkien already gave him one, and it was beautiful.
 
Apart from Radagast's death.

I suppose it could be tragic, and very cinematic, but it's too much of a departure for PJ to consider it, IMO.

I agree on giving Sauron a motive, however. Both he and his old boss Morgoth had quite a sophisticated rationale for their drive for temporal dominion...
 
But for some reason, I don't mind. After all, Radagast is an extremly minor character that's only significant in any way because he happens to be a Wizard. Making him die at the end of Hobbit wouldn't change any future event. It wouldn't even change his own future that much, as he doesn't have such. He just... vanishes from the writings without having any closure, or even speculation like the Blue Wizards got. Having him die would give him a purpose in the story (establishing how much in the danger even the Big Guys are, letting Sauron win at least something in the mids of all the losing the baddies go through in these stories, the emotional impact on Gandalf...)
 
I forsee his death this Christmas!

Deaths in TABA are for Thorin, Fili and Kili - that will be shocking (and heartbreaking...) enough. Having Radagast die in TABA would take it away from the Dwarves. I think he should die in AUJ, especially as we know the Dol Guldur plot will probably dominate this film.
 
although people may then start questioning why Gandalf could be revived and Radagast wasn't...

Perhaps Radagast's was to aid in the Dol Guldur plot (and help little hedgehogs and bunnies). Wouldn't be too hard to explain.
