What's in Billy Boyd's Porridge?

Pipe Dream

Gondor
I've been trying to figure this out for a while now. This has always looked really really good to me and I've wanted to try it. I know he's probably pouring in cream, but what's in the bowl? It doesn't look like oats to me. I see raisins, bananas and perhaps apricots. Does anybody know what kind of grain that is? Or how to make it?

I know that on the first day of filming, Billy asked for porridge for breakfast, but they had none; word got around, and from then on it was available! I've been trying to locate the article which included that information, but can't find it.

Porridge is of course typically made from oats, but any grain will do, just cook it long enough to be chewy and a bit mushy! [laugh] Here's a recipe which has options for adding fruit, etc. to standard oatmeal porridge.

It reminded me of a cereal I used to love and has become very hard to find these days: Alpen.

It was rolled grains that were probably lightly toasted/roasted but, unlike granola, not rolled in liquid sugar (honey) and fat. Granola gets crunchy. Alpen wasn't. The sugar in it did not changed the texture of the grains. It looked like uncooked oatmeal but I suspect it was 'more' You didn't cook it, you just poured milk on it like any other cold cereal.

You can see more info on this page but the ingredient list is:
Organic Rolled Oats, Organic Whole Wheat, Raisins, Organic Pearled Barley, Brown Sugar, Roasted Hazelnuts, Skim Milk Powder, Sliced Almonds.
It seems to me the label I kept from one of my last boxes also had malt in it. I know when I tried to duplicate it from scratch, I added a small amount of malt powder.

I'm not saying this is a bowl of Alpen. Only that it looks like it might be the Alpen-type grain processing rather than the granola type grain processing.

But it's hard to tell and it might be something else entirely.

For what it's worth, I think I see a sunflower seed!

I think you figured it out Magpie! -edit- (and Starling) Thanks! Did a quick check and found out that's what Museli is. I've heard of that type of cereral before, but I never really knew what it was. (Not to be confused with Mueslix, which is also type of muesli. (barley, oats, and wheat rolled together) I'll have to check my cereral isle to see what's available. Thanks all for the help! I might have to try Kangi Ska's baked oats too (granola). I wasn't aware that came loose in a cereral box. (sans the "bar") Cool! This has really been bugging me for a LONG time, and I thought DUH! , why not ask at TORN. [:)]

Are you supposed to let it soak in milk for a while prior to eating, or do you just chow down on it like any other breakfast cereral?

I never had heard of soaking it until I looked online just now. There are lots of different combinations you can try, and you can use other grains and nuts and seeds, as well as adding bits of fruit.

Is that it was in fact lightly toasted. I agree that the pic doesn't look like a cooked porridge but a mix of various cereal-type ingredients. If it is in fact cooked I'd suggest it was a mixture of oats with some other grain as well because there appears to be a significant texture difference. If you find the recipe, let me know, it's made me HON-gry! [unsure]
