What user name do you wish you’d thought of?

I wanted to be Gwindor; but for some reason, I felt sure the name was taken, and haven't figured out how to check - I settled down on another name from that tale.

I probably should have just tried; in the worst case, I would be informed the name was taken. I didn't think of that, either.

There is a member named Gwindor now; but that user has joined five years after me, and hasn't posted once.

At 'Who's Online' you can check the Membership Directory which reveals that there is indeed a Gwindor (but not a 'gwindor'). However, that member has never posted and has not logged back in since the day of registration: Mar 10 2012. So you had a window of about 4 1/2 years when that username was available! [angelic]

...Corona's Coming Attractions website. I don't know if anybody else around here used to frequent those boards or not. It was a movie news website, which gave detailed updates on films in various stages of development.

They had forums divided into different subgroups, and I spent a lot of time on their Lord of the Rings board. It was basically TORN for me before I discovered TORN (sometime in 2002, I think).

Anyway, I had desired to use the very simple username of Strider, but there was already a member there who used it (and the promotional image of Viggo similar to the art that I use as my avatar here). So I pondered different variations of Aragorn's names and titles, until I settled on Aragorn the Elfstone, and used as my avatar the promotional image of Aragorn holding his sword up at Helm's Deep.

Over the years, I've grown quite attached to my eventual choice and even use it on other boards not affiliated with Tolkien (except on AwardsWatch, where I'm Elessar).

and the whole User Name was new for me. I wanted something Tolkien, but there aren't a lot of female names. Eowyn, Galadriel, and Arwen were taken. I loved the Ents and wanted Fimbrethil, but that was taken too. So I chose entmaiden and kept it when we switched to the new boards (that was 11 years ago, and the boards aren't new anymore).
I have other names for other message boards I visit, but for this board, entmaiden is me. [:)]

...it HAS been 11 years, hasn't it? [crazy] [cool]

It really doesn't seem like it. I suppose the fact that "newboards" is still in the web address has kept me feeling like it wasn't as long ago as it has actually been.

Of course, I wasn't a member back on the old boards (joined in '09), but I was a longtime lurker.

It's rather amazing how long you guys have been part of my life. It's just now occurring to me that next year will be my 10th anniversary as a member! [:)]

especially ones with a pun, such as Haldir in Headlights. But I've been happy with my choice of nick.

Like Entmaiden, this was my first discussion board (actually it was the first website that I registered for anything and I had no idea what personal information I was making accessible by clicking 'register'!) As it happens, I've since used Ataahua on a variety of other websites - it's become my standard 'other' identity. :)

I rather liked the idea of a username that could be easily recognized across multiple message boards, so Otaku-sempai in some form has followed me from forum to forum.

I've actually searched the boards, and found out that I've earlier remembered the story in a different way.

I did once ask the admins how to change my username (I can't find that post), but I was advised to keep the existing one, as I was already known by it, and it would be problematic to search older posts and associate them with me (some members did change their usernames when TORn moved from the old boards to the new ones, but I wasn't around by then). So here I am.

I think I was starting LOTR for the umpteenth time, and reading Bilbo’s farewell speech.

But our nicks do grow on us do they not?

There are SO many clever names on TORn. noWizardme and L. Ron Halfelven spring to mind, and of course grammaboodawg – quite crafty!

Playing with names:

Bo Romear
Perry Grin
Harry Gorn
Dís n Dat
Denny Thor
Beth Akalla
Ollie Fant
Brock Badger
Bungo Straight

I deliberated for a while over mine. I chose Eledhwen because Túrin is my favourite Silmarillion tale, but 'Morwen' didn't seem to fit. Apart from the fact it's a bit tricky to pronounce IRL (the 'dh' being 'th') I like it a lot. I was incredibly miffed when I joined LiveJournal and someone else had pinched Eledhwen before me, but it's my pen-name for all the fanfic I've ever written online and it's my username on a couple of other websites too. I can't imagine being anything else now.

Although not my first time being a member of a large community where almost everyone was known by a nickname.

When I joined TORN, I first tried for some of the more common and uncommon names of Gandalf and Aragorn, all long taken by December 2003, before this one occurred to me.
