Accoding to middle earth news , WB has closed their office in New Zealand , which apparently has existed since 1947...

Some are saying its a slap on the face of the party that changed labour laws in order to accomodate WB ...

Thats what felt so strange...nz is emearging as pj put it , a really good place to make movies, and Avatar special effects were done there.....it feels weird...

In the year of the hobbit? Weird..but then again, im no executive

Probably its money issues...but its just that they already got the tax cuts....

to be nearer the Action.
Also with the speed of Video Conferencing they could be in California
and still be in contact with any of their projects anywhere in
in our rapidly shrinking World.

THATS my take on this move.

Change to wellington? Maybe, but i didnt read that..i got the impression they left NZ...not relocated the office to wellywood..

The linked site re-wrote a longer article by tv.co.nz here. The source article indicates it's a distribution office and, later, implies it's Warner Video, which is only for distribution of video (movies and games) as the Warner home site says here. The Warner site also implies outsourcing is common via "global supply chain infrastructure, retailer relationships and category management expertise.

Given all that, WB handing over distribution of home video/games to a local NZ company seems like a non-event. It seems to have nothing to do with production or film-making.

That said, I'll see if we can get some clarification.

As someone who occasionally posts stories on the Home Page, I've learned it's sometimes helps clarify things, or provides more information, by finding the source article and reading it too (not to mention being good etiquette to refer to it in your own recap - as the site you linked to did).

they're clearing their desks and calendars for some more serious business ;) It'd be interesting to see if they're doing it in other locations. Online video rentals/usage is killing the physical purchase/renting businesses.

Yeah, I'll bet they're re-organizing their mission in NZ... like my office is over the summer. We're still here, just going to be doing different things.

I hope it's just a matter of turning its distribution process over to a local New Zealand. I would like to think WB feels it has a close relationship to the country at this point. I think when all is said and done, 5 of their biggest, maybe the 5 biggest movies in their library will be tied to NZ. I have to believe that relationship will lead to other movie deals to be filmed out of Wellington and maybe some more exhibition and tourism opportunities related to the LotR/Hobbit movies over the coming years.
