Happened to catch a nice article discussing what franchises worked and didn't work (Top 5 for each). At #1 of the successful franchises was "Lord Of The Rings", which I'm sure many on this board would agree with. Just a fun and interesting article.

I agree not only with the assessment and ranking of the LOTR films, but with the rest of the rankings and choices as well. Thanks for sharing!
 
...there appears to be no structured criteria behind it. I must reject it, regardless of whether I agree or disagree.
 
Essentially, the reasons for failed franchises seems to have a common thread. The creators lost sight of their characters. I've always been of the opinion that failed sequels (to include HBII) is because they try to exploit what they perceived as being the "popular" pieces of the successful films and exploit them... contort them... and throw in a lot of extraneous fx/action. They make the sequels too cutsy. Another example is Bill & Ted's Bogus Adventure. omg... so sad. Mummy III is another/ and Speed II.

Sequels CAN be as bodacious as the originals. Mummy II is a great example of the sequel equalling or topping the original. Bourne Identity is another (but hold the camera still, please); National Treasure; Jurassic Park; Ocean's 11/12/13 are all examples of the sequels surviving because of continuity of the vision of the characters, their motivations, and plotlines/rhythm of the stories.

Sometimes the sequels exceed the originals. Blade Trinity is a great example. It's much better than it's predecessors, again... imho. As are the Start Trek films. Not all, but most of them got better and better.

I think the authors of the article hit their interpretations of why franchises succeed or fail spot on. Especially because they agree with me :D

Really really stupid. there is no way that Daniel Craig Bond is more successful than Harry Potter. It`s 5 movies vs 2 in HP corner and DC Bond also didn`t get better reviews. Batman is also debatable. The Dark Knight may be huge success in North America but HP obliterates it internationally and, again, it`s 5 movies vs 2. Also, I wouldn`t call Pirates of the Caribbean a failure. critics may have hated the sequels but there are still many fans wishing for POTC 4 and DMC crossed $1 billion which only 2 other movies managed (while TDK`s $1 billion before re-release is at stake at this point). Also, unlike HP, LOTR, Spiderman, Bond, POTC did not have globally woprshipped source material. It was based on a Disney Ride that majority of world population is unfamiliar with. So, all said and done, POTC is actually the biggest achievement considering odds against it and it also introduced an iconic character Jack Sparrow. So failure my @#$%^^!

Oh, and the most successful franchise will be Twilight. First movie is made for $37 mio but midnight screenings went over $7 mio, opening day is looking to be in the range of $30 mio or more, it`s 3d fastest-selling tickets of all times (behind SW:ROTSand and TDK) and so many people report that craze in cinemas yestaerday is something never seen ebfore. This will obliterate everyhting because it`s so cheap but will have returns just like above mentioned expensive blockbusters.

There is no common criteria given for comparison of each one against another to justify the ranking. It's strictly subjective. A well researched piece would identify these criteria, explain how they were ranked, list them for each of the candidates, and reserve the more subjective arguments for supporting or qualifying less tangible factors involved. Otherwise it's just two peoples opinion of no more worth than any other two.

Speaking of two, this is twice I've said more or less the same thing on one thread. I'll try to restrain myself from further comment unless I can come up with something original. ;)
 
...as the inclusion of the Craig-as-Bond films suggests, then I nominate Yojimbo and Sanjuro. And I'm surprised, given what the style of Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace owes to the Bourne films, to find that franchise omitted.
