Unexpected dragon dream sequence?

Is it possible that the dragon they showed in the trailer was not in fact Smaug? I know this is far fetched but could it be that Bilbo has a dream sequence in eerie anticipation early on in the film of meeting Smaug and imagines a situation in which the dragon we saw in the trailer is shown? Personally this would be too good to be true because I was not very impressed with the way he looked and hated being spoiled of his design before seeing him on the big screen.

It would also explain why the dragon shown does not match up with the teases of Smaug in AUJ. Plus it would be a very tricksy and clever way for an even grander reveal of a much more impressive Smaug in the actual film.

I know this is very far fetched and there is possibly 1% chance it rings true, but what does everyone think?
 
He's wearing the exact same clothes that we have seen him in every publicity still, other shots in the trailer, and the movie poster. No doubt he will acquire these clothes in Laketown just as the dwarves are seen wearing different clothes outside secret entrance. They'd have to be cooking up a very elaborate scheme to have all these match up.

I would approve of this entire trilogy being a long dream sequence. [;)] Bilbo will wake up in Bag End and say "We'll I'm glad none of that actually happened."

As for why they actually showed the dragon and ruined it for a lot of people? Probably pressure from the studio or lack of common sense (e.g. showing Gandalf in the Two Towers trailer).

but thank you for resting my mind and letting me confront the truth! And yes I agree, the showing of Smaug was very reminiscent of showing Gandalf.
 
At the end of the trilogy, they have Elijah Wood and Ian Holm again.

"Bilbo, this story sounds ridiculous. All of this happened the way you described it?"
"Well, I may have embellished a little."

Hopefully the trilogy can be somewhat saved due to an unreliable narrator.
 
Last lines should be:

Frodo: I do believe you made a lot of that up.

Bilbo: Well, yes. All good stories deserve a little embellishment. ;)

Agreed, it could help continuity with the LotR films at the very least. Bilbo is rather erratic during the time frame of the OT anyway.
 
I actually wondered about this possibility. If the Smaug hide-and-seek is a dream sequence it would explain why the dragon looks a bit different than before, and why Bilbo doesn't seem to be wearing his ring. But, I'm probably dreaming too.[:)]
