Transportation to and from Airports for RCMH event

I looked online some and felt immediately confused. So I thought I'd ask for help in figuring out options for getting to and from the airports to NYC.

And, I think a couple of people have wondered if any of us were arriving and/or departing at similar times for sharing rides or transit experience.

So, to start with, my hub and I are arriving at JFK and departing at LaGuardia.

Is it unreasonable to try to take public transportation to and from either of these airports? We will probably have carry on bags and at least one, if not two full sized pieces of luggage. (and I just found a site that said: "The New York City subways and buses run to JFK for $2.00. If you have large quantities of luggage, you may find it difficult to manage this long trip."

If public transportation is too onerous a procedure to attempt, other suggestions? Is there anything I should be mindful of when using any of these options?

I am finding these sites but would love some opinions from people in the know.
I'm sure there are more but I have to start running my errands.

I'll post a reply that gives my arrival and departure times so we can maybe get some individual threads going for people looking for transit buddies.
 
If you are arriving JFK around 6:30 on Thursday and would like to explore buddying up for transportation, post a reply.

If you are departing LGA around 3:00 on Sunday, do the same. Although I am not deciding definitely, my current plans are not to try to attend the panels. So I will likely be leaving from the hotel or nearby.
 
We are arriving into JFK around 4pm on Thursday afternoon, so it looks like we'll not be able to hook up with you. I plan on just taking a Taxi. If you have the address of where you are going, they have taxi stands with a guy in a kiosk, you give him your destination, he gives you the rate as a printout and then you take it to the line and hand it to the driver when it's your turn to go. This way, you don't get the 'let's take a short cut' that doubles your time and money spent, they can't charge anything over what that rate card says.

At least, that's how they do it at EWR, and I don't expect it to be any different at JFK.


The return trip might be a little different, since we'll most likely be hailing a taxi on the street.


The other option is going with Supershuttle or Prime Ticket or some other established shuttle company, but then you end up with intermediate stops along the way.
 
Looks like there is a flat rate from JFK into NYC o $45, which is for the car, not per person. So, up to 3 or 4 passengers, can't recall which now, can share the ride. Not bad, but not awesome either.
 
the bus rides are like $2.50 and if you transfer to something else (subway) within something like 20 minutes it counts as the same ride. they guy i'm staying with has a bunch of advice for me, i just posed this question to him. i'll post what he says.
 
From JFK, there's a number of options. The "Air Train" is a monorail that will take them out to the subway (A line, I believe) which will take them straight into midtown. (actually, "Straight" is slightly misleading--it's a local train, so it hits EVERY stop, and takes more than an hour. But it may still be quicker than a taxi. DEFINITELY cheaper.

Taxi is around $45 from JFK to Grand Central.

keep your luggage with you at all times, and always be aware of the people around you. There are thieves who concentrate on the airports in New York because they know there are a lot of first-time visitors who will be distracted by handling the luggage, finding the subway, etc. You will most likely be fine, but just raise your awareness a notch or two.

The same is true for anyone who takes a shuttle or a taxi. The risk that someone will grab your stuff is reduced, but it's still there.
 
I'm planning on taking the subway from/to JFK, via the E line. There is some sort of shuttle service that goes from the airport north to the E line. I was told that at the time of day I'll be using it (Friday 3pm-ish and Sunday 2pm-ish) it is a definite cheaper way to go, and possibly faster than a taxi.

Garfeimao mentioned something about using the subway, but mentioned the A line which seems out of the way, at least on the transit map: http://www.mta.info/nyct/maps/submap.htm so I'm going north for the E line. :) But I'm no expert.

Not sure about LaGuardia. Seems that with the luggage you might have, a taxi would be more convenient though.

I'll post my times here too, in case there are people arriving at the same time as I am to share a taxi, although, if other's flights are not very close to mine, I'm going to opt for the subway as opposed to waiting around for other flights that may be delayed, etc...

As Magpie posted above, if you have similar flights, let me know. As of now, I'm planning on taking the subway, but am open to something else if there are others with similar flights.
 
but, did anyone call the hotel to see if they offer shuttle service? When i lived in houston most of the big hotels had a shuttle service to/from the hotel
 
BG and I are flying in and out of Newark, NJ.

The last time we did this we took the Liberty Airport Express bus which is only $15 one way and $25 round trip. It's a nice, big, tour-type bus and the driver will put your luggage under the bus for you. It stops at the Port Authority bus station in mid-town and from there, I'd advise catching a taxi to the Park Central hotel (56th & 7th) as it would be a long walk with luggage. You can buy your tickets online so you don't have to mess with finding kiosks, etc. at the airport.

I've also taken the train from Newark airport to Penn Station in Manhattan. There's a ticket machine in the airport. You catch the Airtrain from the airport to the Amtrak train at Newark's Penn Station which takes you to Manhattan's Penn Station. It's aslo about $15 each way. Again, taxi it to the hotel as it's much too far to walk.

but if you can get 4 people, it might save money. It's about the same price as a taxi, which can also be shared.
 
A friend is meeting me at JFK on Thursday and we're taking the subway to the hotel, if anyone would like to join us. She's local and I'm sure she wouldn't mind helping others get to the host hotel too. I only have one carry-on, so I am still debating Monday morning taxi or subway. If anyone else is leaving JFK at the same time, I would love to share a cab. Otherwise, I may beg the same friend to help me figure out the subway back to JFK.

It can take you to LIRR (train) direct to Penn Station. Take AirTran to the Jamaica Station Route... you can also pick up the E train there, yes, but I'd avoid the subway if you have a lot of luggage
