Well, what do you know? It's Friday once again and time for our weekly quaff and conversation!

That perfect time of the year is finally here for B.G. and I. We'll settle in for a game of NZ rugby in the wee hours tonight (or watch the replay in the a.m.), and an American football preseason game will air on Sunday. The Broncos have not one, not two, but three new and talented quarterbacks - one fresh out of college ball as our lead, and two vying for the backup spot. Ahhh, see, perfect!

How about you/ What entertainment have you been engaging in, or are looking forward to? Settle in to a comfy chair inside, or a deck chair by the pool outside, and let us know!

I still have bunches of things I want to get done "this summer", but I'm just not disciplined enough ;) My weekend will be hitting some yardsales, watching my Woodstock extended ed to honour the 55th anniversary of that awesome concert, and transplanting some daisies to fill in the gaps of my large, spontaneous plot in the middle of the yard. I could park my hobbity SUV 3 times side-by-side and still not cover all the flowers! They really wake up in the early summer, fade away, and rejuvenate themselves to one last fling sometime in September. So I'm grabbing little patches of them showing up all over the yard and filling in the bald spots and edges of the large plot. They're just getting ready to shoot up stems from the cluster of leaves on the ground.

Other than that, I'm enjoying a few quiet days before the week starts up again :D

A few quiet days? I haven't heard that from you in ages. Nice that things are settling down to a dull roar at least.

The Woodstock extended edition? Wow, I bet that brings back some memories. A lot of that music is timeless though. I'm always surprised going into restaurants in all parts of the world only to find American and British rock playing for their customers - in English - much of which is from the late 20th century. Is your edition a soundtrack or a video? In either case, enjoy!! [heart]
 
Enjoy the rugby and football game! Seems crazy it's already football season again - I feel like the Super Bowl just happened.

I ended up having one of those horrid weeks at work you can sort of feel coming from a mile away, where every bad thing seems to happen unendingly.

Anyway, putting that behind me and trying to have a relaxing weekend. [crazy]

We're going to a local theatre showcase in the area tomorrow night, which should be fun. We're looking to get out of the house later tonight but aren't sure what to do - hopefully inspiration will strike before it's too late!

It's supposed to warm up again here in the coming days, and I think this means our "true" summer is settling in for the next 90 or so days. I bought some loose-fitting corduroy pants to see how they'd feel in the hot weather, and I was happily impressed - knowing me, I'll go overboard and buy 3 more pairs now that I know I like them. [angelic]

Sorry to hear about your bad work week. [pirate] Those are the worst. Happily, it sounds like you have just the attitude and the plans to forget about it, at least for a few days.

Is the theater showcase bits of plays they're currently putting on, or more visuals of coming attractions? Sounds like fun. Enjoy!!
 
What a happy yard you have! But you've had a busy enough summer with caring for your daughter, and - caring for a new kitty, has he fully settled in? (Other than being quarantined.)

Hard to believe Woodstock was that long ago! Get out your beads and hippie clothes! I suppose Hobbity foods would be appropriate?

90 days of summer - yeah, that's SoCal! Yes, lightweight corduroy can be very comfortable, don't be concerned about getting more! So what's playing at the showcase now?
 
Here with hubby's sibs and spouses, this is the weekend we fully clean out their parents' house. Yesterday we left no drawer unopened and cleared out, no closet unemptied (a sister will take Mom's clothes to Goodwill later). We're filling a dumpster with everything that can't go to Habitat or Goodwill, except for a few items we put out at the curb with a "FREE" sign - and those all got picked up within a couple hours!

And we've all taken what we and the grandkids want. It's bittersweet, but necessary. Today we dump the mattresses and pack large items into the now-cleaned-out garage and do some window-cleaning. The real estate agent says he already has a client who wants to take a look: gotta make the house as presentable as possible.

We're planning to meet at a sister's house in November to have a "party" and have fun going through all their Christmas ornaments!

Rugby is quite a sport, so good to see it at the Olympics! And what a team the Broncos put together. Enjoy the games, Altaira! And thank you, I'll just grab a coffee to go, gotta get out of the motel and back to the house now!
 
I was deep into a book editing project and totally forgot what day it was.

It feels like fall here - it's foggy and cool this morning - but we're zooming back up to 80F today after a stretch of 70s (70F = 22C, perfect) weather. That might be summer's last hurrah however; rain moves in tonight, and the forecast for the rest of the month is high 60s to low 70s and rain on about half the days. We need this because there are several wildfires threatening some of our mountain towns. I'm happy to see the return of sweater weather.

Currently engaged in a rewatch from the beginning of "The Umbrella Academy" prior to watching the new season 4. Going to make breakfast, go for a walk before it warms up, and then back to work. I'm on a deadline and this book has required a lot more editing than is usual for the projects I get from the publisher, so that's my weekend. A Mexican mocha will help . . .

I have the extended dvd and the cd collection. The only sad thing in it for me is that I was going to go to it with my soon-to-be hubby, but I was still 17 and Dad said no. *sigh*

I love it that you've heard that great era of music all over the world :D

It's been 2 weeks, and the vet said she should be safe to let loose. She's not dramatic at all and is very respectful of the others... so it's going better than expected. Though, I still put her in her kennel at night where she's less restless and feels safe :)
 
Especially if you have a guess on what's stirring everyone up. KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN! I hope it all settles fast!

I'm the same way in getting multiples (even if it's only 1 or 2) of things I really like. I used to figure I could go out lots later and get replacements/more, but can never find them again!

It seems like you've done this more than a few times in recent years. *sigh* I'm glad you were all able to do it together. I'm REALLY glad you were able to put things out for free and that they were taken so quickly. That's community :) It sounds like the weather held up for you!


I love the idea of gathering for enjoying the Christmas ornaments and celebrating all the memories. Hopefully the house will soon find a new family. When you're all finished, you'll need comfy clothes, a good book or movie, and some comfort food to munch on. :)
 
Hopefully part of the reason is because the content is enjoyable ;) I'm a huge sweater weather fan, so I like your plan of attack before going back to work :)

trying to take stuff written at doctoral level and translate it to high-school level reading.

Something I've noticed quite often with clinical psychologists: they want to be taken seriously as real, science-based doctors. So they tend to write with MDs in mind, using all the jargon and a very turgid style--even when they are writing for patients. The funny thing is that physicians are much better at writing simply for patients, probably because they are so used to explaining everything in simple terms. (I often have to tell docs "it's okay, I speak medicalese, you can use the big words.") So I'm doing a lot of suggesting that "um, I doubt that most of the people who'd be reading this work have a background in organic chemistry. And do they really need to know that a certain compound " . . . interacts with multiple neurotransmitter systems, including acting as an agonist at serotonin receptors and an antagonist at NMDA receptors. It also affects other targets, such as opioid receptors and acetylcholine receptors" ?

It took us several iterations to go through everything and distribute it. Getting through the hundred photo albums for one thing! (My older brother couldn't just glance at them, he had to sit down and walk memory lane with each.)

We held a final "free" event to clear out all of Dad's hoarded bits of this and that in his garage workshop. It was amazing what people will take if it's free! We even had an artist haul away all kinds of little scraps of metal for use in his sculptures. That made me really happy.

I love your idea of the Christmas ornament party. My mom collected Santas, and we had a fun time choosing which ones we'd take to add to our own (we all picked up the habit from her). I have the Scottish Santa in a kilt, which was my Dad's particular one.
 
All that was a distant dream, in my very sheltered childhood and youth! I do remember making necklaces out of melon pips dyed with food colouring, and walking round wearing a string of random beads with a bell on and a flower stuck behind my ear. That's as wild as it got where I was growing up!
A pool would be nice; the weather's just about warm enough for it here. My cousin in Switzerland has been dealing with temperatures in the low to mid 30s; normally when it's hot they'd swim in Lake Geneva, but at the moment it has duck fleas (very bitey apparently) and a nasty toxic-to-dogs algal bloom, so that's a no-no.
In a local garden centre I spotted the first rack of Christmas cards last week! augh... The local bargain emporium has an aisle of Hallowe'en merchandise, too. At least wait until the children are back in school, people... (first week in September) Have a good weekend, what's left of it, folks! Cheers!
 
At the end of today, our car was stuffed, and two other sibs left with overflowing trucks (a third sib's son will bring his trailer to pick up furniture in the garage), and the fourth sib and hubby were left, staying in the house to do a final cleanup (and see YoYo Ma at Tanglewood tomorrow). That pair and we got together for dinner, and we treated ourselves to dessert, figuring we'd earned it! [laugh]

Yes, the weather was perfect for this. [cool]

That house is filled with happy memories. We so want a young family to move in.

We'll leave the area tomorrow, after visiting an elderly aunt - the last of hubby's parents' generation. [heart]
 
do take so much time to go through! So one sister took several, and she's going to scan them for sharing. We'd already been given the rest, which we'll be organizing and scanning.

It would be fun to see what that artist was able to do with those odds and ends!

Santa in a kilt? Does he have a bagpipe instead of a sack? [laugh]
 
That is text that makes the layman's eyes cross! What a job that's been for you - and what a necessary job!

I'm glad for the rain in your area. Is the kitty-patio covered, so Charlie can go out in the moist weather?
