Its 6:30pm here in New South Wales, and people have surrounded Sydney Harbour early to get the best spots for the fire works. They usually have a great display that go off from the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, the hundreds of boats and basically anything thats above head level [cool] I decided to skip going to Sydney for all that ... I can see the glow of the fire works 100kms away from the mountains - (not very well - but ..) as long as tonight stays clear tonight, it should be great to watch ... and it has been a beautiful day, so crossed fingers!

Around our town, there are people dressed up and partying already ... the light wont fade for another couple of hours ...

So, just in case I am too pickled to get here at midnight ...

I'm greatly anticipating staying in a hotel right on Sydney Harbor in March, although I suppose they'll skip the fireworks for us [:)] I hope you got to see them and are now enjoying New Year's Day!

It's an odd feeling having my friends in Australia and NZ, and some family members who are in India right now, be in a different year than I'm in. I remember New Year's Eve 1999-2000, when everyone was hysterical over the Y2K computers-going-down possibility -- I got an e-mail from a friend near Perth, W. Australia, early in our evening telling us not to worry, the power was still on in Australia!

And then, in the part of Dallas where we were living at the time, a squirrel fried himself on a transformer just at midnight, so the power blinked after all. That was a fun moment [shocked]

I too, am wishing everyong a bright, prosperous, healthy and PEACEFUL 2008!
 
I have kept it quiet tonight ... but its now 3 hours into 2008 .... and the revellers are going to have some big hang-overs tomorrow. Think I might mow the lawns at about 8:30am ... [;)]

You're here in March!! I'll alert the media and get fireworks ... well sort of ... I can sms a friend and grab some sparklers maybe [angelic]

... but it sounds like a moot possibility maybe?

Sydney Harbour looks good everyday of the year. Hopefully you get a room where you can see the animals at Taronga Park Zoo across the Harbour at Mosman.

and the sun is burning down just like it should on a proper summer's day! Once I find the cookie cutters, I'm going to make gingerbread men. [:)]
 
But since they're associated with the holiday season, I can see why you would make them in your summer. I think they feel like winter because the whole idea of baking cookies is something I don't do often in the summer, and the dough is darker than the standard cookie.

What's a typical Christmas dinner in the Antipodes? Our dinners are very heavy, but it's cold outside right now (snowing actually) so it's easy to contemplate a heavier dinner full of mashed potatoes, gravy, roast beef, and winter vegetables. If I were in summer, I would think of Christmas dinner more like a nice picnic, with cold fried chicken, potato salad and lemonade.
 
I've just put on a slow crockpot of black-eyed peas and fatback. Eat black-eyed peas, collard greens, and cornbread on New Year's Day and you'll have good luck all year. And I need it. (Course, come to think on it, I ate the same New Year's meal the past coupla years...)
 
but for my birthday I receive joke cookie cutters (one with an arm 'bitten' off, one with a leg bitten of, and one without its head), so I want to make the men for the friend who gave me the gift.

I've had a full-on Christmas meal once, when I worked the night shift at my former workplace, and it was nice to have it during the cooler hours of the day. But my standard Christmas lunch is a mix of cold meats, potatoes and salads, and we go all-out on the desert. Anything heavier and we'd sleep for the rest of the day. ;) But I'd like to experience a winter Christmas sometime, with an all-the-trimmings Christmas lunch, just to know what it's like.
 
There are usually fireworks somewhere close by, and I'll go outside and watch - but I'm staying home tonight with a few scotches, chocolate, the computer, a sketch pad and a table full of patchwork pieces! (Not necessarily in that order...) Playing with all my festive fabrics and thinking of what I can make, while I'm in the mood. No point waiting until November because that'll be too late.

Of course, Hopping John without fatback (or bacon) to season the 'peas is sort of bland, I agree. I always add a can of Rotel tomatoes to mine (anathema, I know, I know!!)

The day is more than half over here! Sunny and not *too* hot. We had breakfast outdoors, with the sparkling wine we didn't manage to finish last night. A good start to the year.
 
So I'll get my dose of good luck then. My family's tradition is corned beef and sauerkraut, but I can't abide the smell of sauerkraut so I'm taking a risk and not making it. But I'm mitigating that risk with the Hoppin' John (although it's being made by a northerner, so maybe that negates any good luck!).
