Just a curious thought ...

How many of us here today, geeking around the hobbit, was here doing the same the years before lotr had its premier?

I myself am 38 and did do so. [laugh]
 
I have only joined today but i have i have been on this site lurking as you might say for years.

I was 14 at the time the first one came out, im 24 now and am just as in love with the world of middle earth as i was back then, but now i have a greater appreciation of it from further reading and some re-readings.

Weird to think something can hold your attention or be in ones mind milling around for so many years.
 
My Gran had done some nursing in NZ in her Youth. She heard they filmed LOTR there. She's also a fan of the book. Thus, we watched the films. I loved them.

I was 11 at the time the first film came out, I remember the whole LOTR v Harry Potter thing at school

So, the answer to was I geeking out 10 years ago is no. I wasn't aware of it. I was a fan of the potter books before the films came out. But wasn't really geeking out over them

I think I'll go see The hobbit with my gran. For tradition's sakes (seeing all the other films with her)

I read The Hobbit as a kid but wasn't aware of LOTR until just before FOTR arrived in theaters. I didn't become aware of TORn or lurk any other fansites until Trilogy Tuesday was announced, some time between TTT and ROTK.
 
I am new at TORN but when the FOTR came out I was 16 and Tolkien and his works were a huge matter of conversation at school.
 
...I first read LotR as a child in the 60s. It was my favorite book then, and it's still my favorite book. No, a book like that never leaves you.

I greatly disliked the Bakshi LotR of the 70s, so when I heard someone in New Zealand was making live-action movies I was very skeptical. I didn't pay any attention until soon before FotR's release, when I started seeing publicity photos and trailers and realized this guy Jackson was onto something!

I started lurking on TORn soon after FotR, so missed a lot of the early speculation.

I've always preferred LotR to The Hobbit, but I've really enjoyed participating in the early rumors and discussions this time around.
 
Both my husband and I read the books in the 70s and became instant fans. When we heard about PJ making the movies, we lurked here at TORn and followed all the news.

I'm a bit older than 38, so I geek a bit more quietly! But I am so anxious for the movie to come out!
 
too busy trying to finish the books (from Hobbit to Rotk) before the movie FOTR came out and was unaware of this site until I discovered it while searching for Hobbit news about 2 or 3 years or so ago. I lurked for quite awhile but I'm glad to be a part of all this fun
 
...but every time I saw something to do it, I felt something inside of me that knew in the future I would fall in love with this strange but amazingly deep world.

I didn't even get to see LOTR in the cinema!!!

But the fact that I had heard of it, and that everyone else was going crazy about it led me to think more about LOTR.
Then I was staying at my Aunties for a bit, and lo and behold a 1978 edition of LOTR lay on her bookshelf......and I was transformed! (lol this is turning into a life story!)
But I had to be separated from it and I had only got as far as The Old Forest!!!....
Until, when in Poland, my Grandad fetched it out of their basement for me the 1983 edition, and I red it in what must have been 3 weeks. The best three weeks of my life I think.

So.....my first watching of LOTR was on a tiny tv screen on DVD 2 years later in 2007 when I was 14!!!.....but by Eru was I blown to pieces by it!!

My first exposure to the name JRR Tolkien & Middle-earth was the FIRST Hobbit cartoon on NBC in the Spring of 1977.
Not to date myself. [blush]

I was immediately hooked...

What perfect timing though ~ withing two months, I was done reading both The Hobbit & TLOR for the first time...

And in a movie theatre watching Alec Guinness play Gandalf, er, Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars too. [;)]

...And a few months later, The Silmarillion was published. [cool]
 
Wow I can't believe it. I am in the same boat. Saw the FOTR in theaters but wasn't hooked until Two Towers. I've been lurking here since then, but didn't join until a few months ago!

I did read them as a kid, but it went way over my head until the films reeled me back in.
 
Found TORN around the same time and have been a frequent lurker ever since. Only joined in the discussions couple of years ago.
 
and made my first post in the spring of 2000. Before that, though I knew some people who had read the books, I didn't know anyone else who loved them as much as I did. I discovered the fellowship of fans here, and here I've been ever since. [cool]
 
But I was very young - in fact, I'm a bit surprised in retrospect that I was allowed to stay up and watch it. I didn't remember much of it except being scared of Gollum, but I think my vague memories of that (and the RB LOTR) are part of what made me pick up the books in my teens.
 
I dont believe I even heard of Lord of the Rings before i saw the trailer during a date just before the Fellowship came out.
Was more impressed with the visuals at the time, but read up on it and then looked foward to how it would be adapted on the screen. Been a fan since then.
 
I heard about LotR being filmed July 2001 and found TORn early January 2002. Before that, I knew of a couple of people who had read the books (LotR/Hobbit), but I've been rather gaagaa over LotR especially since 1971. I've read it about once a year ever since.

When I hear they were making it into a movie (again), I was very anxious and territorial... "They'd better do it right or don't do it at all!" Well... I've been a very happy fangammer ever since :)
