The Hobbit & LOTR fest...when and why not?

I really hope that after The Hobbit, that us LOTR fans will be graced with a LOTR celebration much like Star Wars celebration and fan days etc..

A Hobbit & LOTR convention would be the greatest thing! It could tour the USA and the world. There is enough stewing in the LOTR pot. We have artists, actors galore, authors, animators, crew, lord of the rings merch, etc....

Has anybody heard of a LOTR fest brewing? A not a little fest but a big one like Star Wars Celebration and fan days
 
Several years ago, right as the LOTR movie hype was at its peak, there were two conventions: ORC on the West US coast and ENT on the Eastern US coast. But as the hype began to slow the conventions became less popular (and, I assume, less profitable). I've no idea if there will be conventions after TH is released.
 
In Europe, Bonn Germany to be precise, there still is RingCon. Although now they also have other fandoms (Harry Potter, Twilight and True Blood, and maybe even others). But the main part is still Lord of the Rings. Daniel Falconer from Weta will be coming this year!

I got to meet Ted Nasmith, Bruce Hopkins, Quickbeam, and we watched Craig Parker (Haldir) and Mark Ferguson (Gil-galad) reading/performing Riddles in the Dark.

Parker would be a fantastic Bilbo, imho! He was an incredible Gollum in this reading :D We also got to see the RotK for the first time at midnight!! THEATRE FULL OF GEEKS! Un"reel"!!!
 
at DragonCon every fall in Atlanta and ComicCon in California in the summer. There's usually something going on somewhere in the States during the warm seasons :)
 
They were run by Creation Entertainment who used TORn as a partner and the cost of these events was, to me, shocking. Not-for-profit TORn with all-about-profit Creation was an odd mix.

Maybe TORn should try to put something together - with no money.
 
When it all picks up steam again, hopefully we'll get some stuff like this.
I would love to be able to go to a Con and meet some of these people since my fandom began well after the LOTR hype slowed.
 
The Gathering was repeated in 2006, and included tickets for the musical.

There was also "The Ring Goes Ever On" in Birmingham, UK in 2005, with Priscilla Tolkien as an unannounced special guest.

Both had attendance of about 750, I believe.

Mythcon is always smaller than that: 100-200, depending on the venue.
(Although the 2005 UK event was also Mythcon, being co-sponsored by the Mythopoeic Society.)
 
Anyone in TORN going to Festival in the SHire? Looks like amazing programming with lots of scholars and artists attending! like Tom Shippey, Pieter Collier, Colin Duriez and more!

I"m really psyched for it! Anyone here going?

when I posted eleven months ago, the festival was indeed scheduled for summer 2010, and indeed that's when it took place.

Old threads don't "bump" on TORN, so very few people will see these late comments.

But I'm not too worried - at my age, I find embarrassment doesn't last long. [cool] - and anyway; it never does any harm to mention Oxonmoot, and the Sarehole weekend.
