So you think you can dance?

the name of one of my favorite TV programs... so popular among its fans we commonly use the abbreviation: SYTYCD

But the R2s were cute. ;^)

So what is this show?

Either I'm not watching enough tv or it's not shown down here. [unsure]

The ad they showed just before the video: a guy's trying to get a date with the gal behind the bar at a beach, when this Watcher in the Water shows up out in the ocean and begins attacking someone! (The guy then splashes in to rescue him, using a beach umbrella end as a sword, and as he comes ashore says something about taking the rescued man to the hospital, and asks if she's still on for a date tonight, and she of course says "yes". Turns out the beast and the rescued man were two friends of his, going through the charade for him.)

I kept expecting an Elf and two strangely-dressed Men to join in the rescue...[laugh]!

(veering off topic from the original intention of the thread... but then, that's what we're all about here, isn't it?)

It's kind of like American Idol (and both had the same exec producer here in the US).

Young people of various dance persuasions try out and make the final group to compete for top title. They pair up and dance proscribed (drawn from a hat) dance styles choreographed by top choreographers. When their audience vote totals land them in the bottom numbers, they perform a short solo in an effort to 'save themselves'. The judges chose one from the bottom to cut. Later, the final cut is determined solely by the audience voting.

The passion and talent these kids exhibit is high and the choreography is very good... sometimes stunning and moving. Unfortunately, they don't release DVDs of the season or I'd buy them to watch certain routines over and over again.

They have a SYTYCD Australia. http://dance.ten.com.au/

I had a bunch of links to YouTube videos but they've all been removed.

Here's a few of my favorites:

okay.. must... go... to... work...

Which is saying a lot because that was a really, really, really good season. There were 6 people left and I didn't know who I wanted to win. Seeing Will dance was just... wow. He and Katee doing the Pas de deux (even with the slip up) was utterly lovely.

And Neil and Sabra! Love the table dance. One that springs to my mind that should be added is the one with Lacey and Kameron from season three -- the Mia Michaels contemporary number to "Dancing" by Elisa. Watching that one gives me chills. [crazy]

Disclaimer to anyone watching these clips: the tiny, blurry video does NOT do the show justice. It is ridiculously engrossing.

I don't want to wait for summer for my next installment!

I always thought it was amazing how much expression and personality they got out of R2 in the movies. What fun to see him and his sibbies all dancing :-)

of So You Think You Can Dance last year, hosted by someone Bathagwaite (sp?). The second series has just started in Oz so take a look through your TV listings. (I'm guessing SYTYCD is on the same channel as Rove, because Rove interviewed Bathagwaite a couple of shows ago.)

I love the show. Helped by my favourite winning last year. :)

was because I had to go to work!

More favorites:

Wade Robson's Ramalama Bang Bang

Mia Michael's The Dance

Mia Michael's The Bench

I'm hard pressed not to like pretty much anything Wade or Mia does and I loved the new face on the block last year, Sonya Tayeh, who did 'The Garden'.

I caught on that MTV was airing a group dance competition. I vacillated between being bored and annoyed by the judges but one group, Quest Crew, has a lot of familiar faces in it. Hok and Dominic (who both competed in SYTYCD) and a few more that tried out but didn't make the cut. These guys are pretty awesome and I could recommend skimming through all the episodes just to watch their performances. The finale is this week and it's down to Quest Crew and a woman's Hip Hop team, Beat Freaks. Beat Freaks has had some pretty good moments and have occassionally outdanced Quest Crew. But in the end, I think QC did the best. http://www.mtv.com/ontv/dyn/dance_crew/videos-full-episodes.jhtml

Additionally, I got this little crush on Mark Mark Kanemura (he's just so darn cute in an old auntie, cheek pinchable sort of way). I spent an evening watching videos of his and found a dance that he choreographed that's pretty darn good.

And Laitholiel is right.. these videos don't do it justice. These kids give 110% .. past injury and exhaustion and they are good.

We don't get that in the country. We get a feed through WIN and their programming is mostly rubbish so we seldom watch it [:(]

That'd be why I've never heard of it [blush]

Shame really as I've always loved dance.

don't remember it being shown on WIN, but then they show Rove at odd times too, so it might have been on but around 2am in the morning [unsure]

For instance, they did Celine Dion's "Ave Maria;" Celine doesn't really do anything for me, but seeing the girls in their white as fallen angels paired with the expressions on their faces made me cry a few big fat tears.

It really is hard not to like Mia or Wade's stuff and it's what I always remember even though I have the most fun watching the "jive" and "broadway" routines! Darn those sad contemporary numbers. Jive makes me want to dance so badly. Toes, fingers and other body parts start wiggling of their own accord when I watch people do jive or swing. [blush]
