So compared with the Mines of Moria How big are these locations supposed to be.

1. The Troll cave is just a lair for William, Bert and Tom. Relatively tiny.
2. The Kingdom Under the Mountain would be extensive, probably not as large as Moria but in the same neighborhood. I doubt that we would see much of it, though.
3. Goblin Town and the associated caves and tunnels would be largish, but it wouldn't feel so since it would be dark and crowded, with twisty, narrow tunnels.
The Wood-elf Kingdom would likely rival that of Lonely Mountain. We may get a better sense of its size when Bilbo is exploring during the Dwarves' captivity. Esgaroth is a largish town and is exposed on Long Lake.

I know his name means "to squeeze through a hole," but the hole can't be too small. I think the main halls and rooms of the Lonely Mountain will rival Moria for size. Moria was more extensive, though. It doesn't take several days to walk through the Lonely Mountain.
I agree that most of Goblin Town consists of small, cramped tunnels -- as I recall even the largest goblins could run in a crouch through the tunnels. Of course, hobbits and dwarves might not find them so cramped. But Gandalf may have to keep his head down. There is one central chamber, though, that held a crowd, if not a balrog or dragon.

...to include The Lonely Mountain, which should be enormous. Laketown and Mirkwood will be fairly extensive. The goblin tunnels should be fairly claustrophobic, but other than that, we're in for more epic-scale halls and kingdoms. If they bother showing Dale, it probably won't be as large. If you want an idea, Alan Lee and John Howe have done many artworks for locales and areas in The Hobbit, and you can bet your butt that PJ will want to work with some of that.

I always thought of Dale as being larger than lake town...it rated a king & I think was the capital of the region. The whole area had been more prosperous before the dragon & even Laketown had been bigger. But both will be smaller than Minas Tirith and, I would think, Edoras.
Similarly, the main chamber under the mountain will be very large - but not as big as PJ did the Moria chamber; I can't see anything in the Hobbit out sizing places in the LOTR - or watching the movies in chronological order will lead to anti-climaxes. The approach should be different anyhow - do to the dim light, the dimensions of the chamber are only dimly guessable, so PJ does not need to try to impress us with its size. I think that PJ will try to avoid comparisons anyhow, since making the movies competitors is not to his benefit.
The troll cave would have been small (for trolls) as it was just a modest place for them to sleep during the day and stash their stuff.
Agree with others - goblin caves mostly small windy tunnels, with a few slightly larger tunnels (like where the dwarves and their ponies were brought in) and a "big cavern". Lots and lots of tangled passages though, very extensive. The goblins were unlikely to make anything bigger than they had to do or waste time on non-functional decoration, so it will have a look unlike any other underground place we see.
