Connery picks retirement over 'Indy 4'

There are some official casting announcements for the fourth Indiana Jones, but the biggest news is who will NOT be in the movie.

Sean Connery says he has decided to pass on reprising his role as the archaeologist adventurer's antiquities-obsessed father, a role he played only once, in 1989's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

The 76-year-old Scottish star, best known for launching the James Bond franchise, says he decided to retire in 2005 and he's sticking to it.

"I get asked the question so often, I thought it best to make an announcement. I thought long and hard about it, and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement, it would have been an Indiana Jones film," Connery said in a statement Thursday.

The actor praised director Steven Spielberg and producer George Lucas and said it was an "honor" to have star Harrison Ford play his son: "But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun."

He said he did have one last piece of advice for "Junior": "Demand that the critters be digital, the cliffs be low, and for goodness sake keep that whip by your side at all times in case you need to escape from the stunt coordinator!"

Unless the actor changes his mind, his retirement would make the 2003 critical and commercial bomb The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen his final feature film.

Shooting on Indiana Jones begins this summer, and the release is planned for May 22.

LucasFilm confirmed the long-running rumors that three actors will be joining the cast — Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone and John Hurt — though no word was given about who they will play. The plot of the movie has become one of Hollywood's best-kept secrets, though it is widely believed to take place during the Cold War era.

Well, at least Karen Allen will be back as Indy's ex-lover and mother to his spawn.

as if, after seeing Ian McKellan one needed another reason...

He would be retired, and not available for a Gandalf reprise in "The Hobbit" after New Line "settles our dispute".
 
I figured that if he were going to be in it, he would have been announced by now, but it would be nice to see him again.
 
made their age and their reputation work for them in Unforgiven and The Shootist. Done right, the next Indiana Jones movie could be a great coda to the series. And since Spielberg is connected to it, I have to believe they have a great script in hand. (Lucas I'm not so sure about, but Spielberg still seems to care about doing great work.)
 
He may not always look young, but neither does Sean Bean... but that doesn't mean he doesn't float my boat when he's looking his best!

*sigh*

Besides, I think that's why they brought in the younger cast to do what the older crowd can't... it's nice to have mixture of both older and younger... I'm hoping John Rhys-Davies makes it in there as well, but what I'm really looking forward to is seeing Cate as a villain. She rocks!
 
when he played Ford's dad. The key is to acknowledge Ford's age, and write it into the script. He can't be jumping off cliffs and outrunning boulders all the time any more.

Another good example of dealing with aging stars that comes to mind, besides the ones I cited elsewhere in this thread, was Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, which I consider the best of the Star Trek movies. Kirk's age was a running joke, and he no longer engaged in hand-to-hand combat as much as in the TV series, nor did he have as many love interests, but he did use his experience and wits in a familiar way, reading glasses or no reading glasses.
