OK, well, I'm joining the multi screen-cappers today, mainly because it gets the point across better. I promise I'm not usually party to such rule-breaking!

So, we have, Aragorn arriving at Helm's Deep. Everyone is under the impression that he was lost after the Warg battle. Legolas is clearly overjoyed to see him, as of course, is Eowyn. Legolas hands Aragorn the Evenstar, which he recovered from the battle. Upon seeing this exchange, Eowyn's reaction changes completely....


1. Movie firsters, how did you feel about Aragorn's return? Were you relieved, or did you expect it? And, for book firsters, how did you react to the whole scenario?
As a book firster, I must admit I was a little confused when I first saw Aragorn go over the edge, but I could totally see why they did it. They had added the Warg battle to emphasise the danger of their journey to Helm's Deep, and it would be a little unbelieveable if all your heroes came out of it unscathed. So, I was on board with it. And it was well scripted, so I enjoyed watching.

2. What, if anything, did this scene show you of the relationship between Aragorn and Legolas?
Legolas looks to Aragorn as his leader. I think he was pretty shell shocked after the fall of Gandalf in Moria, and then losing Boromir at Amon Hen, so the apparant departure of Aragorn must have hit him pretty hard. The love and comradary between the two is obvious when Aragorn returns. Legolas is beaming with relief, but can still crack a joke with his friend!

3. After her initial joy, Eowyn is clearly disappointed when she sees Aragorn's face as Legolas hands him the Evenstar. How do you think she feels at this moment? And do you feel anything for her?
Well, you've gotta feel bad for her! She's thrilled to see that Aragorn is still alive, and wants to rush over to greet him, but at that moment, Legolas hands over the Evenstar, and I think she is hit with the reality of her situation. She is in love with a Man who is in love with someone else! And not just anyone else either... I think Eowyn must feel a little inadequate at this moment. His heart belongs to Arwen. And who can compete with that?!

4. Any other thoughts/comments?
This surely must have lifted everyone's spirits a little. Many men were lost after the Warg battle, but I think the loss of Aragorn shocked them the most. To lose your leader at a time like that must be pretty crushing, especially with the impending battle looming. So his return brought a little good news to Helm's Deep, before he himself delivers a stunning blow. 10,000 Orcs?!
 
You've joined the likes of me and weaver! Ha ha ha! Anyways, down to the questions.

1.) As a book-firster, I really thought this moment was played out well. It was bittersweet.

2.) I think this is the first moment when Aragorn and Legolas are really identified as more than just comrads. They're friends that look out for each other. Legolas knew that the Evenstar was important, and, being a true friend, held it for safe-keeping.

3.) She knew that the Evenstar was a gift from someone else, a remaining piece of his relationship. It's a moment where she is about to make her move, likely to tell him how she feels, but when she sees the Evenstar, it is as though Arwen steps in her way. It's sad that fate won't allow her to be with Aragorn, but in the end, nothing ever really happened, and Aragorn has always been in love with Arwen.

Welcome to Multicapland! Saves hours of decision-making, doesn't it, when you give in and post more than one?

And I agree with you, these three work great together!

I really liked the reaction of both Gimli and Legolas to Aragorn's return -- a nice balance.

It also endears me a bit more to the Elf to know that he was hanging onto that necklace. It's a heartfelt kind of thing to do, which could be read as him hoping Aragorn might return, or simply wanting to hang onto a memento of someone who was a close friend. I imagine that Legolas would have passed it on to Arwen at some point, if Aragorn had not returned, which means he was thinking of her as well. Shows us a nice, softer side of the action-figure elf archer.

I was never sure if Eowyn saw or noticed the necklace hand-off. To me, I think she's just honestly happy that Aragorn didn't die -- she's smitten here, if you ask me, and not noticing much of anything except the chance that she might get a prom date after all, so to speak. I like that she doesn't go up to him at this point, and that her reaction to his return is a private moment, unseen by him. Miranda Otto is great in this scene.

As a book firster and a half-purist (I can accept some changes, but not most. lol), I wasn't overly thrilled with Aragorn's detour. I can see the purpose behind it, though; as was stated, it's unprobable to think that, in such a large attack, all of the heroes would escape unharmed. So I can see the need for such a scene... but that doesn't really mean I was happy about it. [laugh]

2. What, if anything, did this scene show you of the relationship between Aragorn and Legolas?
To me, it's a scene of companions reuniting. You can tell they're both glad to see each other, but in true buddy fashion, tease about it. Though it *kinda* felt like a break of character (Aragorn and Legolas goofing off), it wasn't really all that bad.

I second the person who said that you can't *not* feel sorry for her. She starts out so thrilled to see him and so excited to go greet him, and is then crushed by what she sees (the Evenstar). At this moment, she really sees that she's too late, that someone else has taken Aragorn's heart, and you can tell how heartbroken she is. She's seeing the person she loves and knowing that he cannot love her back. And instead of throwing a hissy fit about it or bursting into melodramatic tears, she just quietly stands there, and does not go forward. That shows tremendous honor on her part, I think. And somehow only makes you feel worse for her.

4. Any other thoughts/comments?

of Legolas and Aragorn's friendship.. that first picture. They're still, relaxed, and they show their relief with joking... very hobbity ;) This is one of those moments in the film I am quiet for. Legolas' humour is subtle, and Aragorn's reaction priceless. This was a pickup shot that they did to show Legolas returning the Evenstar. In principle photography, they had Aragorn wearing the jewel, which they painted out. I think this shot with Legolas returning it was done after the characters had been fleshed out a bit more.
 
1. I'm a book-firster, and when I saw Aragorn "die" i was a bit surprised, but I knew that they couldn't kill him off. I can also understand why they did it.
2. I like the fact that Aragorn and Legolas have such a good relationship that most of the time they can understand what the other person is thinking or feeling just by looking in their eyes. This scene is a good example of that. They only say two three sentences to each other yet you get the feeling that they understand so much more.
3. I think that when Eowyn sees the Evenstar she remembers that Aragorn is in love with another woman, and that she probably shouldn't run over a hug another woman's hubby.

This is one part of the movie where I definitely understood why the writers made a change. Purely from a movie point of view, I thought it was very well done. I was surprised at the time sitting in the theatre – but in reading the book again after the movie (more than once!), I could definitely see why they felt it was necessary.

2. What, if anything, did this scene show you of the relationship between Aragorn and Legolas?
I enjoyed this reunion very much. Aragorn was clearly “the leader” of the remnant of the Fellowship – I felt that Legolas felt this loss deeply, especially after the death of Boromir. I think the reaction of both Aragorn and Legolas was quite “manly”. Two women would have hugged joyously and said what they really did feel – men I think are more inclined to introduce humour to cover their deeply felt emotions! (Sorry men!)

The writers did a good job with this scene – in essence for Eowyn it was both the answer to a prayer and the sword that pierced her soul! Eowyn was not one of my favourites but I did indeed feel sorry for her – to find that her beloved had survived when she had been contemplating a life without him – and then to see his face as he received the Evenstar. It was the best of times and the worst of times!!

4. Any other thoughts/comments?
To me the emotion shown between Aragorn and Legolas in the movie was more like the emotion shown in the book between Legolas and Gimli. In the books I loved the genuine affection that grew between Legolas and Gimli – I was disappointed how they changed it to a comic effect in the movie. I understood why they felt it necessary but I was still a little disappointed.
 
It's so endearing, and so typical of his character! And yes, Multicapland definitely has its advantages!
 
There's something about this interchange between Legolas and Aragorn that is just so calm, matter of fact.I love that it doesn't have to be all grand and expounding. It just is. It's a bit of just normalcy in a story packed with importance.


And it has it's partner scene at the coronation. from my echo/foreshadowing list:
In TTT, when Aragorn returns from the dead... Legolas gives him back the 'Evenstar' necklace and Aragorn says, 'Hallon le' - 'Thank you'. In FOTR, at the coronation, Aragorn tells Legolas, 'Hallon le' and it may be my imagination, but it seems to me that Legolas - with a look - directs Aragorn's gaze toward the other Elves... and there is the 'Evenstar' in person. My imagination?
