Frodo's ring-induced trance was always one of the creepiest things for me in TTT. I like how it was acted out, too.

2. Why do you think only Gollum was bound?

Because he already escaped the Rangers once. They likely didn't want to take any chances.

3. Does this scene work for you?

Apart from my disapproval with the sudden 180% attitude shift in Faramir (from 'mighty gift' to 'then it's forfeit'), and with Sam shouting about the Ring for all Gondorians to hear, I have always had a problem with the logistics in this scene. If they came from the East and found the Eastern half of the city overrun by orcs, how did they get across the River? The tunnels are only introduced as a revelation later on. How did the company get to the Western bank? Did they sail further upstream or what? Very confusing.

1. What do you think of the contrast between everyone else looking to the sky and Frodo staring creepily ahead? Frodo doesn't have to look around to see the demons! They are right there in his head. which is creepy. Very.

2. Why do you think only Gollum was bound? I think the Rangers of Ithilien get a vibe from Gollum, of murder and malice, that they simply don't get from Hobbits, even if they are a bit unsure of the Hobbits.

3. Does this scene work for you? Well I hadn't considered the logistics as much until now... so there is that difficulty. But purely as a scene in its own right, yes it does. Especially as it sets the stage for Sam to do some needed tale telling; and for Frodo to show how he has changed, and what the Ring let's him see. I love that when Frodo goes *very* creepy and eye-rolling, Faramir has a look of startled horror on his face. Serious business going on, and I like that he takes these Hobbits seriously.

4. Any other comments? Sméagol looks so very pitiful in this scene, so skinny and bedraggled (even more than usual.) One of the times I really felt physical 'pain' for him. Even though I know what's bugging him the most is not being able to tear our Frodo's throat, grab the Ring and run. And I like the extension of the cold 'twilight' coloring we talked about recently.

Unlike the others, it’s not the Nazgul that Frodo fears.


2. Why do you think only Gollum was bound?

The hobbits proved easy to catch. Gollum was rather difficult so they’re taking no chances with him.


3. Does this scene work for you?

Pretty much. I’m struck by the white strip in the background and Sam front and center, presaging the line “And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.”


4. Any other comments?

Very interesting that they’re being held captive by nine men. This means something.

Sméagol looks so very pitiful in this scene, so skinny and bedraggled (even more than usual.) One of the times I really felt physical 'pain' for him.

I began to feel very sorry for Smeagol also, in TTT. Andy Serkis is just amazing. I wonder what it was like to watch him as they filmed the scene where as Smeagol he's curled up in Henneth Annun, crying. Because really when he says, "Why does it cry, Sméagol?" I, for one, always tear up, his body language and that line is so pitiful. Even all geared up in a motion capture suit, it must have been remarkable to watch.

Really Andy is such a gift to the franchise, and I am thrilled at how that early casting simply for voice evolved into what we have now. The latest VLogs for TH give such a great sight of him working with MF, gives one a sense of what that scene in TTT must have been like; because CGI out of the equation he really nailed it in body and voice (like when his long arms sort of curl all around his head and body, like he comforting himself, like a mother would....pitiful, touching and creepy at the same time.)

I could not agree more Loresilme. Those lucky crew, to be witness to it. I know that George Lucas changed a lot of Yoda's portrayal after seeing Gollum and wanting to get that lifelike aspect. Personally I do think Gollum nails it oodles more (while we are on the subject, I think that scene in Henneth Annun when Frodo calls Gollum in from the pool...I can say "OK, that's CGI..." but that face, eyes, the beaded water on his skin - impossible. It just looks so real. Wonderful.
