Sauron and Smaug- buddies?

Hi all,

Could Sauron be portayed as Smaug's master in the movie? Looks like they are increasing Sauron's role.

He might also have a body in The Hobbit, no?
 
Although, one of Gandalfs concerns for offing Smaug was to make sure the necromancer couldn't make use of him. I would be alright with a group of orcs from Dol Guldur going to the lonely mountain in hopes to ally with Smaug, and getting defeated in the process.

Something to play up the THREAT of a Sauron/Smaug alliance would be fine. Having it actually happen would be such a terrible idea. About 10 times worse than Sauron fighting Aragorn at the black gate.
 
Do you expect we see Sauron in physical form? Isn't he voiced by Sherlock?

Will the movie portray the moment when Sauron realises that the Necromancer is Sauron returned? Perhaps Gandy thought it was a renegade blue wizard, up to this point?

In the background material that Peter Jackson mainly draws from when it comes to additions in these films, Sauron is trying to convince Smaug to his service, or intends to do so in the future. I wouldn't be surprised if PJ added a scene where Bilbo eavsdrops a debate between Smaug and an unknown being that turns out to be the Necromancer/Sauron, but I doubt that he would outright reduce Smaug into a mere pawn.

Apparently Benedict Cumberbatch did do some motion capture work for the Necromancer, as well as for Smaug, so we presumably will see some kind of figure for the Necromancer, but it would be hasty to assume for it to be a physical body.
 
Gandalf was worried that Smaug might be used by Sauron when he was in Dol Guldur. If Gandalf was worried, it's fairly likely that this could have happened.

Gloin recounts at the Council of Elrond that an envoy of Sauron offered them one of the three Dwarven rings of power for information. It is likely that he would have offered Smaug the same for his services, had he lived. I doubt Smaug could resist something so powerful as that.

Therefore, I doubt he would be shown as his master, but as an ally at this stage perhaps.
 
I doubt at this time of the Hobbit that proto-Sauron would welcome a Dragon into his affairs, let alone be powerful enough to control a wild Dragon of Smaug's age & size. [;)]

Anyway, I think there won't be more connexion between those two than there is in the appendix

You probably didn't realize, but the original trilogy had many scenes of Andy Serkis talking to Andy Serkis. And I don't mean Gollum vs. Sméagol discussions -- he voiced a great chunk of the orcs in the movies, and the Witch-King, too, if I remember correctly.

Benedict Cumberbatch has a great vocal range, and both of his characters will probably have digitally altered voices. I consider it quite possible that PJ will add a scene where Bilbo will accidentally eavsdrop Smaug getting persuaded and threatened by the Necromancer to emphasize the threat that motivates Gandalf.
