SAST Quiz #16

Tol Eressea
*Ro tiptoes in, headlamp at the ready* Hail and well met, ye quiz takers! Welcome to this week’s Short Attention Span Theatre quiz! Are you ready for another sojourn into dark and secret places? I hope no one’s afraid of the dark, as this week we’re covering Chapter 4, Over Hill and Under Hill. And I do suggest a bit of secrecy; not only are there plenty of goblins about, but there are older and fouler things than goblins down here. Now, you know the routine: this quiz is absolutely CLOSED BOOK. Anyone even suspected of cheating will first be taken to the deepest tunnel and forced to have a staring contest with a blind salamander, and then will be left behind for goblin hors d’oeuvres. Questions worth one point each, bribes happily accepted, and the quiz closes in three days. Fair enough? Okay then – don’t forget to turn on your flashlights and torches!

*Ro settles down in cave waiting for the troop of drenched dwarves*

Pop goes the world! Or maybe it's You go my lad!

[I’ll also accept the last line of either of the other two stanzas.]

4. After the Dwarves and Bilbo are captured by goblins, before whom are they brought?

David Bowie! Nah, it's the Great Goblin King.

5. What are the goblins’ names for Orcrist and Glamdring?

Beater and Biter

that whenever Bilbo gets into real trouble, it's in some dark place! [laugh]

1. When the company takes refuge in the cave from the thunder-battle, what’s the first thing Oin and Gloin want to do?
Get a fire going - while the rest of the Dwarves collect the rain-water. They had to prepare a warm bath for hair-washing. Thorin especially was in need.

2. What does Bilbo dream of, as he sleeps in the cave?
Raindrops on roses, and whiskers on dragons...coming out of a crack in the wall, which was growing bigger and bigger and bigger...

3. Fill in the next line (which is the last line of this stanza) of the goblins’ song:
Clap! Snap! the black crack!
Grip, grab! Pinch, nab!
And down down to Goblin-town
_____ _____ ______ ______ [four words]

"All our sorrows for to drown"...no, that's six words, and goblins can't rhyme.
"Come-a come-a down down down down down, do-do-do-wah-ah"...no, goblins don't have rhythm, either.
"You go, my lad!"...somehow it bothers me that goblins use "lad", I bet that's just Bilbo's translation, and the real word was not fit for hobbit-children's ears!

4. After the Dwarves and Bilbo are captured by goblins, before whom are they brought?
New Jersey governor Chris Christie. Although I understand he's undertaken some weight loss procedures, so may not for long be the size of the Great Goblin.

5. What are the goblins’ names for Orcrist and Glamdring?
Byte-er and Bit-er, destroyers of websites. In those days "hacking" was done literally.
And Biter and Beater, when used on the goblin-programmers.

1. When the company takes refuge in the cave from the thunder-battle, what’s the first thing Oin and Gloin want to do?
Build a fire
Not such a smart thing to do when mountains are battling outside

2. What does Bilbo dream of, as he sleeps in the cave?
The Shire?
I thought all his dreams were about the Shire, but I was wrong last time this question came up.

3. Fill in the next line (which is the last line of this stanza) of the goblins’ song:
Clap! Snap! the black crack!
Grip, grab! Pinch, nab!

Turning Frowns Upside Down?

I only learn Hobbit songs. [cool]

4. After the Dwarves and Bilbo are captured by goblins, before whom are they brought?
Goblin King
and his little scribe [:)]

5. What are the goblins’ names for Orcrist and Glamdring?
Biter & Beater
Also Thorin and Gandalf's wrestling names

When the company takes refuge in the cave from the thunder-battle, what’s the first thing Oin and Gloin want to do?

Build a fire - using bits of Rivendell furniture, according to the movie.

What does Bilbo dream of, as he sleeps in the cave?

Thorin’s blue eyes...errr, sorry, that’s me. Ummmm, he dreams the back of the cave opens and the ponies disappear?

3. Fill in the next line (which is the last line of this stanza) of the goblins’ song:
Clap! Snap! the black crack!
Grip, grab! Pinch, nab!
And down down to Goblin-town
_____ _____ ______ ______ [four words]

Ho ho my lad
You go my lad.

After the Dwarves and Bilbo are captured by goblins, before whom are they brought?

Dame Edna. Wait, no, The Great Goblin.

What are the goblins’ names for Orcrist and Glamdring?

Fred and Ethel? Tom and Jerry? Laurel and Hardy? Biter and Beater?

Ewww, goblins... I don't like those. Have to focus on something nice to get through this. Now, what would that be? [tongue]

1. Oin and Gloin, those short-stack pyromaniacs, want to start a fire. They say it's to dry themselves and possibly for cooking, but we all know that it's really just because it illuminates Thorin's flowing locks so nicely. (There, no surprise, I'm back with the hair thing... might as well continue it now for the last few quizzes.)

2. Now, I am certain Bilbo would have liked to dream of something pretty (like Thorin's hair) or even a dream of bacon and eggs and toast would have been better than the ugly dreams that he had of cracks in the back wall of the cave opening and the floor giving way underneath where they were sleeping and falling down through the floor.

3. The four words might, of course, be "with Thorin's shiny hair", but Goblins have little appreciation for the finer things in life, so the text ran more along the lines of of "you go, my lad".

4. They are brought before the Great Goblin, who was quite a nasty fellow. Horrible singing voice, too, and no pretty, shiny, soft hair like Thorin, but probably no hair at all.

5. They called Orcrist the Biter and Glamdring the Beater. Now, little known fact of the day - the Goblins once upon a time had had some famous swords, too (well, reasonably famous among Goblins - these were not of Elvish make, after all), which they called Beard-cutter and Hair-cutter respectively, which they used to great effect against the Dwarves of Durin's line, who, like Thorin, were quite famous for they hair and also their beards. But then the custom of naming swords caught on with the Goblins and everyone wanted to name their sword. Being rather unimaginative creatures, however, they all picked either Beard-cutter or Hair-cutter as the name of their sword, so soon everyone completely forgot which had been the original famous swords. And the originals were lost at some point in any case.

shhh... put on your quiet slippers and don't drop your hobbit! THANKS RO :D

1. When the company takes refuge in the cave from the thunder-battle, what’s the first thing Oin and Gloin want to do?
Fire! They love making campfires.

2. What does Bilbo dream of, as he sleeps in the cave?
That the back is opening up.

3. Fill in the next line (which is the last line of this stanza) of the goblins’ song:
Clap! Snap! the black crack!
Grip, grab! Pinch, nab!
And down down to Goblin-town
__becoming___ __our___ ___midnight___ __snack!____ [four words] ;P

[I’ll also accept the last line of either of the other two stanzas.]

4. After the Dwarves and Bilbo are captured by goblins, before whom are they brought?
The Great Goblin

5. What are the goblins’ names for Orcrist and Glamdring?
Biter and Beater

1. When the company takes refuge in the cave from the thunder-battle, what’s the first thing Oin and Gloin want to do?
Start a fire. Drenched dwarves don't like to stay that way, more's the pity.

2. What does Bilbo dream of, as he sleeps in the cave?
*cough* Surely it was only bacon and eggs, and nothing whatsoever to do with drenched dwarves.

3. Fill in the next line (which is the last line of this stanza) of the goblins’ song:
Clap! Snap! the black crack!
Grip, grab! Pinch, nab!
And down down to Goblin-town
_____ _____ ______ ______ [four words]
"Thorin's mine, Bombur's yours"?
"Hot dwarves to me!"?
"I prefer them drenched"?
"Look! Drenched majestic hair!"?

(Am I getting close?)
"They're drenched; ponies too!"
"Ponies for dinner, boys!" (There's a fearful amount of collateral damage to ponies in this book. [unsure])

4. After the Dwarves and Bilbo are captured by goblins, before whom are they brought?
The Great Goblin (the goblin king). The dwarves are probably no longer drenched by this point.

5. What are the goblins’ names for Orcrist and Glamdring?
Biter (Ocrist) and Beater (Glamdring). They still work even when drenched. [evil]

Well, it's not a troop, O Honored Quizmistress, but... here you are. I hope this improves my score.

1. When the company takes refuge in the cave from the thunder-battle, what’s the first thing Oin and Gloin want to do?
What most older gents want to do after a journey- build a fire of course. Although this was in fact Thorin's order so he could power his hairdryer
2. What does Bilbo dream of, as he sleeps in the cave?
Well, I know what I'd be dreaming of, but I wouldn't expect the same to be true of Bilbo so-hmmm.... Maybe that rather nice Elven flautist in Rivendell? In fact, he is dreaming of a crack (why are there so many "cracks" in Tolkien?) opening up in the back of the cave. This in fact turns out to be one of those waking dream thingies- oh dear!
3. Fill in the next line (which is the last line of this stanza) of the goblins’ song:
Clap! Snap! the black crack!
Grip, grab! Pinch, nab!
And down down to Goblin-town
_____ _____ ______ ______ [four words]

[I’ll also accept the last line of either of the other two stanzas.] ? Thorin is a clown, ? Thorin wears a frown? Radagast's hat is brown Actually it may be something like "We'll go my lads" but don't know really

4. After the Dwarves and Bilbo are captured by goblins, before whom are they brought? Jabba the Hutt's cousin, the Great Goblin. If it weren't for the arrival of Gandalf, the GG may have taken a leaf out of his delightful cousin's book and had certain of the dwarves chained to his throne in gold bikins, fat suits and all (though Thorin is prettier than Princess Leia IMO)

5. What are the goblins’ names for Orcrist and Glamdring?
Probably not repeatable in the Westron, so I'll go for Biter and Beater

1. When the company takes refuge in the cave from the thunder-battle, what’s the first thing Oin and Gloin want to do?

2. What does Bilbo dream of, as he sleeps in the cave?
He dreams of Jeannie, with the light brown hair -- wait, wrong one. He dreams that the floor cracks and they all fall through it.

3. Fill in the next line (which is the last line of this stanza) of the goblins’ song:
Clap! Snap! the black crack!
Grip, grab! Pinch, nab!
And down down to Goblin-town
_____ _____ ______ ______ [four words]

"To face our king of flab"

Sorry, I tend to glaze over the poems and songs and have no clue.

4. After the Dwarves and Bilbo are captured by goblins, before whom are they brought?
The aforementioned king of flab -- the Great Goblin

5. What are the goblins’ names for Orcrist and Glamdring?
Beater and Biter, well that's better than Bill and Bob.

Thinking about this chapter in the book may help me block out the memories of the Misty Mountains turning into Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots. (Sorry, but I really didn't like that bit.)

1. Update their Facebook pages. Then build a fire.

2. The cave opening up. (Which it then did, and had Bilbo not stopped to Instagram a photo of this, he might have escaped capture.)

3. Do the Goblin Shake. (I really don't know that one. "Ya-Hey, Ya Harry Hey, Ya Hoy" is too long. And let me take this opportunity to register my indignation that the elves get labelled silly for the "tra la lally" bit, but no one really takes issue with the orcs doing it. I'm just sayin')

4. The Great Goblin (follow him on Twitter @ponysryummy)

5. Beater (Glamdring) and Biter (Orcrist)

1. Get a fire going.

2. That the back of the cave opens.

3. Clap! Snap! the black crack!
Grip, grab! Pinch, nab!
And down down to Goblin-town
Thorin[size 3], Thorin, Thorin, Thorin! [crazy]

[size 3][size 3]Really, I have not the slightest idea about the last (or any other) line of any of these stanzas. Can we now go back to the "Which dwarf ...?" questions?

[size 3]4. His [size 3]Malevolence, the Goblin King

[size 3]5. Biter and Beater

[size 3]Ok, now I'm off to [size 3]learn the lyrics for the next session of the Goblin Ch[size 3]oir ...

Thanks Ro for this week's fun! [angelic]

"Tandem Cousins"

Oin and Gloin, (not cousins, but brothers)
Start tending a fire to warm all the others.

Bilbo dreams ill as he lies by the fire,
of a crack in the wall, that is opening wider.

Ho ho my lads! Cry all the Goblins in rhyme -
Eww! Brothers and cousins all at the same time!

Before the Great Goblin, he stamps and he yells!
(and maybe a cousin..... of dear Orson Welles?)

Biter and Beater, the blades that are kin
Gandalf, with Beater, does the Goblin king in!

And LOOK! I found Thorin's evil (or maybe just misunderstood...?) Cousin!
