On Wednesday this week, I hadn't been feeling great, so I stayed home form work that morning, and the neighbor stopped by (as she does often), and asked if I didn't have work that day. I replied that I did, but I just wasn't feeling too great, so I was staying home. It wasn't exactly like I was sick, but you know that feeling of just being completely run-down? It was more like that. But, I wasn't really in the mood to explain that to the neighbor (a very sweet old lady), so I just said I was feeling a little nauseous, and she nodded and left.
Well, about fifteen minutes later, she came back, and brought a large bag with her and began pulling out pepto-bismol, soup, crackers, sprite, seven up (in case I didn't like sprite), and some jell-o for dessert. I just got this huge smile on my face, and I ended up going into work that afternoon. I'm going to paint her a card this weekend to say thank you. I was very touched by her thoughtfulness.
That got me thinking about TORn, and the impact it has on its regulars. I've been kind of on the boards sporadically the past year or so, but every single time I come here, it is entirely rewarding. The people here are so friendly-- not just in terms of other sites/forums, but in terms of RL, too. The reason my neighbor made me think of this place is that one of the first things I thought afterwards was, I'll bet the sibs on TORn would appreciate this story.
Everybody has some sort of difficulty that they are going through at this very moment, and everyone handles their difficulties differently, but (and I know this sounds cliche) sometimes the absolute best thing you can get in those times is a smile on your face, and someone who cares enough to put it there for you, even if that person is almost a stranger. The people who carry out these Random Acts of Kindness don't have to be of a specific relation to you; they just have to have an understanding of the fact that you are related because you're human. Because you are human, they understand you enough to know what you need, and then they give it to you, simply because they want to make things better.
Those people are the kind of people I see here, and the kind of person I saw on Wednesday. It really can make an impact, and a bigger one than you'd sometimes expect. Just giving someone a smile that you wouldn't normally feel like giving can make a difference.
