Peter Jackson as Dain

It's possible.

No casting announcement yet. Likely Thorin will get the "lead dwarf" treatment at the Battle of Five Armies. The role may only last for a few seconds, as the Iron Hill dwarves arrive at the site of the battle.

I'm not a proponent of this, but it's not out of the question.

Seriously though (gosh I say that a lot) your theory does not lack merit. It would be a good cameo opportunity for JRD or GDT as well. (Maybe even Morgan Freeman. I heard he is in it but haven't seen him in any of the vlogs or pics so far.)

it HAS to be Ghan-Buri-Ghan. He could live in Mirkwood and help Gandalf in his investigation of Dol Guldur.

Definitely has to be PJ...nude, with bright blue and yellow flowers peaking out from various furry patches, and he skips and frolics through the eaves of the forest.

Let that image sink in for a while! [tongue][tongue]

I would think Dain will be what I call an extended cameo. i.e. A small part but with lines that requires an actor, Dain does, after all, have great dramatic significance and PJ, for all his talents, isn't an actor. Dain will be cast with a trained actor just like the other principal roles.

I don't think Jackson would be up to having a role with lines. I'm sure Dain will be announced soon and rumor has it Brian Blessed has fallen off the face of the earth which means he might be in NZ filming the part of Dain. From all I have seen out of him he would be pretty good for a role like Dain loud and yells alot nothing that will win him an Oscar I'm sure but I would rather see him or JRD, or Brian cox was even mentioned as a rumor once he would be a AWSOME Dain

If they don't cast a bigger name like Brian Blessed then it would most likely go to a New Zealand character actor.

I think Brian Cox would make an incredible Dain, something about him has a dwarven quality to it and he's a pretty good actor but everywhere that has reputable info is saying Brian Blessed

About "reputable info" and yet as far as I can see, the only indication that Blessed might play Dain comes from a 2010 interview, where Blessed said he spoke with Guillermo and auditioned for the part of "Oakenshield." Apart from that, I have seen nothing to suggest he has landed this particular part.

Am I missing something?

I don't remember where I heard it, but I think that he was GDT's choice, but after he left, I don't think Blessed ever heard back from the production, and PJ casted Armitage. After Thorin was cast, Blessed was the new hopeful for every other dwarf role.

I imagine he will be too busy with his own projects, and PJ is no actor so I don't see him doing it either. they may end up with cameos as dwarfs in the battle of the 5 armies but I don't see them taking a role of this importance. JRD has been on PJ to get involved but I honestly think they would find something a bit more under dressed, if you will, because of his allergic reaction to the prosthetic glue while he was playing Gimli. By under dressed I mean in a Mo-cap suit possibly as one of the Trolls, or all three. But to see him as a dwarf people are just going to see Gimli which although they are cousins Dain is still not Gimli. I think it should be a accomplished actor, known or unknown. they might just be leaving some spoilers out there for us to discover in the theater while we watch the films, or as Cumberbatch says they are filming film one right now and when they get to filming the second one we might hear a few more cast members, but I can't see the director(s) either of them taking the role of Dain

Dain, isn't he just someone that is seen during the battle for a few seconds and maybe a little speech with thorin or something. Better would be someone that looks the role already, go out and grab the first carpenter or miner you can find.

Don't understand why everyone is calling him a major role... He comes in at the very end of the book and all he does is fighting...
I don't remember him having any lines in the book...

though i think he will have at least a few lines before the battle starts, even if they're not literally in the book i think they will exchange a few words.
and i think they will have a real actor for him. since he is the leader of the dwarves in the battle(besides thorin and his dwarves) he will get quite an amount of screen time during the battle and i don't think you can let PJ do that...
