So what are some of your personal goals in life or a certain thing you want to do before "it all turns to silver glass"? What are some material things you want like a sweet car, a fighter jet or something like that?
 
Well all I asked for on the occaission of the New Year was to be a blessing to those around me. Probably messed that up already.
 
I love ya. I would love to have you come over with the whole family and stay with us in our new log home creation (see below).

I definitely want to have a period of time where I live alone and I'm separated from people I know, with a job, and a home all to myself. It sounds kind of aloof and distant, but I have really wanted that for a while. Not forever, just for a little while. Another country would be really fun! I pick up languages quickly, and I can get by in most Romance languages already (esp. French and Portugese), and I wouldn't require a particularly well-paying job. Just one where I could get by.

It sounds crazy and implausible, but this thread wasn't about likely wants and goals! Just personal ones that you dream about sometimes. [:)]
 
in NZ called the OE - overseas experience. Young adults just out of tertiary education nip off overseas for two, three, four years to work and travel, experiencing other cultures and establishing their own sense of identity. Not that I did that, but an awful lot do.

Your dream sounds very much along the same lines, and I think it's a great idea.
 
who have found jobs in other countries for six months or a year. Of course, it helps to be a professor or doctor or know another language, but it isn't really necessary.

Finding a job that would allow you to rent a single family home might be harder, but if you are willing to settle for a studio apartment, I think you should be able to do it.

Of course, you could also join the Peace Corps or the Army, but I imagine that's not what you had in mind.

I would like to own my own house. Home ownership is often an illusion. Most people rent their homes from a bank.

I have many travel plans put on hold while I raise a family. I want to see Luxor in Egypt, Xian in China, the Noto Peninsula in Japan, Western Somoa, St. John in the Virgin Islands, Botswana in Africa, and (for a second time) the island of Bali in Indonesia. Maybe when the kids are older we can go as a family. Right now it seems like too much effort and expense.
 
You are still in effect renting it from your municipality, since if you don't continue to pay the property tax, they can take it away from you. [:(]
 
The diagonal bookcases seem to mark of age and i envision them being Tolkien's or Lewis's creation. The ceiling bookcases are a really good and simple solution. I did something similar in our little camp kitchen to put the myriad items that we use. But all those shapes are curious. The one designed as an extended pull-apart took some thought i'd say. That was fun Laerasea.
 
I had a bucket list when I was 30 that I'm happy to say I have mostly fulfilled as I near 60 (some examples: build a house from the ground up, travel in Europe, sing with a rock band, climb mountains, live in the mountains & ski for an entire winter). So now I have a new list:

Finish my PhD
Turn my dissertation into a book that gets published and sells well
Teach part-time and get on the speaker/workshop circuit
Write more books

I've been through times in my life where I've had a lot and times where I had nearly nothing, and find that material stuff isn't that big a deal to me. I would like to be in a situation where I could have dogs again fairly soon.

And I really would like to experience a real solid love sometime before I die. That's eluded me so far, unless you count my 14-year relationship with a German shepherd.
 
i think that what i have come to value after 60+ years is that the simple quiet life with the simple pleasures are where life is to be found, especially when surrounded with the natural world in all its moods and mysteries. Wonder and awe should grow with life and not diminish. Bilbo had it right all along i think. Quiet and peace.

But along with that is family and sharing life. Love ought to be our axis mundi, wherever the roots are set down.

And don't forget about ginger tea[laugh].
 
looks fantastic. I could definitely arrange mine in that way, but I don't know if I would be able to handle having my books organised by colour, rather than by subject.
