Celebrating Bilbo and Frodo's Birthday, here's a selection of trivia that has one choice that doesn't fit. Answers will be posted later today. Thanks for playing! :D

6. n/a; they share all of the above, surely. Unless you're saying that they didn't have friends in common? They were, in fact, cousins.

9. n/a. They were all of the above, though we can only infer that Bilbo had stayed at the Prancing Pony (probably at least two or three times).
10. a. Bilbo was only referred to as "Mad Baggins" after his adventure.

Am I being pedantic? Probably yes, so what?

#2: Frodo spent his 51st birthday in Rivendell, but "The Tale of Years" informs us that he and his companions arrived the day before; I should have recalled that it was Bilbo who handed out the presents!

Correct answer: b and d.

#7: Talk about a trick question! So "thief" because of Gollum's accusations? I don't think Frodo would self-identity as a thief.

Correct answer: c, on technicalities.

#9: We are not told in the text that Bilbo ever stayed at the Prancing Pony, but I can name at least four times when he would have done so: 1) 2941, with Thorin & Company (confirmed in Tolkien's uncompleted 1960 revision of The Hobbit; 2) 2942, with Gandalf, returning to Hobbiton; 3) 3018, probably accompanied by the dwarves who left Bag End with him; and 4) 3012, en route to the Grey Havens.

Correct answer: None of the above.
 
Yeah... as I was putting this together, I felt like more than a few of these could have had more than one choice. *sigh* But I did have some final answers I'm going with.

The only one you chose different was #2 a. Taking a hike through the Shire. I've got d. Handing out gifts. Frodo did the gift-giving the day after Bilbo's Big Birthday Party; but he left for Crickhollow the evening of his birthday. And you were so right about #6.... but you chose what I did! :D

Re: #2 (handing out presents) and #9 (staying at Prancing Pony) I'm afraid I was sticking to the LotR and Hobbit books that I've (blindly) read through the years and not revisions or extensions of the books. I was looking for referrals in the storyline(s). So I have Frodo handing out Bilbo's tagged mathoms the day after the Party. There wasn't a mention of Bilbo actually staying at The Pony that I could find.

And #7 really was a tricksy one. There's a phrase Gollum says during his "debate" with Smeagol that Sam was overhearing in The Two Towers: Passage of the Marshes:

'Then take it,' said the other, 'and let's hold it ourselfs! Then we shall be master, gollum! Make the other hobbit, the nasty suspicious hobbit, make him crawl, yes, gollum!'
'But not the nice hobbit?'
'Oh no, not if it doesn't please us. Still he's a Baggins, my precious, yes, a Baggins. A Baggins stole it. He found it and he said nothing, nothing. We hates Bagginses.'
'No, not this Baggins.'
'Yes, every Baggins. All peoples that keep the Precious. We must have it!'

There's also Frodo stealing Farmer Maggot's mushrooms that he felt so much turmoil about and that Maggot also remembered... though neither one actually said the word "thief".

Pippin introduced the other two to the farmer. 'Mr. Frodo Baggins,' he said. 'You may not remember him, but he used to live at Brandy Hall.' At the name Baggins the farmer started, and gave Frodo a sharp glance. For a moment Frodo thought that the memory of stolen mushrooms had been aroused, and that the dogs would be told to see him off. But Farmer Maggot took him by the arm.
