In the last few days, I've seen an image of Ori somewhere on the net, possibly taken from EE appendices footage or from one of the new DOS guides, which is rather intriguing. Maddeningly, I can't find it again, but can describe the main features. It shows filming in progress (there's a camera in shot, pointing at Ori). He has a tall glass vessel in his hand and is pouring something into a succession of small roundish containers (not normal cups or mugs). The background wall is green and marbled, the glass vessel is very sturdy, and octagonal or hexagonal in section - Dwarvish style rather than Elvish. So I think he's in Erebor. He doesn't look in the least as though he's partying, so I don't think he's pouring wine. In fact what came to mind was the scene in TT with Saruman and Wormtongue "How can fire undo stone?" So there may be explosions ahead...
 
that DoS will include a scene of Thorin's company combating Smaug with "artillery" that they probably find in the Erebor armory...so much for Saruman's explosive being a "new" thing.
 
I didn't think this up myself, but a number of lines of evidence suggest the dwarves will be constructing some sort of trap for Smaug. Maybe the idea is for Bilbo to steal part of the treasure (the Arkenstone, apparently) to send him into a rage, and then use explosives to bring the front gate down on him when he comes storming out? That would explain the shot of Thorin diving out through the gate followed by a burst of fire, anyway.
 
Because I read so much about each dwarves' traits being explored in the WETA books, so if Ori is serving up at an apothecary or alchemist
(which was described in WETA books) will really enjoy that detail.

And will be on lookout for image - maddening how these things come and go online......
 
We already know that fireworks are used in Middle-earth, so if this "artillery" turns out to be nothing more than small little exploding balls, then I think we're ok.

If they turn out to be giant bombs, then not only would Jackson be contradicting the books, he'd be contradicting his own films. It is made pretty clear in the Two Towers that Saruman's explosive was an as-yet-unseen thing.
 
Since the Dwarves are used
to dealing with Minerals
of ALL kinds, then this could
be how they Blasted their way
into the Rocks in the First place...
in any Mountains..

When the Dwarves are captured by the Goblins it is said something along the lines of 'one of the Goblins many passions is explosives'. So Saruman's "new" thing wasn't considered that "new" even by Tolkien himself.

Although I can predict my chemistry geekiness will be going into overdrive to try to figure out exactly what chemicals Ori is using to set off an explosion... [laugh] This scene might should come with a disclaimer: "Please do not try this at home." Because some people (*raises guilty hand*) will probably consider it...
 
that the Dwarves are a rather secretive culture. If they had developed explosives for their mining, they might very well not have shared this knowledge with other races.

Apparently Wormtongue never saw Gandalf's Fireworks..
 
I think you may be on to something regarding the Dwarves' passion for mining. Although Tolkien never explicitly links the Dwarves to any explosives as far as I'm aware.

So I'm fine with some limited use of explosives, I just hope they don't over-do it. I think it might look too modern if the explosions are too big.
 
with the shock of Saruman's explosives (his devices?) at Helm's Deep, one of my favorite moments in all the movies, right from the moment i saw it in the theater-- such a great shot.
 
said it all - old warrior though he was, he was utterly at a loss; this was clearly something right outside his experience.
 
The awe was almost palpable in his expression. That whole scene fit together remarkably well cutting between emotional close-ups, wide-shots of miniatures populated by cgi, and gritty fight sequences.
 
I would also like for Saruman to be the first one to use explosives in the films, but all signs point to the Dwarves using some form of explosive on Smaug. So I just hope the explosions are small and not in the same league as the explosion at Helm's Deep.
 
... while simultaneously Smaug thinks he's roasted all the dwarves, and so the great dragon shrugs off the debris in a rage and flies to wreak revenge upon the Laketowners who sent the dwarves. Just as the dwarves think it's all over, they look south and see fire upon the lake.

I haven't seen the shot of Ori, but could he be pouring a glass of wine, for the last time, as Sheeran's song says? Some sort of final toast, made with a bottle of wine filched from the elves, before their very likely end?
